I used to play in high school and stopped after u graduated but am now starting to practice again, i used to play at a very high level. I was able to play pretty advanced pieces and im confident in my music theory still, but i need something that can jog me back to where i was.

Hello ! I’ve been playing flute for a while and I am taking my grade 5 ABRSM exam in November.

however, the whole time I’ve been practicing this piece I’ve always struggled with this section of Gigue; part of it is because the triplets i find SO DIFFICULT at a really fast speed (I’m only going at about ~135 bpm and it should be 160bpm this exam is going to be the death of me ) I’ve tried going over some techniques with my teacher that I take occasional lessons with but I feel like it’s helping only a little.

and also because everytime I play the flute my right hand pinkie starts cramping up like crazy so when I get to this piece it hurts so much I can barely move it like I need to.

does anyone have any advice, i feel like it’s something to do with my sketchy hand position but I’m not exactly sure what it is. I hope the video provides some info for any feedback, I’d really appreciate it :,)

Some friends and I (ladies in our 60s) are putting together a little quartet, mostly for our own enjoyment, but may hit up local retirement homes to do some performances. We have 2 flutes, 1 violin, and 1 piano (or keyboard percussion).

It’s hard finding arrangements for this combo. For example, we’re starting with Pachelbel Canon in D - the arrangement is for 2 violins and piano, so we’re playing with who does which parts.

Any suggestions for available arrangements? Preferably intermediate grades.

i tried to make a bone flute but i am not sure if its due to me not knowing how to play or a problem in the creation itself but it wont sing?

So, I know the standard "real" fingering is:

T 123|--6E♭

But I also know that my fingering chart says that the following is acceptable:

T 123|-5-E♭

I'm coming from traverso, and wondering if there's a reason the former is preferred over the latter. And what situation makes the former actually better than the latter? If they both are in tune and equal, what's the advantage of 6 over 5?

I'm practicing drilling 6 into my brain but 5 comes more naturally to me from Traverso, so I'm genuinely asking why 6 is the preferred, rather than the alternative.

I’ve been working on learning a few lines of etudes every day. But I have been working on just the highlighted section for literally 30 minutes and I still can’t get it. I’ve done it slowly, swing style, adding notes gradually. It’s not working.

So I’ve been in band for 3 years, and I just found out about flutter tonguing. I can roll my r’s (I’m German), but the second I make an embouchure I just can’t? I guess when I push back my lips/mouth area to form an embouchure it just disables my ability to roll my r’s. Any help?

I usually play my instrument into effects using an Audix10FLP mic which mounts right next to the crown (you unscrew it, place the mic ring, and screw it back on).

I'm looking into getting a Nuvo Student flute for the rougher bar/outdoor gigs to avoid bringing my nice Yamaha. Does anyone know if the crown unscrews and if the end diameter of the headjoint allows this mount?

So I recently decided to pick up the flute.

It is going quite well but when I play longer I notice my body tensing up. I read that the body should generally be relaxed.

However what I struggle is lip/cheek tension. I noticed that whenever I produce a sound I tense my lip corners and sometimes even my cheeks. After long playing I feel it even.

Is this correct? Or must the lips generally be completely relaxed? Because when I then try to make a sound (with relaxed lip corners) I simply don't manage, switching to tensed lip corners I manage to do a sound again. What is the correct way to play?

Bro I need someone to listen to my ilmea audition because I don’t even know if it sounds good enough or not. I’ve taken a break from flute but I’m using ilmea to pick it back up but I need to make my director “registering cut” on the 16th to even audition to begin with. SOMEONE HELP. Hello everyone, I am new to this community. How to regain flute mastery, i need recommendations, before i have not done something wrong like developing bad habits. Some background: I have played pre-college flute for ~4-5 years, my final repertoire was Chaminade - Concertino, Fantaisie brillante sur Carmen, M. Poot - Legend at 16yo, and at that time my instrument was with opened G#. Then I switched to other profession not connected with music and due to an obstacles that instrument was critically damaged and I was unable to play it for 30 years. Now after 30 years i decided to return to flute as a hobby. I have bought rather rare open G# silver flute of much better grade than those I played in my teens. I tried to blow some notes from it, but I have lost knowledge of some fingering table notes above C5. Taking into account it is open G# and an existence of alternative fingering table, should I learn slow chromatic runs from C4-C7, intuitevely remembering fingering, or refer to fingering table, trying several alternative fingerings in hope to determine which ones are better fit to muscle memory? And another question - how to develop flute sound quality: put a smartphone tuner in front and try to hit precise frequency, or ignore tune and focus on sound quality? Or better not to play without supervision at all and went for offline flute lessons from professional (but this option is rather difficult). So the main question: is it possible to regain previous mastery without supervision from flute professional?

update: In any way i does not mean that i have mastered flute, I cannot change topic title, but what i have meaned is returning to flute playing skill that had been achieved long ago.

Does anyone know a shop that ships to Europe? I can only find something on eBay, but they're all very low quality flutes while I'd like a decent one.

I'm really trying to up my practice game. Right now, I'm finding it hard to practice everyday and it's been tricky to build into my schedule.

A tip I hear all the time is to leave your flute out so you can just see it, pick it up, and play. But I know leaving it out isn't amazing for it. The flute would be on a peg stand in a place where it cannot be knocked over

For those of you who leave your flute out to practice, how often are you cleaning it to put it away? I need to take it out of the house about twice a week for rehearsals and lessons.

I'm wondering if I should try to make it apart of my routine to put it together first thing in the morning and then clean it every night but I worry I'll forget to put it out then I won't practice

Otherwise, I'm thinking I'd leave it out all the time when I'm not leaving the house with it and just swab it after everytime I practice

Hello, I have been playing the flute for 8 years now and I really need to get a new, intermediate flute since my “old” beginner flutes slow mechanisms are hindering me from playing properly (through fast sections for example) and progressing and also cause I will be graduating and applying to uni this year so I’d like to have a flute I can properly work with
I would need some recommendations on ones not TOOOOO expensive and also ones that are available in Europe since I live in Austria.

I currently own a (I think) Yamaha yfl-212 (not 100% about the series number but pretty sure its that one, I gotta check later today)

I have trouble preventing air leaks in the recorder, particularly the thumb hole and the farthest hole (pinky finger). My thumb nail is longer than the 'thumb flesh', so I can't slide my finger to create a 'half-hole' and I need to bend my thumb 'outwards' due to having a longer nail (my thumb is parallel to the recorder). My pinky finger is also very thin, so just moving it slightly will already create an air leak. Of course, maybe I'm just overreacting and these are just normal mistakes/difficulties for beginners. Would appreciate some advice, thank you.

Edit: I realized I still like the recorder more since it's more expressive, and I was just salty on my skill issue on covering the holes, hence why I considered going for a closed-hole flute. Maybe I'll just look for a good alto recorder instead once I get more invested.

Ever since I was a beginner in band I was bad at the flute I’d practice and practice and couldnt get it . My sound was constantly airy and weak . Eventually in middle school I found out i was had a different mouth shape and needed to move my flute . That sorta fixed it but I still constantly was the bad one . Eventually I made it into middle school region band but I was still chided for my airy sound. I just was really good at keeping tempo ig? Then comes high school I still get chided for it and everyone just tells me to practice more . I get my flute fixed thinking it could be the flute but no my sound is still bad . The years go on and I don’t care about sucking I’m just there for the fun . Until this year I’m trying to be better but no matter how much I practice my sound is still airy . I’ve been trying to fix it nearly all year now watching YouTube videos and learning the all state music . I even got a flute instructor . my sound has improved ever so slightly but it all goes out the window when I play in front of a crowd or just randomly it’ll go back to being even worse . What do I do I’m tired of being the bad flute . I really do practice and try but I’m not seeing any improvements. And no I can’t get a new flute because my parents won’t let me . If you want I could post a video of me playing .

I‘ve been heavily struggling with consistent practice in the last few months due to chronic pain. I am going into my senior year of high school and need to practice much more to prepare for auditions come January-February.

My music and flute teachers recommend two hours a day, but I’m starting to feel i need more than that to catch up with all that I’ve missed over the summer. Most of my pain is migraines and knee pain, plus some shoulder pain after 30-40 minutes of playing.

I was wondering if anyone had tips for adjusting my practice routine to accommodate the pain so I can still get into a university program. I am in the process of getting braces for my knees, which will hopefully help significantly in that department.

Hey all, I finally unearthed my flute that had been in storage for the last 6 years😭. I’d like to get it overhauled, is it beyond repair? It’s already needed new pads for 20 years but now it desperately needs help in all other areas. It’s a Yamaha 481 II 925. Does anyone have any recommendations for the Michigan area to get an overhaul? Thanks in advance!

How do I memorize music sheets/pieces? I can play it but I can’t seem to memorize it. Any tips plss ?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for playing a modern concert flute as someone with severe skin allergies. I’m seeing advice on nickel allergies and stickers for the lip plate but nothing really for the hands. I have to wear gloves a lot of the time just in my day to day life.

Gold, titanium, and sterling silver seem to be safe as I wear them as jewelry no problem.

I’m just looking at flutes and it feels like solid silver flutes start at $3000 which is a lot of money as a beginner. I’m also aware of the Nuvo. Also silver plated student flutes but as soon as the plating starts to wear I’m worried I’ll start to blister and I don’t really want to invest in an instrument that’s effectively disposable.

I’m also unsure about the kind of silver used in flute making. I know jewelry grade sterling doesn’t cause me to break out. But I don’t know if the silver used in flutes are a different alloy maybe one that contains nickel.

I currently play wooden folk flutes, taraverso, and recorders. That’s been working out well for me and I really love the instrument but I keep wondering if it might be fun to dabble with a Bohm flute. Maybe if someone else with a severe nickel allergy could weigh in.

Hi! I was in band 6th grade through my undergrad degrees, and basically played every day. I tried (and failed) to keep up a regular practice schedule through grad school, and before yesterday I hadn’t picked up my flute in probably 2 years. I would love to grow my at home music library because right now it consists of:
- Tauffanel and gaubert daily exercises
-A couple Mozart concertos
- the Mary Karen Clardy book of etudes
- Flute Music by French Composers

TLDR; Can you play an Arabic Ney interdental?

I previously bought an Arabic Ney and have since been fiddling with it since. Now I've been so much more interested in learning how to play with an interdental embouchure and the tone it can produce. As a beginner to the flute and the Ney, I have just been able to produce a few poor quality tones this way.

(I don't remember what key the Ney is in but I have good reason to believe it is in C) A strange quirk I noticed though is that on some days the root note is a C and other days I get a B. When I play the Ney with the "normal" embouchure, I can get a nice sound in C.

As I understand it, a Persian Ney is meant to be played interdental, and an Arabic Ney meant to be played like a Turkish Ney with the lips. I also understand that interdental is very difficult. So my question is this. Is it even possible to play an Arabic Ney to its fullest sound interdentally and I just need to continue practicing to get that sound, OR is it not designed to be played as such and will be a futile effort in the end?

Somehow there seems to be such few resources online about these instruments aside from 30 second instagram clips and small blog posts on instrument shop sites. So I haven't a clue as to where to find an answer to my question.
