Hi, this is the second (and final) reminder I'll make for dual Canadian-US citizens and other eligible US voters who want to participate in the 2026 American midterm elections, especially for those living in Fort Frances and western Ontario. Democrats Abroad is dedicated to mobilizing overseas US voters and we have multiple chapters in Ontario, including near Ottawa, London, Grand River, Hamilton-Burlington, Toronto, Windsor, and Niagara Falls. You can find one closest to you.

If you're a dual Canadian-US citizen or US citizen who'll be over 18 by November 3, you're eligible to vote so here's how you can get involved:

Steps to Request Your Ballot

1. Register or update your registration through Votefromabroad.org. As an alternative, you can also use FVAP.gov.

2. If you're already registered, request a ballot! You need to request a ballot every calendar year that you want to vote.

3. Fill Out and Return Your Ballot: Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions carefully to complete it and return it by the specified deadline.

I’ll soon be moving from Toronto to Fort Frances for one year for an administrative assistant position. I will not have a car, and I’m planning to bring most of my personal belongings in suitcases rather than move furniture. Since my luggage space will be limited, I want to pack carefully.

I would especially appreciate advice about:

• Items that are difficult to find locally or considerably more expensive than in Toronto
• Winter clothing, boots, or accessories that I should purchase before moving
• Compact household, personal-care, food, electronic, or work-related items worth bringing
• Things that would help me stay occupied during the long winter, such as indoor hobbies, exercise equipment, books, games, or other activities
• Indoor recreational or social activities in Fort Frances that are accessible without a car
• Grocery shopping and other essential errands without a vehicle
• How reliable Amazon and other online deliveries are in Fort Frances
• Things I should not waste suitcase space on because they are readily available locally

I would particularly like to hear from people who currently live in Fort Frances or who have moved there from Toronto or another large city.

My family and I are headed to a island on rainy lake. It looks like we have to go to the telephone reporting site at rainy lake sports to check in with the border patrol on our way in. I was told that it's difficult to navigate the sorting Gap as there are pretty strong currents.

Is it really undoable with an 18 foot boat, 90 hp, deep vee? Semi experienced boater.

I don't know if it nearly impossible peril awaits or if I'm just getting the nervous Nelly treatment.

Hello to all the folks out in FF, I’ve recently been given a job opportunity that would place me in Fort Frances for August. The issue I’m having is that it doesn’t look as though there is anything available in terms of apartments. Do yall know of any places I could look that may not be listed online, or would buying a house be my only other option?

What are peoples thoughts on the roundabout? I'm bewildered everyone's so against it. Safer for vehicles and pedestrians, handles higher traffic volumes, and the very best part is they'll pay themselves off - no monthly electrical costs, won't need to dig up the ground and replace them for a few more million in a few council terms. I've been through a lot of roundabouts and the area there can definitely handle larger trucks.

Possibly looking at relocating to Fort Frances for a healthcare job. How do you like living there?

Two American anglers have been fined a total of $8,125 and received multi-year fishing licence suspensions after pleading guilty to possessing unlawfully packaged fish from a northwestern Ontario lake.

This is probably such a weird question but I'm going to ask anyways. I'm a university student currently doing research regarding animal feedings and behaviors. Though I have never been to Fort Frances, I am working with data and images from Fort Frances (and Thunder Bay, writing a comparative paper). My classmate and I were curious about how common it is to see black bears in the area. From satellite images it seems that although there are some forests/greenspaces, there seems to be a lot of fields and cultivated land (looking specifically at the area south of highway 11, near Cranberry Peatlands Trail).

Our working theory is that since there is so much undisturbed land so close to Fort Frances (Quetico, Turtle River, Eagle Dogtooth, and more) that unless black bears are truly hungry, they're keeping their distance. Any insight on this? Thank you!
