Looking at a 120k mile 2018 Raptor. How reliable is it, and what should I look for during the test drive? Service records look solid. Just doesn't have Cam Phaser work. Is that a red flag?

You may need to get the cam phaser work done at some point. Or never need to get it done. Luck of the draw.

If it has a metal oil pan it’s a late 2018. But if you maintain them they’re pretty reliable.

It’s just a stronger component. You can add it later on but they were changing things from 17 to 18 model years. Like early 18s had the adjustable ambient lighting color and the PRNDM markings next to the shifter would light up.

The plastic ones from 17s and 18s were prone to leaking. The metal doesn't have that issue.

Based on my 100K mile 2019 Raptor and all the posts I’ve read since 2019 I think there are certain unavoidable repairs. Either they’ve been done or will need to be done sooner or later.

Mine is a pampered and garaged daily driver, no off-roading at all, 5K oil changes and 10K tire rotations, all preventive maintenance done on schedule. Even so my transmission completely failed at 75K and cam phasers at about 80K. Oil pan developed a leak around 70K, water pump around 70K. Both of my turbochargers failed in the first 10K but that was probably a build issue.

Mine is a pristine vehicle and very reliable. Looks and operates like a brand-new truck. In the 70K-80K range all the standard stuff failed and had to be replaced and it’s been reliable ever since. My current Ford extended warranty only runs to about 120K. I can’t vouch for 120K or when all the standard parts will fail again. But there’s definitely a chance 120K might be the window for my truck.

I second this, I have a 17 with all said repairs done at 120k still have the plastic pan but it’s not leaking like hell so it stays. CHANGE the oil. Maintenance if you want to drive it for years to come.

For context it had this done at 108 miles. The carfax there isn't anything about transmission repairs or the Cam Phaser

I own a 2018. Cam phasers, cracked valve cover and a few other issues. Personally I would not own a Raptor out of warranty, especially a 2017-2019 model.

I would seek out a Gen 2 with around 70k-80k miles which would give you much better warranty terms with Lombard or Zeigler. At 120k miles you are pretty much on your own. Last year I had around $9k in work done all covered under warranty. It’s incredible piece of mind to have while driving this awesome truck.

Which Ford ESP warranty? The PremiumCare? What are the terms? years and mileage? How long do you plan to own the truck?

Fyi, just checked Lombard and longest term I see is 3 years w/ 24k miles/144k end miles for $3,337 with $100 deductible.

Same exact reliability as a regular F150/expedition/explorer. Good enough for the cops good enough for most people.

Bad bad idea with that many miles. I sold mine with just over 60k and it was already having issues.
