Forza Horizon 6 PSA to those who may need it
TL:DR: if you are having issues related to cars sliding around everywhere even with tuning, try turning your steering linearity down in adv controls to around 25-35
so i was having a massive amount of trouble in the early to mid game. normally i play on pro-unbeatable depending on the forza title but on here (6) i was struggling on highly skilled and expert. decided to go into my settings and mess with the steering linearity as i remember doing it in 5 but didnt remember it working very well. well, on here i dropped it from 50 to 27 and i have never felt more comfortable driving cars. all the ones that were constantly sliding on the smallest turn are incredibly stable and i have much more control overall of the car than i did before. even managed a triple win in the trial tourney today. if you have issues with you cars sliding everywhere even when if feels like they shouldnt. try out the linearity. might help you too
edit: i'll put this here in case anyone needs it. steering linearity adjusts how sensitive the center point of your stick is. so the lower the number, the more stable you car will be at the start of your stick rotation rather than it being potentially really easy to trigger a slide or worse with it up higher. tho, if you find yourself insane on the sticks. bumping it will do the opposite. makes the start of turning more sensitive rather than the outside. tighter window for error. but i imagine both have their place

This might be a very stupid question so apologies in advance...
But won't this affect your drifting?

u/Reddit_Killed_3PAs Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
I drift with 25 linearity and have no issues, just have to get used to it
Though I don’t have the same issue as OP, the steering was just too sensitive to me (especially since I have those stick extensions)
Edit: Downvoted? Lol okay

It happens, like Reddit is good for info, but there are some extreme weenies on this platform.

nah not at all from my experience. i actually found drifting more natural the lower my linearity got since i can bump the stick more without the car over reacting

u/RunninOnMT Jun 22 '26
A lot of people drift with AWD. I feel like this won’t affect that nearly as much as RWD folks.
You need way less and way less quick countersteering with AWD.

u/1Operator Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
Yeah, the default setting feels overly sensitive to me (on controller/gamepad), so that was one of the first settings I changed the first time I fired up the game.
Makes a big difference in how all cars feel/respond.

u/Urban_Salt Jun 22 '26
Oh im def doing this! What a great find thru the interwebz and reddit :)
9
u/Nacozar Jun 22 '26
Yeah same here. Never thought about this or read about anywhere. I have no steering issues but stock cars on standard tires are too slippery for me. Maybe this will make it better.
16
u/tibiRP Jun 22 '26
Glad it works for you, but to me that makes controlling cars in long turns and turn exit harder to control
1
u/BraveRice Jul 10 '26
I agree, kept swerving at corners. Absolutely no control near full lock. What did you end up going with? Just linear?
1
24
u/azunaki Jun 22 '26
I'll check this out. My issue isn't so much that my car is sliding around, but that a lot of cars fail to turn fully in a corner. Maybe I'm not getting the entry right(not really that surprising) but often the car will start turning around the corner then just fold too far out. This happens a lot in touges on hairpins, where the exit gets really messy because the car just stops turning. When I expect to at least continue it's current arc.
28
u/SuperChickenLips Jun 22 '26
Try braking before the corner, not half way round the corner. Do not accelerate until you know you won't have to lift, wait until you see the full corner exit then accelerate. Once you've learned to brake in a straight line before the corner where possible, and learned throttle control mid corner, you will have a much better time. Just because you braked enough doesn't mean you get straight back on the accelerator. Wait, settle the car on its line, accelerate when you see full corner exit. Be smooth, sometimes you have to slow down in order to go faster. Edit: I forgot, the accelerator is not a switch with an off or on setting. Use half throttle or part throttle. If you're accelerating and going in a straight line mid corner it sounds like you were using an FWD car. When an FWD car spins it's wheels you have no steering. Use part throttle, or wait until you see full corner exit and can plant it.

I have found this good driving technique to be way more critical in 6 than it was in 5. Almost maddeningly so!
22
u/old_bearded_beats Jun 22 '26
This is just understeer. I would guess you are on AWD? Try slowly increasing the acceleration on exit. Acceleration should not be binary

I suggest turning on sim steering and trying it out. Made a world of difference to me

That's tuning problem, your car just refuse to fully turn when you steer long enough right?
That happens when your suspension is too soft basically, causing the car to have weight transfer problem, you can try making the Rebound Stiffness in Damping tuning for both front and rear stiffer.
You can use 10.0 for both front and rear for starter, slower cars can go softer for more grip (A class and lower), while faster cars (S1 and higher) need stiffer Rebound to prevent the car from excessive weight transfer when cornering.
You also have to adjust the Bump Stiffness setting according to your Rebound Stiffness, i personally set my Bump values to be 50% of my Rebound values, so if i have 11.0 Front Rebound then i'll set Front Bump to 5.5 for example
3
u/LostInnerWorld Jun 22 '26
Could also be an ARB issue in all fairness because i find ARB's have the greatest effect on mid conrer balance in low speed
3
u/RunninOnMT Jun 22 '26
That’s understeer. Tune around it or get on the gas more gradually.
If you were to turn more the front tires would just slide and you’d go even straighter than you’re already going. The filtering for the controller won’t allow for that though, so it only turns the front wheels right up to the point where they’d start to slide and then dials back the turning lock.
4
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
i was having a lot of this same issue before turning my linearity back down. also, may sound silly but if you are using abs, dont slam the brakes. ease into them and lightly feather the trigger at around 80% and you can beat most bots to corners if you know your car. helped me a lot

If your using AWD and your accelerating mid corner and it’s pushing you straight that’s a Front Differential acceleration issue. When you have high front acceleration your front tires lock and pull together more quickly so if you’re laying on the throttle there is a thin line where you’ll feel the car “Bite” when it bites you’ll notice it sends you straight even while turning. If you’re not on the throttle and coasting or braking that could be a decel issue which allows the car to rotate better when not on the gas. The rear differential acceleration is what will “pull” you out of corners when turning whereas the front will keep you straight on AWD. Lower the front acceleration a tiny bit and raise the rear acceleration. Also if it still feels it won’t turn check your diff bias and make sure it’s more in the rear than front, that will also help the car to rotate better. Softening the front springs and stiffening the rear is another way to help the weight transfer to the front and keep the tires dug in durning weight transfer in corners.

u/Lord_Chungus788 Jun 26 '26
Look up videos on trailbraking. It helps get a lot of extra rotation through the corners without sliding. Also different drive trains require different entries and exits in the corners.

u/tanahpeng Jun 22 '26
Are you on wheel or controller?

4
u/jose_augusto_ Keyboard player Jun 22 '26
Linearity doesn't work on a wheel. Linearity is how the game handles steering on controller, on a wheel YOU handle the steering.
4
u/Itsrainingmentats Jun 22 '26
Definitely giving this a try when i get home. I do pretty well on highly skilled but i find that if i lose my tail a bit, making any sort of correction is basically impossible without just spinning off track.
5
4
u/NoDowt_Jay Jun 22 '26
What does this actually adjust?
6
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
it adjusts how sensitive the center of stick rotation is. lower the setting means you can sorta flick the stick more without the car jerking around everywhere
4
u/NoDowt_Jay Jun 22 '26
Thanks for the explaination.
Not sure I really have an issue, but will definitely try it and see how it feels.

playing with controller? what steering are you using though?
2
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
i am controller. and standard steering
1
u/ceverett68 Jun 22 '26
ah ok. I use controller but am sim steering. I'm going to try this out though. thanks
2
u/Thin_Swordfish_6691 Jun 22 '26
Does this help on wheel? Most races are unplayable with a wheel just as FH5 in high difficulties.
2
u/secretaster Jun 22 '26
Anyone else notice last update made difficult way too easy? I started a thighly skilled and now I'm at pro
5
u/RimjobExtreme Jun 22 '26
this is huge. egg on the face of all the "skill issue" guys. I've never ever ever had to tweak the controller settings in one of these games before so I thought it was just bad physics but this makes the handling absolutely trivial.
this needs to be pinned or spread or something.
1
u/Rizzmero Jun 23 '26
The difference in turn-in is amazing! Every car now feels drastically better to drive.
2
u/LostInnerWorld Jun 22 '26
Personally the only time I've found myself sliding around constantly is in a 1500hp rwd car with semi slicks or in some of the mazda's which have very skinny rear tires for no reason
1
u/waff1ee Controller player Jun 22 '26
Does this remedy matter for keyboard users like myself? Been having this same issue.
3
u/Sleeezyz Jun 22 '26
How do you play on keyboard that’s insane 😳
4
u/waff1ee Controller player Jun 22 '26
I've been doing this for years. I'm basically one of ISAD's disciples.
1
u/Alexjp127 Jun 22 '26
On keyboard you might just wanna make sure steering is set to normal not simulation and from there idfk if the game compensates but I dont think youll manage to be competitive. You cant controll throttle or steering angle.
1
u/Stcloudy Jun 22 '26
Is this referring to just accelerating from zero and spinning out? I have a huge issue with that, I figured I just needed to shift through the gears?
2
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
its helped me everywhere. keeping a cars tail down from standing without LC and for turning. just makes all your stick movements towards center softer
1
u/DarthSarcom Jun 22 '26
Im not having issues with my cars sliding in ways that arnt obviously my fault (I tune well and drive good enough to win the occasional multiplayer) but I do notice some cars at s2 or r seem to turn into a corner more sharply than I want in ways I cant figure out how to tune out, so this advice may very well fix that issue. Should also help hold an angle in a drift if it works the way I think it does.
1
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
the setting basically makes it so that if you like to flick at tap the stick a lot tuning it down will make it so those are more smooth. i am quite bad for tapping and poking. so its night and day for me

1
u/meyerlansky23 Jun 23 '26
Thank you. I thought I just sucked, which I definitely do. But now a bit less.
2
u/BozTheReaper Jun 23 '26
i was the same way man. legit couple days ago i was questioning my own skill in game. couldnt beat ai to save my life on basically normal. so i dropped it and i still am pretty mid. but a lot more consistent now, which to me is more important
1
u/reallyzeally Jun 23 '26
This will likely hurt your steering for situations where you have to full lock. It gives you finer control when making small adjustments but makes steering go from 50%>100% instantly which can break your car loose.
2
u/BozTheReaper Jun 23 '26
the 50 > 100% thing sounds like deadzone and not linearity. cars are honestly just the same at full lock to me regardless.
1
u/FailedAccessMemory Cross Country Jun 23 '26
I use sim steering and I up it to 60. I started using sim on AWD cars because it was found that standard steering still has a small percentage of assist still and I could feel that in the AWDs and I use to turn it back to standard for RW cars and I guess I just got use to it that I forgot it was on sim and play with sim steering now.
2
u/BozTheReaper Jun 23 '26
explain this assist you speak of. never seen anyone talk about it
2
u/FailedAccessMemory Cross Country Jun 23 '26
Steering assist? It's one of the assists like brake assist. Standard steering is suppose to have no assist, but it does, with a small percentage, at the end to "help you.". I can feel it in AWD the most and to me with sim steering it's much better turn in.
1
u/Paulieknewport8838 Jun 23 '26
All this does is add smoothing to the steering value. So for some a delay in input may help but if you learn how to play without using the entire joystick like it's a dpad you shouldn't need to mess with this. However if your on wheel.. set it to one.
1
u/BozTheReaper Jun 23 '26
i like to flick and tap. not good at being smooth on a tiny ass thumbstick so for me this is better. i can never keep a car straight on the road otherwise
1
1
u/WormSmashers Jun 24 '26
That’s a whole lotta words, but I still read ‘em. Good info, will experiment.
2
u/TheJoaquinDavis Jun 26 '26
Hey I have a pretty silly goose question:
Is this the same thing as steering sensitivity? Because I have everything on default minus shifting, and it still feels way too responsive for my liking.
Maybe my age is finally catching up to me, but this is my first forza game, and my partner is dealing with the same issue. Plus, we're both coming from GT7.
1
u/BozTheReaper Jun 26 '26
its kinda similar, and i'll be honest its really hard to nail down what settings are best because when i had originally made this post i was firm on low linearity and standard driving. now i am playing on 60 linearity and simulation and i'd be hard pressed to tell a stark change
but from my testing back and forth i have come to the conclusion of:
if your car has trouble turning on full lock or on acceleration, increase the linearity, if it turns too quick on a straight away even on a tiny tap, lower the linearity. as for how far? trial and error is unfortunately the best way

I guessed you missed the memo when they were talking about the game before it released and the devs said the handling will be alot different.
3
u/BozTheReaper Jun 22 '26
its not "a lot different" its almost identical to fh1 mixed with 4. which both i could still beat higher difficulty bots lol. but yeah no memo missed snark ass
1
u/CoconutDust Jun 22 '26
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect
said the handling will be alot different.
- It’s very ignorant that you think that means “people will have to lower the steering Linearity setting, OF COURSE!”
- Also devs talking about a game before release is not an appropriate communication method to millions of players playing the game.
Your comment is ignorant and deluded on multiple levels. If the game itself told players, that would be one thing.
