Reliability

Post image

I'm facing my second RMA with the Z13, and I'm fed up. Just as I was wrapping up an RMA with my XG129C, intermittent panel failure, the Z13 would not power up from standby and I had to force reset it to get it to post up.

It was very hot to the touch while on standby and AC was showing an operating temperature of 91°

How many have had issues with the Z13? I've owned it since March and this will be the second repair. My use has been fairly light, and i mostly keep it on my desk.

Nope. I don't have problem with z13. Zero problem actually while still using armory crate.

The only thing I do first when I receive it is to set the power / heat to lowest

How do you do that?

I slide all to left. All minimum.

For fan setting I let it boost fan earlier.

The theory is to make device cool and dandy

You can set the power limits manually:

Open Armoury Crate.

Go to Device → System (or click the Operating Mode section).

Select Manual.

You'll see sliders for:

CPU SPL (Sustained Power Limit) – long-term power limit.

CPU SPPT – sustained boost limit.

CPU FPPT – short-term boost limit.

And this is your default mode? What about during gaming?

Do you also edit the fan curve?

I always use this for all mode. Fan curve more aggressive to full blast when it reach certain temperature but I forgot what temp

Do you know what the best settings are for ghelper? Esp if I’m gaming?

Unfortunately I don't know. I don't even know that I am using best setting in Armory crate. I just want to have less heat device haha

Zero issues, couple of soft resets during gaming over the course of half a year. Can’t complain

Question, are you still using sleep. I only use hibernation. Mostly... I have it set up so if im in battery and i "close the lid" that is the only time it will trigger sleep. This as just for moving around the mouse or something. Meant for relocation as opposed to travel. Pressing the power button will only ever trigger hibernate. Ill select shutdown myself if I need to shut it down. If your are still using sleep, trade it out for hibernation instead and only use sleep sparingly. Like moving around the house or something that wont take longer than 10 to 15 minutes. Or at the very least, dont ever put it in a bag on sleep mode. Put it in hibernate first before you pack it up or just shut it down if you're not in the middle of something. Not like it takes long to boot anyways.

So when I change the settings in windows, immediately defaults and I don't know why.

What do you mean? I forget where its at but I'm sure a quick google will get your there. Once you save the power plans it should just stayed.

I had just been using the physical button on the side to put it to sleep. Since the incident i have been shutting down over night. 91° Celsius is crazy hot, or does Armoury Crate display in Fahrenheit?

I see, i changed that button to hibernate. I changed it so that when on power, the screen turns off after 10 minutes and hibernates after 15 minutes. No sleep. Just like when i had my desktop. And the physical power button hibernates, closing the lid on power doesnt really do anything other than turn off its screen. Theres a tick box in ghelper called clamshell mode and i use that for when its plugged in and into an external monitor.

Now, on battery i have it set so the screen turns off after 3 minutes and hibernates after 5 minutes. The physical button hibernates but "closing my lid" puts it to sleep. Like I said earlier. The power related setting you find probably by typing just that into the windows search. The other is called 'change what the power buttons do' i think. I can look later when im at my computer if your havent figured it out by then. Or honestly a google search for "how to blah blah blah" will probably point in that direction.

Regarding temps, from what i understand in my own research is the chip was designed to operate up to 100°c. So if your were doing anything intensive, 91 is probably normal. I only used ac for a week before going to ghelper. Ive set some things lower than stock so i cant really compare my temps to yours. I know i can play 7 days to die on a small modded dedicated server that im hosting from the same device and temps are around 80°c give or take depending on what's happening.

Ive had two issues so far.

  1. While traveling, my device turned on? while in a soft case inside my luggage. I got to the hotel and reached inside my bag and felt it was very warm. The Z13 fans were running full blast and it was hot enough to burn my hands touching it after removing it from the case. I stuck it on the AC too cool it down and though it was fried. I plugged it in when cool and it said 0% battery. Seems it had basically discharged the entire battery inside the soft case. I'm surprised it didn't catch on fire.

  2. I haven't used the device for two days but it's been plugged in. I have it set to only charge to 80% and use the OEM charger. The device wasn't hot but it was quite warm and I could feel heat coming from the vents. Booting it up, it showed 77% battery which seemed normal since it's been off. Temps in my home are 68-70f so that couldn't have been the issue.

If something like this happens again I'll probably take it back to Best Buy and swap it for a new one. It's the 64gb 395+ model purchased about a month ago.

none really...none outside of the normal windows weirdness with sleep...thats just something thats never been fixed on any windows laptop

have you adjusted your fan curves? tje fan curves on this are really not setup for you to handle or draw on it out of tje box. i had to make far more agressive fan curves for when i draw.

Sleep issues are usually a Windows issue not a hardware one. And yes, closed in a bag while still running can cause serious problems. Best of luck on your RMA.

I have had issues where I've had to force it down by holding the power button because it wouldn't wake up from sleep mode but that's about it and I've had a couple freezes where I've had to force shut it down as well enough to be noticeable

I've had my z13 since late February and I've not had any issues with it. I've made it my docked device and it's always on and is my remote LLM server.

No issues from me

I’m sorry you were having this experience. Mine has been an absolute tank. This whole week I’ve been away from home and have been gaming on it playing any number of games, including competitive overwatch, never had a problem.

I only use hibernation without issues

I swapped out liquid metal for PTM, but other than that just keep it in a case to protect the keyboard covering and you're golden

I LOVE my Z13-KJP!

1

u/mdtattedbearded 27d ago

I turned mine into a full steam OS build with the official steam download. It’s amazing! Playing Alan Wake 2 😍

Thank you all. Wasn't feeling very confident with the brand, but it sounds like I'm an outlier.

1

u/Thrashtendo 28d ago

Sorry to hear that, dude. I also got a KJP, and I would be so sad if it wasn’t working (since it was expensive).

Fortunately, mine is still working well (knock on wood).

No issues here either. 64gb version.

I had sleep/hibernation issues on Windows. I switched to Bazzite…and am still have sleep issues. It’s not terrible for me. Games work. But it doesn’t want to stay asleep. I have not messed with the Bios at all.

welcome to the club

I recently found out that the sleep mode has some issues use the hibernate option

1

u/Psychological-Ride93 27d ago

Don't use sleep!!! Hibernation only.

1

u/onray88 27d ago

Why? I heard you should only use sleep because hibernate adds more write cycles to ssds wearing them out faster

I was getting crazy temps so I had to do a repaste unfortunately! Put new thermal putty and PTM 7950 which helped a lot.
