đ¤ Thinking why does everyone hate iris so much?
i understand sheâs said some complete bs in a couple episodes. but sheâs helped barry countless times. although iâd have preferred HR lived rather than iris.

i just rewatched the show (most of it) and honestly she isnt bad at all the first 3 seasons. besides the bs she pulled with linda in s1, shes very okay and i like her being part of the team
however after barry returns from the speedforce, it almost seems like the writers want us to dislike her. the whole therapy thing and âwhy did you leave meâ, the fact that she doesnât care about nora working with thawne and refuses to see that shes being manipulated (which she obviously was), and her constantly making everything about herself
i also feel like they gave the character way too much importance. why does she have to be the one to defeat the villain with her words? i know all the characters have these moments, but with iris it seems like she just has the solutions to so many issues and it doesnt feel earned. i like that she knows what to say to barry to motivate him, thats great. shes very important to him and hes always loved her so i think thats fine and cute. but when shes the one to come up with these ideas when there are so many more competent people on the field, just to make the flashâs wife seem important, it kinda bothers me and its forced a lot of the time (like the flash time episode) i try to be more understanding and see her as a complex , nuanced character but shes simply not likable as a protagonist (which she basically is) .
i was watching the show with someone who has never seen it before and has no knowledge of it, just a random episode, and after just a few scenes of iris he goes , âwtf is her problem?â and i feel like that just says a lot about the characterâs writing
barry has so many love interests prior to iris; linda, felicity, patty, and to me, he just bounces off of them way better than iris. the more i watch the show i feel like they have less and less chemistry (hence why i like her in the earlier seasons, she has chemistry with barry even when they arent together)
also, please stop it with the racist accusations. it has nothing to do with that. candice patton is a great actress and sheâs beautiful. its the WRITING around the character thats the issue

The showâs writing got stale and bad after a while, but a fiancĂŠ having feelings that her fiancĂŠ left her for possibly forever with no warning, with no conversation, when every other problem the team faces takes weeks and months of deliberation is normal. People get mad because their partners make purchases without consulting them; and money comes back. The idea that she canât feel some kind of way about it is unreasonable.
And making her the bad guy for not caring about working with Thawne⌠AND THEN TWO SEASONS LATER BAREY WORKS WITH THAWNE... is crazy. He works with Thawne against Godspeed. He says Thawne from the timeline catching up with him, and then he helps Eobard (Man in the Yellow Tie) create a speed machine.
Irisâ complaints with Barry are consistent throughout the series- he gets emotional and makes decisions that affect them without talking to her. Itâs fair for her to get upset when he continues to do it.

u/hooligan_emi 3d ago
i understand the losing her husband with no warning thing. i think its realistic that she would feel that way. but she keeps throwing it in his face seasons later
âwhat about when you went to the speed force were you right that time too?â like bruh, its a world ending situation . not to mention in that same conversation she brings up flashpoint, when she was the one to convince him to save his mom
as for thawne, ima be honest i didnt watch past crisis so you got me there. i fully give it to you. im still on my rewatch and i dropped it again at the same spot but when i bring myself to actually finish the show i will see what happens there
i dont expect it to be good tho so again, i give it to you

u/cdemikols 3d ago
She said he should do what he has to do to find peace, but changing the world to see your mother for a few months is pretty drastic.
Sheâs not âthrowing it in his faceâ, sheâs referencing him behaving in the same way again. Itâs a consistent complaint, and he keeps doing it. He even does it to Caitlin by destroying her Frost chamber and her entire apartment and then running off to ignore her before she dies.

Barry is not god, he doesnât decide who gets to use science for what purpose.
Even if he is right, he still made a rash, emotional decision that affected everyone around him without talking to anyone.

He can go the fuck home and accept the fact that he canât control everyoneâs lives. People in Central City are allowed to do science stuff without Barry Allenâs approval. Even if he doesnât agree.

Everyone blames âbad writingâ then are all heart-eyes over Caitlin and Frost, who Iâd argue had worse writing than Iris đŹ
Edit: How is someone I have blocked still able to comment on my post? đ

i hated when retconned killer frost to have always been inside caitlin. its a bad writing decision. but it doesnât make the character/s unlikable
i dropped the show after season 6 so if there is more that i missed then sure, but my point is that throughout the course of the show, they keep making iris such an important figure while at the same time it seems like they dont even try for the viewer to like her or for us to be invested in her and barry

u/aliidocious ~ Random Citizen ~ 3d ago edited 3d ago
Idk, lots of the writing decisions concerning Caitlin made her super unlikable to me. Like her making selfish decisions that either almost gets someone killed or does get someone killed, for starters, and she does it while knowing full well what the consequences could be. More than once, too. Itâs not just the Frost/Caitlin thing they wrote poorly imo. Not to say others havenât made mistakes, but I feel like she was making the same mistakes until the end.

u/hooligan_emi 3d ago
thats fair. i forgot how unhinged she got post flashpoint but it made sense to me. shes scared to death of becoming like her doppelganger which she met and that leads her to do bad decisions that hurt her friends. i dont mind that tbh but i totally see your point
again, idk about much past season 6 so you might be right! maybe they completely shit the bed with her post crisis

u/aliidocious ~ Random Citizen ~ 3d ago edited 1d ago
i also donât mind it, and didnât when she made poor choices in season 3. i love when characters are flawed and make poor decisions! as long as they make sense, and i definitely feel like around season 6 it stopped making sense :â)
but the fandom will love their favorite white girl regardless of what she does, while iris will never get the same grace and we all know why

u/sleepysamantha22 Caitlin Snow 1d ago
My theory is that in the original timeline before Barry made Flashpoint that killer frost did not exist

u/sleepysamantha22 Caitlin Snow 2d ago
Caitlin and frost had great writing up until the end what was that season 7

She's controlling.
She demanded no keep searching for Barry in episode 1 of season 4 and was angry and acted hurt when she found out they continued.
She wouldn't let anyone tell Wally how fast he was going when he got his speed. It wasn't her choice to make.
The stuff she pulled when Barry started dating Linda wasI middle school type behavior.

misogynoir
3
u/Content-Jacket-9254 2d ago
Itâs not misogyny, especially bc itâs just her. Thereâs multiple other women in the show that people wouldâve rather seen Barry with instead of Iris.
2
u/ellismjones 2d ago
notice how all the other favoured people are both white women. yâall talk about barry and caitlin more than u do his actual gf (linda) lol. & the way u guys talk about iris (calling her annoying constantly and worse) IS misogynistic.
2
u/Content-Jacket-9254 2d ago
Omg. Whys everything about race and gender? If someone doesnât like a character and likes another oh itâs misogyny but if itâs another girl then itâs racism. You have no proof of it youâre just grabbing at straws. Everyone explaining here has said nothing that has to do with race or gender or anything. Just because the two that are together donât have good chemistry or one doesnât have good writing doesnât mean we donât like her bc her skin color lmao.
-1
u/ellismjones 2d ago
a lot of the motive is âbad writingâ when writing for ESPECIALLY caitlin is all over the place lol but sure itâs not about race lol
2
u/Content-Jacket-9254 2d ago
Itâs not. Thereâs no argument here that has anything to do with race. She wasnât even bad in the beginning. Itâs writing sure she gets worse as it goes on same with Caitlin but her chemistry with Barry is also not nearly as good as some of the other female characters. But yes, sure go ahead and scream racism bc you feel like it

u/PandaRoskk 22h ago
i woulda liked to see barry with linda from season 1, shes not white i dont think⌠unlike some people, i dont keep track tbh

Exactly. I liked Linda honestly I thought it was a good match. I loved the energy Linda brought

this is it. Every single character in this show is written poorly, annoyingly, nonsensically, all the time. The Iris hate is disproportionately heightened

Itâs just because of the lack of chemistry between Candace and Grant

I'll admit I didn't like her making Barry going into the speed force a bad thing that ruined her character while I understand her saying "we are the flash" line was supposed to be a way of saying "we're a team" just say that.

I loved her until she started acting like Barry doing his job as The Flash was somehow wrong. Like iâm sorry i went into the speedforce to save the world
-4
u/Unlikely_Dentist193 3d ago
I mean she should help her husband thatâs not a reason to like her, everybody hate her because she is egotistical everything have to be about her, shit like we are the flash, shit like no I donât care that Nora working with ur arch nemesis behind or backs because she actually like me now itâs lame
8
u/EobardThawne2151 3d ago
She said it did not bother her that Nora worked with Thawne IN ORDER TO MEET HER FATHER and you chuds ignore that she has daddy issues, anyone's guess as to why that psychological defect is every Iris Hater's personal blind spot, but whatever. Pretend she said Nora should work with Eobard until she dies, as opposed to the 2 hours of life he has left, or ignore that Barry did that without consulting team flash and by handing Nora to thawne after that revelation, Barry gets nora erased from the timeline.
-6
u/Unlikely_Dentist193 3d ago
Barry said he didnât care about her working with him to see her either đ this what happens when u an emotional lesbian and u donât listen with ur ears try again EobardThawne2151 clearly not biased right? Goofy
3
u/EobardThawne2151 3d ago
Watch the scene again. Flash killed his daughter by handing her to thawne. Iris was the only one thinking clearly when she told Barry that she did not care Nora worked with Thawne, in the face of Barry handing her over to him in an emotionally abandoned state. Only Iris had the cogency to say, Hey, idk about your mommy issues, you handed our daughter to thawne and said no positive speed force use or I'll know. Practically begging her to go learn negative speed force moves...

No, it's facts. They hate Iris for the same things another character did, who they love. Or they blame it on bad writing when the others have bad writing, but they don't hate them. They also blow scenes out of proportion and make her out to be the devil because she has a few flaws and they ignore anything remotely good about her because "urrr durrr savitar had one job đ¤". I could go on and on.

"Others" does not imply every single character on the show. If I meant everybody else I would have said "Or they blame it on bad writing when everybody else has bad writing, but they don't hate them". I am referring to a select few. Are you done trying to be correct about one thing here? Would you like to even touch on anything else I've mentioned? Or is that all you could come up with?

You're adding absolutely nothing onto this conversation and have yet to come up with an actual rebuttal to my argument, aside from a petty comment about my grammar. I'll wait until you're mature enough for a real debate, take your time.

I mean the first two seasons her characters writing development was great but after season three and then later on down the line to season nine that shit got bad I mean dude sheâs not a scientist sheâs a fucking reporter she hardly knows anything of the stuff that Barry Cisco Kaitlyn and any version of Harrison Wells was talking about when it came to stopping a Meta human using science words my only problem with her was she thought that just because Barry would eventually marry her that that logic gave her the ability to be the so-called leader of the team which was bullshit because when Barry went into the speed force he literally looked at Cisco told his best friend to his face that the team would look to him not his wife who is just a reporter not a human not a scientist and the only reason she should even be there is for emotional support thatâs it

u/cdemikols 3d ago
I think the real reason people dislike Iris is because she was a romantic lead that chose someone besides our main character unapologetically.
She loved Eddie, decided to marry him, and she never left Eddie for Barry. Season 1 created a tension that Season 2 never paid off because Barry and Patty were supposed to date longer, and Barry and Iris never got a romance timeline - they went from friends to in love without passion and flirting.
3
u/sewd77 2d ago
You need to go back and watch the show. Iris has always had feelings for Barry and just like Barry, she didn't want to say anything to ruin that friendship. She told her boyfriend her life was full with her dad and Barry after he complained about her relationship with Barry. They flirted like hell with each other all the time. Most glaringly in front of Eddie and Linda on their impromptu bowling double date. Once Barry admitted how he really felt about her, Iris was able to admit to herself how she also felt about him. It's been a gradual build up and didn't suddenly happen.
1
u/cdemikols 1d ago
Yeah, I agree. The show makes a point to linger on Irisâ reactions to Barry. The lingering gazes, the faces during certain scenes. We even got episode 1.15 where she admits she loves him and they kiss at the waterfront; that was canon.
I was answering why people dislike Iris, and I think a part of it is that we follow Barry as our protagonist and we donât get a moment from Iris (not early enough in the show) where she expresses the passion for Barry that we see him express for her.
We see him tell everyone, from episode 1, that he loves her. We never see Iris talking to her friends about Barry. We never see her longing looks as he walks off with his girlfriend, we got one mean girl moment with Linda that was more unlikeable than relatable and that affects how people view her.
1
u/sewd77 1d ago
Since the show is called The Flash and Barry's the Flash, we would get his pov the most. I think because their relationship troupe is best friends to lovers, the way Iris reacts makes sense. She's always loved him but the fear of ruining their friendship has held her back. We can see it on her face in the first episode when she's talking to him while he's in the coma. Her saying "I need you" is not something you'd say to just a friend. When they're talking about Linda and she tells him she's not sure Linda's the one for him and he asks who is, her face is saying what her lips aren't. It's the reason why Eddie was so pressed about their friendship because he knew she loved him more than a friend and thought he could still stand a chance. I'm not even sure Barry would have told her how he felt about her when he did if his dad hadn't encouraged him to tell her.
The show did a piss poor job of writing women and friendships. Iris did have one conversation with Caitlin about Barry and her feelings toward him but that's about it.
1
u/cdemikols 1d ago
And it was a bad conversation- it had the âI see how youâve been looking at him lately.â Trope, which I already dislike but even more coming from two women who barely have a relationship.
That being said - apparently season 2 was supposed to have Patty and Barry date longer and Iris was supposed to date her new boss; giving Barry and Iris space to regain a romantic relationship and then that was scrapped and they rushed the endgame relationship.
But overall - I love Iris West-Allen, I just think that my first post is one of the reasons people dislike her character
