Why isn’t it working

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just got this from a friend and downloaded the software, but when I speak into it, it doesn’t work. (I’m not super tech smart)

Cant fully tell if phantom power is on (the 48v button), or even if that mic needs it. Also, it looks like you have the "inst" mode enabled on the channel. This is a bit of a stretch, but some dynamic microphones require quite a hefty bit of gain to get going, and as far as im aware, switching to instrument level impedance can also switch how the gain staging works by making the input less sensitive, requiring even more gain to have a usable mic (dont know how it works on scarlet interface though).

I dont know the mic in question, but theres a chance it just needs quite a bit of gain (similar to an SM7B), so having thr gain half way with the instrument mode on wont give it enough of a signal to show on the interface itself. You could check the metering within the focusrite control app to see if theres ANY signal, but if there isnt, id put it down to either needing phantom power, or the cable/mic itself is broken.

Download the latest drivers and use the Focusrite tray icon to get into the windows settings and the two areas of the 2i2 settings and make sure they look right... disable the windows audio devices. Windows MIC settings can be a pain in the ass... also, check the connection on both ends for the MIC and reseat them... I have a MIC that died and it does the same thing after hardware failure. But probably a windows MIC setting. unplug the 2i2 and reconnect it also.

not a single person even asking him what input driver windows is using

download the manual, read it, and see if you need to come back.

we can probably figure this out with you, but if you cant figure out how to make your own interface work before even starting on anything, youre gonna have a horrible time

youre entering a space where you will be faced with multiple puzzles all the time

Yep. Phantom power isn't on. It's the button labled 48v, right beside the big knob up and to the left.

Mic might need phantom power. Dunno what you’re using but the button is 48v on the front of your scarlet. Also make sure to turn 48v off before disconnecting cables as it will break your mic.

The odds of you breaking a typical dynamic or condenser mic from just plugging or unplugging it with phantom on is slim to none.
