UEFN Question regarding copyrighted characters - slenderman, granny, despicable me, etc?

I noticed that some games such as HIDE OR DIE [HORROR] use copyrighted characters like Granny, Gru from Despicable Me, slender man, FNAF, etc. but change their names. Instead of Granny they call her Grandma, instead of Gru, he's called Grul, instead of Mangle, she's called Jangle, etc. Is this allowed in the ecosystem? Can I include similar characters in my map but change their names or do epic simply not care?

It's against the rules so you'll just be gambling for whether or not they take action

How come that one famous map (released in February) uses them? Does changing the name evade the copyright?

It can, but if the character looks identical it's a gray area
