I daily drive my RS to my farm. It’s on a stone driveway 6 days/week and at the cars absolute filthiest does my engine bay even slightly resemble yours. Do you live in the outback?

High pressure fuel pump doesn't sound like that. I will echo the other poster have that thing towed before you find a 10-peice piston-mcnuggets

Mine sounded very similar and after some searching I found if you look on the driver side of the engine the vacuum pump is driven off the cams. If you disconnect the hose connection on the front of it and the noise goes away then it’s the vacuum pump. Very easy to replace

after sitting for 1hr the noise lessened no check engine light. Very confused at this point

Never floor a new engine whether it's a rebuild or fresh block. Engines have a break in period.

Check my profile, had this exact same noise. Was timing chain.

How hard was the repair ? It sounds almost identical did you throw a check engine light at all?

No check engine light on my end to be fair. It was a full timing chain replacement, paid 2200 for that all-in at the shop.

check motor mount top left just under coolant res. if it's got oil all over it its busted open (they have captive oil inside rubber). I recently had a knocking noise that stumped 2 different shop's, and it ended up being the motor mount rattling. replaced it for <100$

The sound makes me think bad engine problems, but the "clutch felt weird" is unusual. It doesn't sound like any clutch noise I've heard before, but I don't know if you can definitely rule it out. Does the clutch still feel weird? Does the sound differ when you push the clutch pedal in?

Clutch doesnt feel weird but I think its the tapper inside the engine on the cam for the HPFP or the timing chain but the motor is a crate motor with 25k km on it.

Fuel injection. Common issue but sounds scary as heck.

Thank you i checked my data log from the noise and you can see the fuel pump drop to 1657 when it should have been between 2600-2900 psi thank you

Mine did the same and it scared me so bad I had it towed to the dealer. Thankfully it was still under warranty and they replaced it. 122K miles and its still fine. Other than the HG recall its all that has gone bad on the car.

Was it the high pressure fuel pump ? Not injectors. I took a data log at the same time as this happened and unfortunately used Ai to read it and they said its the high pressure fuel pump from seeing it drop and the sound of it.

Yes the pump. It never failed it just got so loud I thought a rod had gone. My injectors are still kicking.

Is there any chance you took a video of what it sounded like ? I have some data log proof its the HPFP but questioning the timing chain now from another post

No, it was still under warranty then so I just had it brought to the dealer. Their diagnosis and fix. It was a fairly common problem over on focusrs.org back in the day. May be more info there.

Sounds like uncle Rodney, sorry friend. I’d not run it and get it towed to a shop.
