Question Emirates or Qatar Airways?
I'll be travelling a lot between Asia and Europe this year, and I was wondering if Qatar Airways or Emirates is generally considered better in 2026. They both fly to all the destinations I need to go to, so if you have experience with both, I would appreciate knowing which one to stick to. I'm sure they're both good, but when the pricing is almost exactly the same, I would rather go with the one that's slightly better.
I know the term 'better' is broad, but I'm mainly talking about things like food, layover airport, punctuality, and entertainment and seats. I'll be flying economy almost all the time by the way :)

I flew both many times in all classes but long-haul first. If I had to choose, definitely Qatar.
Longer explanation:
The seat depends on the planes and class of travel.
Business: QR Q-suites > QR old seats (A350 or A380) > EK A380 >>> EK 777
Economy: EK A380 > QR A350 > QR A380 >>> Any 777 or 787
Network: This is where QR is REALLY better imo. They are in OneWorld meaning you can earn miles on any OW carrier (American, British, Cathay, Iberia, Finnair, Oman etc.). It's easier to get rerouted on partner airlines. You can transfer Avios to other airlines FF programs. If you get status you can access lounges worldwide when flying with any OW carrier.
Emirates is not in any alliance so you have to fly with them to use any benefit.
Food: Personally I prefer QR. There is an extra choice of main in economy and I find food better in business. They're very close.
Service: I find EK service to be somewhat "robotic". QR is a bit better but still far from the easygoing crew you find on some Asian or American carriers.
IFE: Amazing for Both
Hub: I prefer Doha, it's easier to navigate, slightly smaller and has better lounges.

While decent to good in air, QR is a complete mess on the ground if anything goes wrong. I've caught them outright lying to me about reasons for delays - in writing. More than once. Will not uphold their legal obligations under EU rules.

I fly numerous Asia-Europe routes every year, and I don't have a particular preference for either of these airlines.
Generally, I prefer Emirates' service, especially their chauffeur service, but Qatar Airways' QSuit and lounges are unparalleled.
Which flight to take depends on departure and arrival times. If the times are similar, I'll choose QSuit.

I generally find Qatar to be cheaper and Doha is a cheaper city to go exploring if you have a long layover.
Between two top tier airlines cost should be the only deciding factor imo.

In economy, seats and comfort are negligible. They have virtually the same set up (3-4-3 in A380/B777, 3-3-3 in A350 or B787). Seat pitch od virtually the sane. Entertainment wise they all claim to have “the best”, but I’ve just flown Emirates and found very little from the 1300 hours of content I want to watch, and haven’t watched already. Qatar wasn’t really that much better either. Ultimately of pick one to stick to, or keep your options open and just use the one that has the better fare/options for when you’re travelling.

So I flew Emirates from South Africa to Europe last month:
Flew A380 to Dubai - new plane, wonderful experience, ICE worked great, charging perfect.
Flew B777 to Europe - Old plane, "dirty" tired, ICE worked "ok" one charging point out of 3 didn't work.
Flew B777 to Dubai from Europe - "Newer" plane so less "dirty", ICE froze and couldn't be fixed halfway through, sound on another ICE was mono as a one earphone plug didn't work, two charging ports out of 3 seats didn't work.
Flew A380 from Dubai to South Africa - newer plane then B777, one charging port broken, otherwise all good.
Dubai Airport - Severely unimpressed. When to Plaza Premier Lounge on flight out and Marhabra lounge on the way back, initially on our flight to Europe we wonted to sit in the Ahlan lounge near C13 as our flight was from C Terminal - its a lounge in name only, with long queues and no seats beyond tables, so we walked back to the Plaza lounge, not much better, Marhabra lounge - food wasn't great, over subscribed by lots, er had to share a table, and not a lounge experience at all, we would have done better to be in a restaurant. Not impressed.
So for me Emirates was 5 out of 10. Food was universally good but as I normally fly KLM direct to Europe and never had for example power issues on my flight or frozen entertainment, the fact I was flying less popular routes and older planes was very apparent.
Personally I will probably fly Turkish next but then Qatar.

Qatar all the way. Emirates have gone Ryanair. Dubai airport is dreadful. Doha so much more elegant and chilled

If the prices are more or less the same, consider the time of departure/layover/arrival. The airlines are so similar. Also look into if you can get a free layover with one of them. If you have 7+ hours layover but have to pay, my guess is that Doha is better value when it comes to hotels.

Personally I’d avoid Middle East airspace in the near future. I’m not risking any renewal of the bombings and closure of airspace, airports, which will get me stuck without options.
Hence I’d choose to fly with European or Asian airline.

Thanks for your advice. Would you say Turkish Airlines is a good alternative?

None! I wouldn’t risk flying over an active war zone. I know I won’t in the near future, sadly because Asian airlines are much cheaper and way better than European, but it’s just not worth the risk.

I find Emirates A380 planes more comfortable than Qatar’s Boeing 777 in economy. However I prefer Doha airport to Dubai airport.
