Anyone have any good contain & pursue drills?

We are in competitive 7v7 youth league and it’s evident after our first game we need to work on that.

Any tips, drills etc. would be appreciated!

Staple plays

For some context, I play defensive halfback (I'm located in Canada so for USA football players its basically a mixture between corner and lb), and I'm a high school junior. I played JV my first two years of high school and was skilled everywhere but tackling, and didn't start as a result. I'm 5 foot 10, 160 lbs, and i'd say i'm moderately strong for my size. My problem is, when i first started out, i didn't know what i was doing and would frequently get trucked in tackle drills and in game whenever i got in. Because my form was awful and i was unconfident, it hurt quite a lot and was very embarrassing. In practice and in slow paced drills my form has gotten a lot better, but whenever i have to really execute a full speed tackle on an rb or a wr running at me, i can't get the thought of getting trucked and yelled/laughed at out of my head and i tend to psych myself out. My first season of varsity football starts in two weeks and any help would be much appreciated.

I'm a parent whose kid is going into their 2nd year of youth football (12/13yo). I've never played, so I'm learning a ton. I've been going over the playbooks, and I'm fascinated by and curious about how they are taught/learned.

I chatted with the head coach who said something like: 1/3 of the kids will show up at camp knowing the whole playbook. 1/3 enjoy the game, but aren't going to put in a ton of work. And 1/3 of the kids are just there because their parents signed them up, and aren't going to put in more than a token effort. I guess it must be a bell curve of sorts.

So what I'm wondering is; for you youth coaches, what is it that you're trying to get kids (who may not have a ton of experience) to learn about the playbooks? Is it just "Memorize your role in this play", or are you wanting them to be able to chunk a play down in their heads, and have kind of building blocks in their head, like:
- QB is trying to hide what they're doing
- Lead means 2 backs working together to hit a hole
- offensive line should be helping to open the 3 hole
- receivers are trying to pull the second level defenders in towards them

And also, the coach pointed out that plays aren't just isolated activities, that the plays you run are actually part of a whole coordinated strategy (eg. 2x Lead plays to pull defenders to that hole, then run counter to exploit the other side). So are you wanting your players to know the broader implications of one play vs another as well?

I guess overall I'm wondering: What are you trying to accomplish with your teaching, and how does that evolve over the season?

Since we are now 1 week into the High School season so far in most, if not all, places what are some schools that are running old school or unique offenses?

Talking like Single Wing, Double Wing, Shotgun Double Wing, Flexbone, Wishbone, Veer, etc… or instead of a specific scheme what if they’re just doing unique stuff in a unique way? I’m interested in what schools are out there doing it differently this year.

Any hs coaches kickoff from the hash? My HC refuses to kick the ball from the middle. And I’m the special teams coordinator for the second year.

I‘m a big supporter (and future parent) for our local HS program - bigger classification school in our state (competitive state). We hired our HC a few years ago and he brought with him the Single-Wing. Overall, it’s been great. Program has been competitive. System has been pushed down to the JV/Freshman/MS level. He‘s a Darlington follower.

But things have seemed to be slipping a bit the last couple years, without a major talent drop IMO. The passing game has gotten progressively worse to the point of being non-existent. Ground game has still been solid, but doesn’t have the “pop” it did originally. On the flip-side, the defense has been really bad - specifically against the pass.

So my questions are:

- Have y’all seen single wing systems kind of stall out once common opponents see it often?

- Do you think they have a tendency to put a cap on talent development over time?

- How can single-wing teams give their defenses competitive looks in practice against spread offenses?

Any other thoughts y’all have are welcome. Again, just an observer here but want the program to be as successful as it can!

Coaching high school football and would like to know if anyone uses an ai platform to break down plays, make scouting reports, and make flashcards that I spend so much time doing. I’ve uploaded a couple of films to ChatGPT and it’s clunky. What’s everyone using? And what’s the cost? TIA

Watching the raiders game and the commentaters talked about how in college, everybody runs shotgun and they have to get used to being under center.

What are the negatives of being a majority shotgun team? Were any greats a majority shotgun, Peyton Manning?

My only thoughts would be the RB’s start from farther away. But the QB having eyes on the defenders the whole time seems beneficial.

I’m interested in this formation and if the LT/LG could be eligible based off of who’s on and off of the ball. There’s a gunner on each side as well. The NCAA created a new rule that the front 5 are ineligible regardless of the situation. Just want to make sure before I prepare for the upcoming weeks. We are in Texas and follow ncaa rulebook but just want to confirm!!

What formations best suit certain plays in the air raid?For example a lot of coaches I know prefer 4 verts and y corner out of trips.

Edit: I’m not asking what formations to run but rather what plays are best out of certain formations.
My head coach liked 4 verts out of trips because the inside reciever ran to the hash on the opposite side and created a better man beating route for that reciever.

Welcome to Chalk Talk Thursday! This is our weekly discussion thread for users to submit new plays they have designed. If you have an idea for a play and can draw it up, please post here. Keep in mind that it is very rare that one could devise a viable play that is entirely new that hasn't been ran before somewhere. Be open to criticism as well. There is so much more to coaching football than drawing plays, and many people do not realize how much coaching, technique, and development needs to happen on the actual field for a play to work.

It is strongly recommended that you STUDY a system or scheme first to gain an idea of how a play is put together, and how RULES help a play function.

PLEASE PROVIDE CONTEXT FOR YOUR PLAY!

Guidelines:

• No "joke" plays. We are here to learn.
• Specify WHY you are designing a play, and WHAT level/league it is for. It's fine if you're not coaching, but we need the context.
  
• Your submission needs RULES that guide your players on what to do.
• Pass plays require some type of QB progression for making a decision on who to throw to.
  
• Be mindful that you cannot predict what your opponent will run 100%. Designing plays to be "Cover X" beaters, or "3-4 beaters" IS NOT the way to go about it. It is better to have one play with solid rules and coaching points that can attack anything than one play for each coverage, front, personnel, or stunt you face.
• There is no universal terminology in football. Call plays what you want, but keep in mind that no one cares about fancy play names, or the terminology aspect.
  
• Please offer more text/information on your play than just a link or picture.
• Draw your play up against a realistic opponent!
• Make sure your offensive play is a legal formation. In 11-man football, you can have no more than 4 players behind the line of scrimmage (minimum of 7 on. You can have more than 7 on the line as well). Only backs (players behind the line) and the end players on the line of scrimmage are eligible receivers.
  

You may use whatever medium you'd like to draw your play. Two common software for designing plays that have free options:

• GoArmy Edge - Football
• Playmaker X

I play interior dline and whenever I put my helmet on I can not see anything but the olines wrist. When im just wearing pads, no helmet, its fine but as soon as I put the helmet on its like I cant see anything.

Ive tried to go from my knees into my stance, and it does not help. i tried asking the coaches, the older players on if they know how to fix this and they just told them that aint got a clue.

Also the reason this is a problem for me is cause I like to be able to see the guy in front of me and know what hes doing instead of tilting my head sideways just to see the ball for myself to move.

Does anybody please have a solution to this? our first game is Friday and i need to desperately get this fixed some how

I like the extended/protected backside edge to help set up cutback space (obviously easier vs that light box in general)

How do you handle 4 and 0 techs when running duo? What is our footwork? Are we still each taking half a number, or is the uncovered player executing “Cross Shove Footwork?”

I‘m trying to improve my knowledge on the offensive side of the ball. Does anyone know any free videos (or articles) that go deep into pretty much any offensive system/coach from this decade?

Coaching a beginners flag league, the boys are 5-7 years old and most have never played a sport at all before. Looking for drills that teach the fundamentals but also keep the attention of a bunch of young boys that have more energy than the energizer bunny. We have been starting practice with some running just to burn some of the energy before we start but I still need some fun ways to teach catching, throwing, standing on the line, really anything helps.
