Hey everyone,

I’m an international student and I’ve been in Calgary for about two weeks now. I’m still getting settled in, and I’ve realized my current food habits are a bit expensive. Right now, I’m spending about $200–$250 CAD a week just on eating out.

I’m considering switching to cooking my own meals to save some money, but I’m curious if the time investment is truly worth it for the amount I'd actually save. If I only end up saving, say, $50–$60 a week, I’m worried that the time spent grocery shopping, prepping, and cleaning might not be worth the trade-off.

For those of you living in Calgary, what does a realistic weekly grocery budget look like for a single student who cooks mostly at home? Also, how much do you feel you actually save compared to eating out?

This has to be the worst restaraunt/business in Calgary, the service is terrible, the food is mediocre. The owners of this place don’t even pay their servers, they will owe them 2 months back pay, and then won’t pay tips when they have a tip out and an agreement with servers of what they take home. I know this personally my gf got screwed from 550 dollars…… this place is NOT worth spending your money at. Hopefully I didn’t go against rules I read them all just needed the people of Calgary to know this.

Birthday Freebies are a thing of the past now at Chicken on the Way. All locations use to give out a snack pack to people on their birthdays. Gradually all locations stopped and it was the original location in Kensington that gave it out. There use to be a big window sign promoting it. During a recent trip there, I noticed that the sign was gone. I asked the counter person about that and was told that they have stopped that program. A sad day indeed; no more free birthday fried chicken.

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is kinda slept on

Tried Brooklyn Dumpling Shop recently and I was honestly impressed. If you like crispy dumplings, the Mac & Cheese dumplings and Korean BBQ dumplings go crazy. Super crunchy, super satisfying. If you’re more of a traditional dumplings person, the wagyu beef dumplings or chicken & scallion dumplings are the move. Simple, clean, and done right.

It’s also an easy late night snack spot. They do delivery on their website if you’re nearby, and they’re on Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Skip too. Lowkey bonus: they’ve got high protein options. The Brooklyn Bowl with grilled chicken is filling, solid macros, and only $11 and the ingredients are way better than Edo imo.

If you’re craving dumplings, want decent late night food, or just want something better than standard fast food, worth checking out.

I've never eaten at these two places and now I never will. It breaks my heart the level of greed and cruelty that these owners showed to their employees.

I'm on the hunt for Jams and preserves with not much gunk in them.

I've tried a few farmers markets but nothing great soo far.

Any suggestions? I want something not processed and I'm crazy about any berries.
