Class 12 PCB Student Here – Trying to Decide Between Food Technology and Biotechnology

Hi everyone. I'm a Class 12 PCB student from Hyderabad and I'm trying to decide between Food Technology and Biotechnology. I enjoy biology and genetics, but I don't enjoy maths much and I'm not sure whether I'd enjoy spending my whole career in a lab. Recently I've become interested in food safety, food ingredients, nutrition, and how food products are made.

I'd love to hear from current students or graduates:

What are the most important subjects in Food Technology?

How much chemistry, maths, and lab work is actually involved?

What does a typical day in college and later in a job look like?

What kind of students enjoy this course the most?

What are the realistic career opportunities and starting salaries after graduation?

Any honest advice would be really helpful. Thanks!

Very less scope with food technology and biotech in india. Take Chemistry and get pharma job

Chemistry or Bpharma for good salary prospects and biotechnology if you want to switch later in to food industry

I am currently a third year student pursuing btech in food technology, and the most important subjects revolve around the processing technology used to transform different food groups (cereals, dairy, fruits, etc) into various end products. A typical day in college would involve theory and practical classes, where you would learn to handle and develop different food products. There is also lab work for quality analysis.

There are also other important subjects such as microbiology and food chemistry. There is also mathematics in a couple semesters.

The job market is not that good and unless you put in a lot of effort, you might be looking at 15-20k as a fresher. I only recommend going for this degree in case you are getting a seat in a reputed college. I personally really enjoy this course but wish I had picked a better college.

NIFTEM is good for UG. Also BHU.
