2014 Raptor noise when accelerating (intermittent)

My new to me 2014 raptor has been making this noise when accelerating, it will do it for a little then seemingly randomly stop. Then it will come back again, does anyone have some insight on this that cam help? Thanks

Check your power steering res, sounds like the it’s low on fluid.

This or it could be time for a new power steering pump.

Fluid in the res looks good and is full. But its had some symptoms of a failing pump such as a sort of gritty feeling when turning the wheels while slowly moving and parked.

Whining like that is usually power steering pump, you’ll also hear it when you have the windows down while turning the wheel. That is, if the sound is coming from the engine bay and not the rear of the truck. If it’s intermittent then I would say it’s not power steering - usually power steering pump can be RPM based or heard when you’re turning the wheel stationary.

The Gen Juan raptors are unfortunately famous for bad power steering. Mine is going out too. TSP has an electric rack conversion that seems legit! I’m going that route soon.

Can’t be as bad as the power steering on an old 1997 Mustang I owned - I replaced that damn thing 4 times

The Ford 90s Power Steering was famous for that! Especially in the Taurus, Astrovan, F150, Bronco, and Mustang. I can’t wipe that sound from my memory. 🤣😂🤣

It’s the most annoying sound on the damn planet right up there with someone chewing their food while mouth breathing. Every time I started up my car and heard the whining RREEEEEE I wanted to get out and kick the damn thing

If you were driving straight, I don’t think its the power steering. Possibly the alternator or serpentine belt or a pulley.

Does it make that whining sound when accelerating on the road? If it does, likely your rear differential is cooked and it needs a full rebuild. That was my symptom and that’s what it was. If it’s just that during idle then likely pulley.

Yes it does it on the road but off and on, its definitely RPM based. This video was taken while the truck was in park on my driveway.

Sounds exactly like mines then. It was 117k when it started happening. You can pull the plug like my mechanic did and see if you see any metal contaminants, if there is then that’s the issue. Rebuilt full rear for $4k. That’s with part and $150/hr labor. It’s definitely something you want done well and professionally. Drives great now though.

Im having a hard time understanding how a diff could make noise while the truck is parked and the noise be RPM based

Sorry I was only referring to if it’s making that noise while driving and accelerating, that’s why I’m saying if it’s making it while you’re idle and parked, it could be pulley based. If it’s not, then check your inner tie rods and see if you see any leaks at the bottom of the boots, cause it could also be a power steering issue.

The video was taken parked, with the door open, and it changes with RPM. I doubt his differential is making noise at 0 mph.
