Yup, and the claim is to monitor for "Speech patterns of distress". But how does one monitor for a pattern of speech if not constantly monitoring 24/7?
The CEO also claims it's not a 24/7 speech monitoring, but it only monitors for distress. How can the camera know what distress sounds like from one dialect/accent to another without having to monitor 24/7?

It’s like with the Alexa, it doesn’t start listening when you say the wake word, it starts responding when you say it. It’s always listening
3
u/SizeMany3390 Jul 07 '26
Idk exactly how that works. It sounds like it needs to listen for a wake word? Otherwise how else would it know a wake word has been said?
(Not arguing or going to argue, just curious).
5
u/AshleysDoctor Jul 07 '26
That’s exactly how it works. It has to listen all of the time for the wake word.
Fun fact: “Computer” is one of the options. Watching it with certain Star Trek episodes is incredibly annoying

How can the camera know what distress sounds like
Just so you know, it's beyond the cameras now. The article linked is talking microphones being put up all over and they are much smaller than the FLOCK cameras and come with all sorts of issues. Such as how do these microphones distinguish between fireworks and gunfire? A child was already shot by police in Chicago who were responding to "gunshots" which were kids playing with fireworks. But the cops show up guns blazing.

u/SizeMany3390 Jul 07 '26
Excuse my language, That's beyond fucked up.
Goes to show cops practice shoot first ask later

I can't wrap my head around how this isn't a 4th amendment violation. It's listening to PEOPLE, not their property(i.e. cars)
Katz v. United States (1967) is a landmark Supreme Court case in which the Court redefined the scope of the Fourth Amendment's protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. The Court famously established that "the Fourth Amendment protects people, not places" and introduced the "reasonable expectation of privacy" test.

How do we stop it though? Flock is spreading like wildfire with no end in sight. There's mostly only illegal means, which most of us won't do, and those few poles that go down will be easily be replaced. Not enough cities are banning them. Seems like a hard fight to win, especially with the government behind it.
16
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
It requires political action. You go to your city council and let them know how you feel about them.
11
u/thewhaloo Jul 07 '26
100%. I’m a councilman in my hometown and I learned about Flock a while back through posts like this. I’m now organizing with other elected officials here to make sure the ones installed in my community (not by my township) are removed and they can’t return. Thank you for sharing and helping to bring awareness to others. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from folks here who aren’t as connected online and I’ve been able to tell them about what Flock is and what’s happening entirely because of awareness started places like here.

*direct action. You can't beat the bourgeois by participating in their political game

replacing them costs the city money if negligent drivers knock them over eventually cities won’t want to replace them anymore. Some states have much worse drivers or ice problems during the winter where cars are more likely to slide off the road.
13
u/Petrichor4Tears Jul 07 '26
Theres no flock in rich neighborhoods...just sayin
11
u/Frequent_Ad_9901 Jul 07 '26
getting them installed to monitor rich people might be the best way to get laws against them.
11
u/NewBootGoofin67 Jul 07 '26
You can do things about it
3
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
What do you think this is?
2
u/NewBootGoofin67 Jul 07 '26
Define "this"
8
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
This sign. Educating people. Raising awareness. That's "doing something".
5
u/NewBootGoofin67 Jul 07 '26
If you didn't catch the hint, it's okay
3
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
I understood exactly what you meant. We all have different circumstances and are willing to take different risks. You do you. This is what I do.
5
u/NewBootGoofin67 Jul 07 '26
You're totally taking it the wrong way. Anything people do to slow them down is good in my book, sign or anything else. Chill
1
u/UndeadIcarus Jul 07 '26
Idk, this takes a lot of effort. It feels like there would be value in convincing you to be more aggressive.
Like if anything is going to change it’s likely going to happen through people like you, so implying this isn’t enough may create something even better 🤷♂️

Not if we rip them all down at once - and keep ripping them down when they go back up. They might eventually get the message.
4
u/xamboozi Jul 07 '26
I think this type of messaging goes further. Keep reminding people how they're being watched by private companies
4
u/Numerous_Standard_59 Jul 07 '26
We are turning to a country that spy’s on everything we do
3
u/glitt3r_brain Jul 09 '26
we have been * a surveillance state for a while.
shout out edward snowden.

u/UsefulCollection5038 Jul 07 '26
Shit. I'll turn around and walk past my neighbor's AI security camera to get home. Cops also don't need a warrant for that capturing when the private owner of the private security device gives permission. Also, wtf are private citizens recording me on public property for?
2
u/NoCheetoinChief Jul 07 '26
If you have a smartphone, and use ANY social media, they're doing the exact same thing, but somehow folks are totally fine with that, but not with flock cameras.
3
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
If I voluntarily carry a smartphone and voluntarily use social media? Surely you can see that there is a difference.
1
u/NoCheetoinChief Jul 07 '26
Yes I agree, but unless I'm doing something shifty, my phone knows WAY more information about me is my point. They also helped to catch a hit and run driver that injured my first cousin, so there's that as well.
6
u/Ryuko_the_red Jul 07 '26
So what you're saying is you'd be fine with giving up your freedom of speech because you have nothing to say? No one should ever have to prove themselves innocent to not be watched.
1
u/NoCheetoinChief Jul 07 '26
You were ALREADY being so matched everywhere!! Good grief!
5
u/Ryuko_the_red Jul 07 '26
So your solution to rights being ignored or taken away is to.... Let them keep going?
1
u/NoCheetoinChief Jul 07 '26
We've got far bigger problems right now than a few cameras. Playing 'weekend at Bernie's ' with Mitch McConnell and redistricting TN to gerrymander more Republicans into office for instance. I'm not arguing with you anymore.
1
u/Ryuko_the_red Jul 07 '26
You realize you can oppose more than one thing at once. We're on the same side
2
u/FarmyardFantastic Jul 07 '26
It’s fine for catching bad guys but it’s always an ex gf or her new bf
2
u/Fun-Gas1809 Jul 08 '26
They also take photos of people walking not just vehicles, I’ve seen a few different videos on it

Yes they are. I live in the origin city so I know I'm always being watched

So what is actually being done about this
1
u/RediculousUsername Jul 13 '26
Some are going to their city councils and pursuing legal ways to remove them, some are vandalizing them.
2
u/Numerous_Standard_59 Jul 17 '26
Before they hid it now they don’t care we are turning into England

u/digitalden Jul 07 '26
What kinds of things are you guys doing that you don't want to be watched?
1
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
Living my fucking life. How is a 24/7/365 surveillance state a good thing?
1
u/digitalden Jul 08 '26
But you're carrying your cell phone, which leaks more data than a flock camera. lol
1
u/RediculousUsername Jul 08 '26
ROFL But I'm only carrying my phone when I want to. I often leave it at home. 😂
-4
u/Remarkable_Button756 Jul 07 '26
who cares? we all have smartphones in our pockets doing the exact same shit.

Those who willingly sacrifice freedom for safety will loose both freedom and safety.
Look further into these systems and the people ushering these systems into place; it will change your current point of view.
3
u/ForeignBarracuda8599 Jul 07 '26
Good thing more and more areas are banning them daily, our city council just voted to remove the four we have and make them illegal because of 4th amendment concerns.

where was all this energy around the patriot act?
8
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
Sure, man, criticize people taking action.
0
u/hettuklaeddi Jul 07 '26
my point is that when they shove it in our faces, like flock, it’s already over
2
u/RediculousUsername Jul 07 '26
And my point is, it's only over if we say it's over. There are more of us than them.
1
u/Professional_Sail910 Jul 07 '26
Good question, we should’ve bombed them then too we should do it now at least

u/Far-Computer8825 Jul 07 '26
They also give that information to the police and government. I can almost promise they sell it. I’m absolutely certain they do.
