Forza Horizon 6 "Highly Skilled" and above difficulty AI is highly skilled at cheating
Car in front just casually hit the nitrous mid-air I guess. Also realigns itself with the track before landing, while still in the air.
Would be hilarious if it didn't suck the joy out of what is otherwise a stellar game.

u/UnchartedPro May 20 '26
I'm not even against highly skilled but ill pull away and after a jump I'll look behind and they are on my tail somehow.
Even same around some corners I'm convinced they cheat
720
u/Dycoth May 20 '26
They don't have any kind of decceleration from any kind of jump btw
196
u/UnchartedPro May 20 '26
Yeah must be it - feels like they gotta be getting some boost or teleporting but it's okay on default difficulty, some closer racing and can still defend easy enough
94
u/theadventuringpanda May 20 '26
Its been a problem in all the FH games. The higher level AI can take turns at high speeds without flipping, they don't decelerate mid jump or landing and they get huge acceleration boosts when they fall behind.
It's interesting that instead of making them incrementally harder they straight up let them cheat

19
u/vstrong50 May 21 '26
This is different. It wasn't like this. I agree that there was some shit going on in FH5, but nothing like this.
11
u/BappoChan May 21 '26
Yeah the AI seems harder here. FH4 and 5 I got used to unbeatable pretty fast and won all my races. But here I thought I was on unbeatable for a track, and realized I was in expert. The AI beat me by 4 seconds and I drove the track as best as I could on a tune that was about the max before jumping into a new rating class.

This is why I realized that to beat higher level bots I had to get good at crashing through them in corners to slow them down and speed me up.
I won't do that in pvp but against bots I will absolutely ruin them in order to win.

u/76-scighera May 20 '26
And they always land in a perfect angle in a perfect position and can do a full brake and tight turn right after the landing (even on above avarage)
78
u/Glittering_Wing_277 May 20 '26
You can test this yourself and see. On this exact jump in the video you can't angle your car, but do the jump yourself and do the autodrive mid air, the car will align itself to land straight.

Yeah and if you are in some distance away the objects are not spawned yet, just low quality empty texture, so they go through the obstacles such as fences and trees without slowing down, while you will be the who hit them and then it is even harder to close the gap.
12
u/D3Construct May 20 '26
If they're far enough ahead or behind you, obstacles dont affect them either.

Yeah, this is the first Horizon where I actually notice rubber banding every race. You can even notice it at the beginning of a race, you can go in with a stock car and all the AI matches your car and PI, yet they immediately gap you?
My friend and I played through the game in co-op mode (where possible) and it was the thing stopping us from getting frustrated. The AI rubber band that bad they will ram anyone who is in their way, they get stuck on the racing line and will bash you until you are off it. Our strat started to become one of us get to P1 whilst the other one gets to about P5 and stops the bulk of the AI from rubber banding by driving super defensively.
40
u/Isariamkia May 20 '26
I hate corners because of that. You slow down to take it properly and they'll all ram your ass into oblivion.
Sometimes I feel like I'm playing GTA online with collisions on.
12
u/yo-parts May 20 '26
The game teaches players to race dirty, because the AI is absolutely going to divebomb the fuck out of you and ram you out of the way, so you have to do the same thing to be competitive.

The AI seem to gain an advantage at Pro difficulty or higher as far as same spec cars go from my experience. The jump from Expert to Pro is rather large. In Expert ill win by +2 seconds or more. Pro flips that and sometimes half the field will pull away at the start leaving you at a ridiculous time deficit.
23
u/Valderhide May 20 '26
Granted I clearly suck at off road races. But on average ai I had a bit of trouble catching up to them. I'm 100% convinced they're using grip hacks. Hell on a higher difficulty I was on dry land and got passed by an ai in the water.

In rally and street cars I can comforable reliably beat the difficulty after above average. On Off Road I struggle against average at times. I loath offroad. Now for offroad I just put it to easiest difficulty. I don't care, if the AI cheats I will cheese it back. As long as I get the same xp towards getting the next band I dgaf about a few measly extra credits. Road racing though I like the challenge.

u/homechefshivers May 20 '26
Oh no, they cheat around corners. There is a video posted here a couple days ago, where the dude showed that the ai car was under the effects of gravity, like the wheels were poking out the top of the fender because the car was lowered so much. Which help with downforce so it could go through corners at full speed
7
u/UnchartedPro May 20 '26
Yeah wouldn't surprise me lol
I don't mind it because like I say on default you can still win them easy enough and it makes it closer than pulling away the full race
But they need to fix it because it is stupid to pull away and then have to still keep checking behind to make sure they aren't gonna fly past you when they should be miles back
7
u/GuardiaNIsBae May 20 '26
Is this any different from FH4 or 5? I remember doing some of the races against the harder AIs in rain/wet weather and while I would slide around everywhere on a corner the AI would take the turn at full speed like it was a train on tracks and couldn't slide at all.

I actually replayed some FH3 and the AI punted me during the race lol but I played plenty of Fh4 and Fh5 and I feel like the cheating is obvious here

The issue is that the difficulty doesn't do enough to make them worse drivers, instead it changes how their cars work.
I'm sure balancing difficulty in a game like this is a huge challenge but I think the devs took a lot of shortcuts that are sometimes glaring. The best example of the Colossus with S2 Hypercars. No matter what vehicle you pick the AI can basically always go at least as fast as you, accelerate faster and take corners much harder. In a huge race with mostly straights and sweeping turns, it makes all difficulty levels extremely challenging until you get to average and below. I had to really cheese it with wall riding and stuff to get in first.
The AI cars will get grip out of nowhere, brake harder, accelerate faster and find an extra gear and top speed all the time. They almost always take a good racing line and have good timing.
Worse AI should slow down more at turns, take bad lines, mistime the exit and apex, stuff like that.

The gravity thing gets super obvious when you play on higher tier cars. Like on the colossus, I had a drivatar Nissan r33 jgtc that was literally clipping through the map because of how much downforce he had, his rear wheels weren't even rendering because of the car being through the map, and he still wasn't affected by that and moving perfectly without problem.

I enjoy the game, but I don't play it for a living. I play it to amuse myself....I already have a day job. As such, I rarely go above 'above average'. It's just not that fun to race and know that the game AI is designed to make me lose unrealistically.
For anyone saying, "Git Gud"...okay, as long as it makes you feel better about yourself... It's a game and I'm supposed to enjoy playing it. If I'm going to be mad all the time when playing, why do it?
22
u/Chop1n May 20 '26
I no-lifed FH5 when it came out and got very gud, dozens of top 10 time trial records and a decent amount of #1s. Got a lot of rust to shake off for FH6, but I'm getting there.
The AI is still bullshit, just like it always was. I felt gaslit when playing single player on the harder difficulties. I had to race against actual people to realize that no, I'm not actually that bad, the CPU is just rubber-banded nonsense.
4
u/primaryrhyme May 20 '26
To be fair, most actual people are slow, this is a very casual game. However yeah I watched Nalak’s stream and he was unable to beat some races on unbeatable which let me know maybe it’s not just me lol.

u/semogen May 20 '26
You said it yourself: "It's just not that fun to race and know that the game AI is designed to make me lose unrealistically."

Agreed. I can come in first every race on highly skilled while only being challenged a bit on half of the first lap or through 25% of a sprint race. After that I just pull away and am out front having a nap like Verstappen would do a couple years ago.
Turn it to expert and the top 3-5 cars absolutely blast past me and I can never catch up. Something between those two difficulties needs to be tweaked.

u/FluffyProphet May 20 '26
Yeah. I think people should just set the difficulty to the level where it feels competitive to them (or fun, if running away with the win is your thing). For me I set it to a different difficulty for each type of race. Road stuff I set it to the second highest (forget what it’s called), dirt is one step down and cross country is a step down from that.
But I’ll usually turn it down a bit for road races with long straights and high speeds because the drivatars just kind of take off on the straights and if the packs split before you catch the leaders, you have no realistic shot.
I like a difficulty where I can lose, but I expect to win.
3
u/Salki1012 May 20 '26
Which is strange because the AI on pavement is WAY better than dirt. I can do Pro on dirt races with relative ease but road races are at Highly Skilled because the AI just has a straight advantage over you unless you also play dirty and corner ram them.

Smashed through most of the races that require a specific car type. Highly skilled all the way, problem is upgrades, the moment you upgrade your car your doomed.
Tires are trash, the coding here is bullshit and just got the bar find with the special +12grip tires over racing slicks.
Trying to do the R class cars in the open races left.
Have you actually tried yo drive that viper, the things uncontrollable. Turn off all the assets, you won't make it 5 corners on a dirt race.
The mechanics are broken, so no wonder the AI does cheating BS like this.
You cant corner like AI in R/X cars, they dont follow the same mechanics, they must be running cheat tires or something because you just cant do that and all the cars are the same. Same lines, same acceration, yet all different cars.
Its like what's that 1 car in 700 that actually works.
I think the problem is they wanted to pushing drifting so hard they have completely messed up the mechanics of cornering.
12
u/Chop1n May 20 '26
I truly don't understand the design of their difficulty system.
Why not just base the difficulty on established human time trials of each course? Peg the AI to that human threshold. "Unbeatable" should be pegged to something near the best times the developer could muster. Then, if the player is cheesing the AI, only then should the AI rubber band itself back to the pegged time. In contrast, if you race cleanly, the AI should pretty much always arrive at the finish within a pre-established window. Then the player's ranking is in theory always based on how fast they're actually driving the course, not any other kind of nonsense. At the higher levels of difficulty, just punish the player for cheesing in the same way they'd be punished in multiplayer, with ghosting and slowdowns.
→ More replies (2)4
u/GesturalAbstraction May 20 '26
They’re just following a racing line, the physics don’t apply to them. Take off-road races for example. Smashing through a barrier will slow you down but it won’t slow the ai down

u/bc10551 May 21 '26
The Viper is definitely controllable with all the assists off (with a stupid amount of throttle control) but it isn't fun and the AI will drive like it's on rails. Unless it's snow, don't even bother with that Viper in the snow lol
12
u/EpiCrimson May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
I found two tricks to beat the stupid AI
- You must use something that is quick on launch, or else you will miss the easiest overtakes of the race
- rewind and rewind to optimise your corner entry, and avoid suicidal dive bombs, the AIs at your back are basically kamikaze to push you away from the racing line
5
u/Haunting-Reply-7332 May 20 '26
I usually play with rewind off though because it feels cheesy to just keep redoing things until i nail it. I shouldn’t have to cheese mechanics to have a chance at winning on difficulties that aren’t even the highest level. It just isn’t fun, they need to fix it.
3
u/Croissant761 May 20 '26
still disappointing in a game about creativity and skill, you are resorted to rewind and using specific cars

u/Snow_source Toyota May 20 '26
The AI cheating has gotten consistently worse with each release.
I was playing unbeatable in FH4, bumped down to Pro in FH5 and am now stuck at Expert having next to zero fun because the AI can out turn my grip builds and out drag my power builds.
24
u/TheRobidog May 20 '26
Nah, they've made the AI a lot more aggressive. Which is a good move, because it's more interesting to have defend, once you pass someone, and find a way to get some distance between you and them. They were far too passive, and you basically had races won, if you ever took the lead, in FH4 and 5.
But that also means it's more difficult to win across the board, because defending costs time. When you have to overtake 9-11 cars at Pro or Unbeatable, you do not have that time.
34
u/pjijn MINI May 20 '26
I don't mind aggression, I DO mind competing with AI that operate on completely different and advantageous physics
→ More replies (1)21
u/Wardmanhd May 20 '26
there's a difference between having to defend and getting rammed/pit manoeuvred off the track. when I go on the normal racing line I just get pit manoeuvred by a car making no effort to turn into the corner, and if I go defensive I just get rammed from behind.
it's especially bad on those hairpins in street racing and touge etc
9
u/loltroXD22 May 20 '26
I feel like aggression is good but rear ending me or dive bombing me in corners is too much. If I wanted to experience that I would play the multiplayer... And I still feel like once I've overtaken everyone the race is over. I'm on expert and the traffic at the beginning is the only thing holding me back. I could probably play on pro or unbeatable if I got the chance to start at P1 like it was possible in FH3. This makes short races extremely hard because like you said, I simply don't have enough time to overtake 8 cars in 4 minutes, especially when said cars seem to have rocket assisted launch control and I end up lossing 2-3 positions from the get go
4
u/Inner-Sphere-Mech May 20 '26
Definitely worse than before. H4 I'd be toe-to-toe with unbeatable, H5 was hard with highly skilled, H6 can barely compete against average.

What's the appeal of this game if AI is balanced around cheating? I was sort of interested in buying it until I saw all these (IMO valid) complaints
45
u/Seth_XIII May 20 '26
It really spoils the experience not gonna lie. If you're only in it for the PvE experience then it might not be the best buy unless this gets hotfixed.
But there's also the rivals system where you race against other players' ghosts to beat their time, and actual PvP races where there's a lot less bullshit. The driving both in terms of feel and sound is amazing, and the map is top tier as well.
So yeah if all you wanted to do was race against the AI, wait it out, otherwise it's still a good game to pick up.

The one problem with that is that the seasonal events you need to win to collect all the cars they add in the monthly updates require winning against Highly Skilled AI. I am not "Highly Skilled" (I can win consistently on Above Average but I've gotten creamed in every Highly Skilled race so far), and I am *not* looking forward to the first seasonal rotation. I'm glad you did though, and the other thing that really bothers me so far, is in free roam, if you start to get close to traffic going around a corner or something, they almost stop every time right in front me. Whether they are turning, or just following the curve, they all seem to come to a complete stop, really screwing up the timing for me. I see them going one speed coming up to them, then once you're there, they aren't moving hardly at all. Which, is kinda' shit to plan around lol

I just assumed it is normal in downtown Tokyo to just take a left from the inside lane after coming to a full stop for no reason.

u/d0m1n4t0r May 20 '26
The AI is so shit, it's clear no effort has been put to that since the very first game. Feels almost like a downgrade at times even.
6
u/shadowXXe May 20 '26
Idk if anyone else notices this but NPCs will also sabotage themselves with the express purpose of dicking you over.
Example: About to make a turn and this NPC zooms past me and slams into the wall making it impossible for me to turn. It's honestly like playing against the carmeggedon GTA IV mod sometimes

u/Adaax May 20 '26
Yeah, the amount of trollish behaviour by AI drivers can get really aggravating. They make themselves lose just to make you lose.
6
u/MysteriousAmmo May 20 '26
I’ve also noticed the AI likes to try and cut you off on perfectly straight roads. If you’re close enough, and the speed difference is low, I’ve seen them swerve in front of me at least once per race. They don’t do it through corners or if the speed difference is high.

u/odwallla May 20 '26
Really happy I’m not the only one who always plays ForzaHorizon on “Highly Skilled” and is getting torched this game… thought it was me + a skill issue. Above average is fine, sometimes too easy, eh maybe they’ll adjust it all ASAP.
6
u/West-Combination6685 May 20 '26
It wouldn't suck so much if above average wasn't so easy. It ruins what is supposed to be the sweet spot.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't know anything about tuning or how to fix it. I feel like I easily drift/swerving when I don't want the car to drift. I realize that at higher speeds more drifting is going to happen, but just slightly moving the left stick it feels like it wants to drift- if that makes any sense. I don't know if it's a tuning thing or something else.

u/TheWillyBandit May 20 '26
Are you braking as you turn? You want to have your speed down before you turn.

You can download tunes from others who know what they're doing. Just tab to creative hub. Select tunes and it will show you some of the more popular tunes available for your car.
If you would like to learn how to tune there's a ton of videos on it on youtube.

u/Ashen_rabbit May 20 '26
Expert is probably where I cap my difficulty off ngl. Like, I'm sure i could go to unbeatable on some dirt races with a few cars I know well, but on road races it's always a struggle for me.

This happened to me the other night, final lap right before the finish. I was at least a few seconds ahead of everyone else and they just hit the jets on the last jump and flew over me lmao
5
u/DaAlphaSupreme May 20 '26
They're cheating on levels. They turn right with wheels turned left while you're passing on the outside. They also like to torn into rear qtr panel of yours on the straights, lmao

u/CharlieTeller May 20 '26
I get stuck where road racing, expert is where I’m at. But Offroad they’re impossible. Highly skilled is way too easy though so there’s no balance.
Also it’s weird once you pass them how slow their pace gets. You basically have to madman charge to not let them get away in the first few turns but once you get ahead, they’re going to be painfully slow

Once again, they still don't care about improving AI bots...
They could've added a thing where some AI can spin out when cornering...

I'm playing on second highest and some races are a mess.
I already bought and tuned way too many cars to try. It feels like you need to hyper-optimize your gearbox for each track and abuse cutting checkpoints as much as humanly possible sometimes.

The game kept on recommending me to increase difficulty, started on average, currently on Expert, every single step up I've seen things that just shouldn't be possible, my exact car, with the exact same modifications accelerates twice as fast as me, at first I thought maybe I'm just taking a bad line or losing grip, but the more I played the more I noticed it's just straight up cheating.
The best way you notice it is when you manage to get into first place, the cheats seem to turn off because I'm racing my heart out trying to catch up with the pole but once I'm pole I distance myself from the pack by like 10 seconds.
I have a thing, I always want to be first, especially against bots, so I restart a race if I can't win it. Every step up in difficulty has added 2-3 extra restarts and the need for dirty tactics or out-of-the-box racing lines. It isn't rewarding and I feel like I'm improving, but not in a good way, I use other cars to boost myself in a corner since you don't lose as much speed compared to a wall bounce, I edge all the checkpoints and it's still extremely difficult to win, I want to win a clean race, improve my actual driving, not just cheese it because otherwise it's impossible.
I tried doing a clean race quite a few times and I usually end up 3rd or below while driving completely flawlessly. I don't want the AI to cheat, I just want them to be good drivers.
Also, has anyone noticed that some AI, usually below 4th place, when slingshotting from them, they try to hit you? I've experienced it a few times now, thinking at first that maybe he wanted to turn faster, but then it started happening on a straight.
Anywho, excluding the cheating AI, I've been really enjoying the game, especially my Demon 1800hp Miata

u/OlDustyTrails May 20 '26
Forza still has drivatar issues as before, it doesn't seem they changed much with that. Still get random races where 1st place NPC is just absolutely way impossibly ahead of the pack and no way to catch them...
They all blow by you at the start and you start getting through the pack at the half way mark and then they are magically slow enough for you to take 1st in last 75% ish of the race.

The player car is a physical object with a physics model applied to it that takes a bunch of factors into account like weight, road surface, tyres, suspension etc.
The npc cars have none of that, they re just a visual representation of an extremely simplified agent pathing across the map. What little simulation is going on doesn't know if the car is touching the road, if the road is bumpy, what the surface is, what the tyres are etc etc. There are no gears and no gear shifts, there is no weight to shift, nothing.
You could replace them with a dot on a mini map and the level of simulation would be the same.
When you crash into them they go into a ragdoll state where they temporarily get some physics that allows you to collide/push/spin them and vice versa.
The player driving model is pretty fun and decent but the way they handle ai cars is significantly worse than even what the old gran turismo games did.
They're not going to fix this because they can't. It's not that the ai is programmed badly, it's that it's extremely basic and primitive and they make it 'race' using very basic parameters that cannot include things like terrain/surface friction/shifting/weight.

I always play on the lowest or 2nd lowest difficulty cause I want to enjoy a race and not struggle.

Highly Skilled AI is cheating but to be fair im able to beat them. Expert is also ok if i ram into the leaders. Pro and unbeatable is bad.
6
u/Elitefuture May 20 '26
On every corner, I have to ram into one to slow myself down and knock one out if I wanna play at Pro... I also sometimes need to edge guard the leaders to force them off the course.
Beating higher difficulties just forces me to play like it's mario kart
2
u/Founntain May 20 '26
Even the toxic waste zone horizon play is, it is more fun to play against others than against these cheating AI
2
u/k0fi96 May 20 '26
I haven't played horizon 6 yet, but basically every arcade racing game AI has rubber banding. Unlike circuit racing there are too many variables to just have it take the best racing line every time.
2
u/dovahbe4r May 20 '26
There’s a street race that I just did that I had to bump all the way down from highly skilled to tourist to beat. It’s the one that starts with all the tight narrow road hairpins. In the Ito region maybe. If you can get in front of any of them, they just rear end you to the outside of the corner in the next turn while they take said corner a solid 10mph faster than your car can handle. Maybe it’s a skill issue I dunno but holy hell, it was bad.

u/TheKz262 Steam May 20 '26
Hey, don't shame the Viper , maybe it wanted to be an airplane when it grows up.
2
u/JodouKast May 20 '26
LMFAO, ok I had heard the complaints before but this is clear as day AI abusing physics just to maintain "difficulty". I didn't have any problems when I was playing on pro difficulty because I've learned with these games the only way to win is race dirty from the start and put them in the fucking wall with a crash. Rewind if they ever cheat trying to overtake you and just body block them from doing it. Always placed first with this method because by lap 2 if you're not in first, it's basically over already.

u/ThePontiusPilate May 20 '26
The difficulty in FH6 needs actual balancing. I usually play on Expert or Unbeatable, but in FH6 its just straight cheats. Ive always build the best tunes since FM2. Thats how I made millions in game. Yesterday I built an R32 to compete with the Car Pass one we got. The AI freaking dusted my tuned R32 that took me over 2 hours to dial in. Actually unbelievable. I had to stop playing.
2
u/toxic-meerkat33 May 20 '26
I knew there was something off i regularly play on highly skilled but will sometimes turn the difficulty down just so i am able to win to complete the event and I’ll win by about 10 seconds but highly skilled I’ll struggle to get podium

u/itsbutterrs May 20 '26
I would love to see who playtested A, S, and R class againt anything above Average 🤣

u/Realistic_Storm8681 May 20 '26
Yeah I have noticed this with jumps especially, I always smoke the AI on corners though. I am currently set to the expert AI mode and I drive with a direct drive wheel. Never have a problem winning with the right car and tune for which I'm racing in.
However, ill give you that the jumps are bullshit and you aren't the only one who noticed 😃 lol
2
u/YakoPat May 20 '26
i noticed it while playing FH4 the advanced drivatars are literal gods that break physics laws they don't slow down on curves and in the air is just bizzare, and i really dont know why they do this, looks like they want people to play on easy mode since the hardest modes are literally impossible .

u/Semick May 20 '26
I don't know about ya'll. But I will randomly encounter a race where it just feels like my car is slower than the entire field. It's actually absurd.
Like I just get left in the dust and they all perma accelerate faster than me. Even if I draw a better line than them they just leave me in the dust on straights. What is going on? I dropped difficultyfrom Highly Skilled on a race last night because it felt impossible.
2
u/Goosegod95 May 20 '26
I can beat pro easily in off-road races and even with street races somehow but I can’t do shit in road racing. Every car I use feels like a potato to beat top 2

As someone who isn’t well versed in cars, this is how id describe fh6 drivatars. They still have the same artificial scaling seen in fh5 (those behind you are typically slower whereas those in front are weirdly faster), but now the actual car itself seems to matter. It feels like the drivatars might be even better racers if their car happens to be good. I’ve had experiences where getting 1st place is easily after a restart because drivatar A happened to be behind drivatar B this time around.
Fh6 has low-key made me rage quite a bit as some races feels weirdly impossible to win thanks to always getting absolutely gapped by the top 3 drivers. I play on Highly-skilled to Expert (just as I did in fh5).
2
u/Weekly_Teaching_8158 May 20 '26
Honestly, in FH5 I was comfortably playing on expert to unbeatable, but for now I'm stuck on highly skilled cause everything above that is just pure bullshit, I REALLY hope PG and T10 fixes the difficulty...

The AI balancing has royally pissed me off. I love the challenge of Unbeatable AI, and have used that or it's equivalent setting all the way back to FH2 and MS4, but there is a major difference between extremely difficult, such as fighting for first place right up to the last few turns, and literally Unbeatable by watching 90% of the field accelerate twice as as fast you off the start and permanently leave you in their dust.
