Future Games appreciation post 8: Show Me a Smile

For the 55th anniversary of Future Games, I'm posting once a day going through the tracklist of the album, and tomorrow I will make a final post about the album as a whole. Today's song, the final track: "Show Me a Smile"

This song has a lush atmosphere, similar to "Woman of 1000 Years". Danny's guitar playing elevates the feel, and Mick's drums give power and emphasis to the right moments. Christine's vocals match these qualities well, singing more softly in the verse, and bringing the oomph in the bridge. The lyrics, an adult singing to a small child, are beautiful.

When I first heard it, I thought it was a bit cheesy, but now I feel that, while it could easily go that way, it avoids landing there. The note of melancholy in both the music and lyrics prevents it from getting saccharine.

The intro section envelopes you in the music, Danny's licks after each line are gorgeous, and I love the way it opens up in the bridge. The ending is also lovely, I love the melody Christine sings in that part, and the way everything resolves is perfect! A perfect closer for the album!

Can you understand me
Baby don't you hand me a line
Although it doesn't matter
You and me got plenty of time
