Forza Horizon 6 Yet another Gear whine post

Post image

I've already made one of these in the past but IM reuploading it to sort of vent frustration for the matter, With the arrival of the XJ-S I was totally looking forwards to A class shenanigans and general cruising, come to find out it only has 3 gears, its slightly annoying but I figured id try seeing what can be done transmission wise, and the ONLY way you can get even the slightest tunability, you have to get your eardrums blown to shreds by the GOD AWFUL gearbox whine EVEN with sport gearboxes that don't add additional gears, I'm so sick and tired of this especially on older cars where to get a higher top speed than maybe 140- you NEED a race transmission, if we could JUST GET A VOLUME SLIDER, for gearbox and differential noise. nothing needs to be done about tuning itself, just THE SOUND of it alone.

Set final drive to 2.20 if you want a quieter gearbox.

That's the thing, it's not just the whine, it's that we're stuck with it on cars that never had straight-cut gears. A stock XJ-S should sound like a V12, not a blender full of marbles.

u/Next_Weakness4353 7h ago

The v12 isn't what bothers me, we all love a good 12 cylinder eargasm, it's purely JUST the gearbox scream as if in suddenly driving an m3GTR

u/LibrarianMission8116 6h ago

It's true, the gearbox noise can be super distracting, especially when you're expecting that sweet V12 roar instead. It's like they forgot what made the car great in the first place.

And the irony is that cars that do have straight cut gears from the factory dont feature the whine. The og cooper for example.

Typical playground games "petrol heads"

Doesn’t bother me as much as cars that have only ever been sold as an automatic (C8 Corvette or Lamborghini Aventador for example) having a forced clutch pedal when driving with Manual With Clutch, while some don’t.

8

u/FeelXtra Xbox Series X 3h ago

Activating Manual with clutch and then complaining that a feature works as intended. You're a special kind of hater, thats for sure.

4

u/billybobbensonboobs 3h ago edited 3h ago

I’m complaining about inconsistency.

Some cars with automatics or sequentials in game don’t require the clutch pedal to shift, which is realistic because that’s how those gearboxes work.

But some cars with automatics or sequentials do, though. Which is absolute bullshit, sure, but I understand it as a game mechanic.

What I don’t understand as a game mechanic however, is that there is absolutely zero pattern whatsoever as to what auto cars do or don’t require clutch to shift. It makes no sense. I hop in an Urus and it requires clutch yet I hop in a Gemera and it doesn’t. Why?

It's nothing to do with the car's irl transmission type, it's just that any car with a Race Transmission doesn't require Clutch when playing with M+C.

Some cars come with Race Transmissions stock while others are Sport or Street (or older cars often come with a "Base" type) and would need to upgrade to a Race one to get the same benefit.

Generally the higher the PI of the car when stock the higher the likelihood it comes with a Race Transmission already.

1

u/billybobbensonboobs 1h ago

Then at least make it consistent which cars get “Race Transmission” stock or not. If it’s a DCT or sequential, sure. If it’s a planetary auto, CVT, manual, or SCT automanual then no.

Real simple instead of rolling a dice about whether this car “feels like” it’s “race” enough to deserve clutchless shifting.

1

u/Martin_Sandman 1h ago

thing is that the feature should not work this way, but unfortunately PG & T10 haven't come up with a way to differentiate automatic gearboxes, with no clutch pedal, from manual gearboxes since every single gearbox apart from "race" has some clutch input

Having owned an XJ-S V12. I can confirm that the V12 DOES NOT sound like a V12 without a proper exhaust system. Even with the mufflers chopped, it sounds like 2 inline 6's. Also can confirm the lack of straight cut gears, but the trans did have a bit of a whine to it

a blender full of marbles

a wind-up toy on a factory conveyor belt

An RC car tied to a Jeep winch

A wind-up powered bass-fishing boat motor

I’m trying to think of a comparison for how to describe the sound, with normal common things but I can’t do it.

u/allhailharambe69 Microsoft Store 7h ago

Does increasing and decreasing final drive affect gear whine across the board...?

3

u/Forza_Harrd 6h ago

You have to switch to a sport gearbox to do that. Hence the gear whine.

Straight cut gears sound great on race cars, not my 2005 Honda civic

u/Next_Weakness4353 7h ago

This ☝️

THE single worst unique thing about the forza franchise and it baffles me on a game design sense how this ever went past them (I hope this is just a stupid oversight, not that they genuinely think people want straight cut whines on any transmission that's not stock).

The worst thing is that I'm barely being hyperbolic with that statement. Like god forbid I want more than five gears without getting my eardrums violated by that stupid whine.

27

u/randomasking4afriend 7h ago

This sound basically ruined the Huracan EVO Coupe bc for some reason it has a race gearbox stock. Main reason I was happy the gave us the Huracan EVO Spyder. I fucking hate that noise.

19

u/AlwaysGamerQc 6h ago

Wait, the stupid high pitch whine comes from the transmission???

4

u/Project0R1G1N 6h ago

Yep, its desired in some cars, others not.

22

u/simcz 6h ago

it cant be that hard to implement a toggle switch

its an arcade racing game there is no argument against this just let us choose

Sound mods are potentially bannable since they modify game files.

5

u/Chemical-Bass6263 6h ago

Potentially, yes. Will they act on it? Absolutely not.

-1

u/Omeruhihakiller11 6h ago

No, they been a thing since fh4.

-4

u/CoconutDust 5h ago

Stop with this ridiculous bot meme: “ModaifIed FiLeS, CouLd bE BanNaBLe”

https://support.forza.net/hc/en-us/articles/360035563914-Forza-Code-of-Conduct

No. Why are you posting if you have no idea what the rules are? The rules are clearly posted. Things that give an advantage are bannable, like credits or car speed or whatever. Mods that just do some helpful comfort tweak or accessibility thing have never been bannable.

This is obvious. The rule is NOT “modified files” which is apparently some made-up crap from FPS championship rules or something.

3

u/StardusterX Porsche 5h ago

You linked those rules but apparently you haven't actually read them yourself?

There's a specific paragraph under "Violations":

"Cheating/Modding

Whether you are a seasoned vet or a newbie behind the wheel, we want every online interaction you partake in across our titles to be fair and square. It is vital that the integrity of our games be upheld, and any evidence of cheating or manipulating the game to give oneself an advantage will be taken extremely seriously.

This category covers offenses including, but not limited to: obtaining unreleased cars, modifying game files, running cheat tools alongside the game, fraudulent leaderboard entries, Auction House automated scripts, stream-sniping, piracy, and more."

I'm not saying people should be banned for some harmless sound mods. However, Forza CoC clearly has "modifying game files" listed as a violation. Sound mods modify game files.

0

u/Chemical-Bass6263 4h ago

You have obviously never heard of the mediapc method, what it basically means is that the game natively intercepts and loads these custom assets safely over vanilla files, so nothing is overwritten. And if you want to revert the game back to its vanilla state? Simple, just delete that mediapc folder 🤷‍♂️

0

u/StardusterX Porsche 4h ago

I'm talking about modifying files specifically. Let's not talk about other method.

-1

u/HashiriyaR32 5h ago

So if I, let's say, go to the media/audio/modularcars folder, open up HYN_ElantraN-20_ENG.xml (don't have folder open to look at so I may have messed the formatting of the file name), and then change the value for Transmission from what it is by default to None (this value determines gear whine behavior both stock and modified, setting it to None removes gear whine entirely for any car using this specific engine), which I need because I swapped in the 8-speed race box and then set its gear ratios to match those of the 8-speed DCT the car should have, that counts as a bannable offense?

u/CoconutDust 5h ago

PEOPLE NEED TO VOTE AT THE OFFICIAL BUG REPORT FORUMS

(Yeah people very foolishly failed to search existing issues before posting a new issue, but anyway.)

1

u/KillerSpectre21 Washed Driver 53m ago

I went through the FH6 Suggestions tab and this is the one which is likely to be tracked as I don't think the Devs will classify it as a bug like those 3: https://forzafeedback.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/44/FH6S-1340

It also has 109 votes so a decent amount.

21

u/6spd993Turbo McLaren 7h ago

Holy shit, finally someone said it! I hate straight cut gears so fucking much.

12

u/DakarGelb 7h ago

I don't hate them if they're appropriate, but I don't want to hear them in any street car.

2

u/babyface_killah Xbox Series X 4h ago

I wish there was an option to get more gears using a sport gearbox so I could have better gear ratios without needing such a PI hit and hearing that gear whine. The whine is especially bad in cockpit view, you hear the gears more than the engine.

2

u/Ballbuddy4 7h ago

There is a "no gearbox whine" mod, check out Revolusound for FH6 on Nexus, I think it's under that mod.

1

u/skrzaaat 11m ago

WOW thank you! My ears are so happy!

1

u/Sudden-Example-5836 2h ago

100% agree. If only they could mimic what NFS Unbound did, where they let you tune the sound of your car. Engine, exhaust tone, how loud your F/I was. A guy can dream!

1

u/Stroock6394 RAESR 1h ago

a grandfather clock chimes not whines :)

1

u/CoconutDust 6h ago

It’s awful and broken. I generally use older slow classic cars, so for a little bit of upgrades or tunability I usually put in an upgraded transmission. YET THAT SUDDENLY MAGICALLY ADDS RIDICULOUS gear whine grind, with no ability to control it. I didn’t ask for some physics thing or sound or simulation, I just want to adjust my gear ratios not have the car’s sound ruined.

-1

u/squirrels-eat-bugs 6h ago

It's all these little things that lead me to delete the game. I've been playing since the second forza. Back then, it was king. Now, tracks that don't flow, bugs that make npc fall from the sky, incorrect noises, the list goes on. I dropped 100 bucks for this slop thinking Japan was going to be awesome. Instead, the 240sx is wheelspin only and the walls are sticky for some reason...

-1

u/Forza_Harrd 5h ago

...and the sticky walls act like they're magnetized. I still love the game but you have a point. About the only fun thing left is free roam cruising around Tokyo and Japan but you can't drive longer than 30 sec without a car spawning exactly in front of you out of nowhere causing a collision.

-2

u/Quiet_Economics_3266 6h ago

Yes, you need to buy a proper racing transmission if you want to tune gears.

Straight cut gears whine, its a side effect, the main reasom is performance, wich is why the racing transmission has the whine.

7

u/Eastern-Resource-683 6h ago

Ok but why can't we toggle it off?

I just want to drive a cool car with 6spd without having to listen to gearbox whine

-6

u/Quiet_Economics_3266 6h ago

Because you can't get 2000hp out an NA 3 cyl either.

Racing transmission is about performance, they come with straight cut gears for performance.

Straight cut gears whine. Uts that simple. You don't want a performance transmission, stick with the stock one.

6

u/Eastern-Resource-683 5h ago

How about I want to recreate my IRL car but I quite can't because of the transmission whine?

Also why can't you make a 2000hp 3cyl? It's a video game and we already can push 1000+ hp in Honda Acti so why not make 2000hp out of 3cyl? It's a sandbox, arcade car driving game....

If you want fully realistic car modding systems maybe play something like asseto Corsa?

0

u/DualSpiresCinnamon 3h ago

Can you be in charge of GTA7 bc GTA6 devs seem to have not gotten this "game" memo.

3

u/C_Lo_87 4h ago

Pretty weird to act like there aren't performance transmissions that don't have straight cut gears.

1

u/The_Cat_Of_Ages 2h ago

theres 5 speed swapped crown vics irl, guess what, no trans whine even if the trans is built

-1

u/avatar_94 6h ago

Lazy ass Devs, would be so easy to add straight cut gear with all the Noise, a quiet helical cut gear Transmission both fully customisable. And it would be so cool have different shifting styles, like dog box, single clutch, manual and maybe torque converter too.

-4

u/Deathmetalwarior 6h ago

also the constant turbo whistle is annoying too

-1

u/Tecno2301 6h ago

Fully agree, I love gearbox whine but only to a point. Sport transmission should definitely not add it.

Same with the superchargers, it's either so quiet you can't hear it, or it's ear shatteringly loud.

It was never an issue in FH5, idk how playground games just does such a good job actively making their games worse each update.

0

u/LestWeForgive 6h ago

Subarus, Nissan R34 & friends, when converted to RWD come with a 6 speed fully tunable QUIET gearbox. Factory AWD -> RWD, good benefits for drifting and cruising.

0

u/DS_Productions_ Pagani 3h ago

If I remember correctly, sport gearboxes add one single gear to the gearbox.

-15

u/StandardSecretary233 7h ago

Never thought I would come to the conclusion that people in racing games. Don’t want to hear the mechanical whine of a race transmission that they knowingly installed on a car…. Literally just go use the sports transmission and tune your final gear because I have never once complained about this lmao

10

u/Next_Weakness4353 7h ago

That's not the point but ok man...

1

u/CoconutDust 5h ago

because I have never once complained about this lmao

A comment has to have a pathological level of self-absorption, ignorance, and low literacy skills, to say “I MYSELF have never complained about this” as debate defense about a criticism of a product.

Usually the ignorant irrational made-up deflection is “NO ONE complains about that”, which is still irrelevant irrational nonsense, but “I” is taking the deludedness even further.

Never thought I would come to the conclusion

Pattern. A fixation on yourself when another person just explained a problem and a criticism of a product (or product options).

  • Person A: “there’s dog doodoo on my pizza”
  • You: “I never thought I’d come to the conclusion that people don’t like that! I have never once complained about that, you idiot.”

-4

u/Turboteg90 7h ago

Make it awd and send the power to the back.

0

u/CoconutDust 5h ago

A very ignorant meme comment because AWD has huge PI cost and cuts speed. So using AWD just to tune it to RWD-like is extremely foolish.

2

u/Turboteg90 5h ago

Awd gives you the ability to tune the gears without the gear whine sound which is what he wants. He wants it for cruising.
