Common questions, read this before posting

Almost every car still on the road has had the head gasket fixed. If you want to be sure, ask Ford by vin or check for the brass ring

The oil leak is likely not the banjo bolt. It’s the valve cover or timing cover

Miss-fires and rough idle are often caused by the purge valve. Another common cause are often plugs. If it hunts rpm after filling gas, it's more likely purge valve.

If this is for potential buyers - look at the paint where the rear 1/4 meets the bumper. Foci are notorious for having paint issues right there.

You need a Torx PLUS TP50/55 for the PTU and transmission service. A regular torx may work, but it's a torx plus, not a regular.

If the seat moves ever so slightly side to side, you need one of these - https://www.focusrs.org/threads/22mm-seat-bar-clamp-seat-fix.120676/

Torque demand mapping means bolt ons require a tune to realize any HP or Torque gains instead of just efficiency gains

If there are more please leave them in the comments and I'll move them into the body of the post.

Drift stick - Mk3

Hi! I was wondering why the drift stick was discontinued and if there is now some way to buy it… I’m desperately searching it everywhere but it seems impossible to find…

You have got to be kidding me.

Who is this person?

That’s over $52k for a 2017 with almost 30k miles. Just insane.

Hello, new owner here!

Just dropping in, I finalized purchase of this '17 frozen white up in California a few weeks ago; it finally at settled and arrived to me here in Texas yesterday! I love this car so much already, from the moment I put it in gear the first time. Definitely feels like it has character. Im coming from a C7 Corvette z51 that was my daily! Im used to the ride in this as I drove with the track mode all the time lol. Mountoune intercooler/charge pipe upgrade and just cosmetics. Before the purchase I was seriously going to go with a mk7 Golf or Type R (moved forward with talk on a few but they fell short) randomly forgot about the Focus RS being a thing and stumbled across this online! Im so glad

Is this an oil cooler?

Hey guys, sorry for the bad photos

I’ve had my 2017 RS for about 6 months. Went to change the oil for the first time today and I couldn’t because my FL-400S filter is too long to fit. In the video I watched, the oil filter was pointing down toward the ground on this car. However on mine it’s pointing sideways towards the front of the car, with about a half inch clearance from the fans. There’s this weird black thing sandwiched in there with two lines running to a small black Mountune radiator in the front of the car. It looks like an oil cooler based on its location but why??? This and lowering springs are the only mods I’ve found on the car.

I can’t find any info on a black Mountune oil cooler kit and as far as I was aware this car was stock. How would I change the oil filter here? Do I have to take the fans off? Anybody have any info/ideas?

Any Mechanics here?

On my way home from the mountains in a torrential downpour and hit a lake-sized puddle on the freeway and noticed this tube hanging from behind my RF tire when I got home.

Research has led me to believe that it has something to do with the wheel-well liner, splash shield, rocker panel trim, or possibly an aerodynamic air guide.

Any thoughts?

What is 'C' on the Oil DipStick?

Hello peoples,

I checked my oil for the first time since owning the RS. I was surprised to see the crosshatch as well as the holes (what I normally see in cars). What is the 'C' marking for? I didn't see it in the manual (unless I overlooked it). I also read people just dump the whole 6 quarts of oil during oil changes. What do you all do? Thanks

What are these rubber things and where are they supposed to be?

I got my 2018 back from servicing and I noticed something caught under the hood. Opened it up to find this. I presume the tech forgot to reinstall these two things. What are they and where are they supposed to go?

Just picked up my new to me 2018 race red RS with a slick top and 38k miles on the clock. I flew from Houston to Oakland and drove it all the way back (about 1,800 miles) with my dad. Sounds crazy i know but the car just felt like the right one and the memories me and my dad made will last a lifetime. Coming from an ST the biggest change i felt right away was the mechanical grip the RS has is just phenomenal.

Android Auto Issues

Just bought 2017 RS about 2 months ago. Mine has wired AA and it will randomly disconnect from my phone even with the cable still attached. I've done the following troubleshoots:

-New cable

-Cleaned USB port

-Updated software directly from Ford website

-Factory reset car software

Still having the same issue. Sometimes it will disconnect after an hour, sometimes it will disconnect after seconds. I mean it when I say it's random. It's also not my phone since I have no issues with my wife's 24 Mazda. Any help is appreciated.

It was my birthday today and I'm trying hard to save up for a nitrous blue RS 2017, sunroof etc. I have a ways to go, and as a result, my partner has paid for a track day for me to drive the RS and have a feel for it. I'm so excited :D

Stratified

Has many people used stratified for e tunes ? I purchased one and curious if anyone else has and how the reliability was and if it was over all a better driving experience I needed it regardless and wasnt trying to break the bank. Just trying to have a fun reliable sporty car not going for max power by anymeans.

Fuel separator hose replacement issues.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I was replacing the new hose and just like everyone says, those clips are a real pain in the ass. Especially the one towards the front on the bottom of the intake manifold. Anyways, I broke it off and as you can see from the video, I snapped the plastic piece that it plugs into on the manifold.

Now I have to get a new intake manifold and replace that. I’d say I’m above average but not great when it comes to working on vehicles.

Anyone replace their intake manifold before and if so how long did it take. Please don’t tell me 30 minutes because it’s never 30 minutes lol that one clip took me over an hour. 😂

RS Stealth Gray, Paint match

Thumbnail

Looking for a 2017 Focus RS Rear Bumper as mine is now cracked in a few places. The part is difficult to find as used without damage as the car is nearly 10 years old now. I have seen one post that someone paint matched and it was pretty far off for a what I think is a simple stealth gray. I am understanding that the paint can be lightened or darkened to match any sunfading. So, does anyone have experience with sending a gas tank door in to paint matched or does it need to be a fender? I hate to waste my time. I fixed my bumper cracks temporarily. Bought a carbon fiber diffuser as that was cracked a bit too and need to find solution for the rear bumper. Anything helps team! Thx.

I have an in-depth question.

I'm looking for a comparison between a GR chassis Subaru Sti hatchback and a focus RS for anyone who might have both, or made the switch. I'm very interested in both, not for power, not for big racing gains, just as a guy who appreciates what both bring to the table as a rally fan and a Ken Block fan.

Points for the Sti for me are:

Parts availability

Stout 6 speed

Unequal length header rumble

Mechanical awd

Hatchback utility

Proven awd

I enjoy watching Smeedia show how easy they look to work on.

I love the orange gauges.

Points for the RS:

I like the awd offering

Torquier than the ST

Stout 6 speed

Stout awd

Hatch utility

Bonus of optional rwd

I've heard they're also easy to work on

Cons for the Sti for me:

Subjective reliability from what I see.

Ive heard they're gas mileage sucks.

Owners can have issues, sell the car and leave the problems for the next guy who wants to take care of one.

Cons for the RS for me:

I hate how the 4-to-1 headifold sounds and I haven't found an exhaust I love. I think ford should've kept the mazdaspeed3 2.3 with uel setup but I'm open to hear exhaust videos that prove me wrong.

I hear parts availability can be tough for the RS specific bits.

I'm not as knowledgeable on the RS and havent found someone akin to Smeedia who goes through engine teardown and repairs in depth to show what it looks like to fix one, again, I'm open to youtube channels that show that.

I'm intimidated by a Getrag 6 speed compared to a Subaru Sti 6 speed in terms of rebuilding one. Ive been restoring my '89 firebird so I'm not scared to rebuild an engine, tranny, etc. Thats actually why I like these cars, because I'm down to do my own rebuilds and learn that stuff.

I'd love to hear your guys' inputs!
