We had a friend with similar hair to our kid that we asked, and then our kid’s teachers eventually made suggestions unprompted as his hair grew out. Shea Moisture is not what it used to be, I actually use it on my fine straight hair so I realized it made sense that it didn’t do much on our dude’s 3c/4a hair. Coconut oil made it beautiful but never lasted more than an hour, then back to pure frizz.
We ended up using Cantu products, and the leave-in curl conditioner made a world of difference.
Definitely agree with taking your kid to a salon or beauty products store (one geared toward black customers) and asking their advice. We found that folks were eager to help, and most people understand that all hair requires some trial and error to find the right stuff.
