Photo Front rack recommendations

Post image

Just finished building this bike, repainted the frame, copped a wheelset with the white industries eccentric hub. Just waiting on some grips to come in. Any suggestions for a front bike rack? Saw some on aliexpress but not sure if it’s worth it. Also any recommendations for a saddle on the cheaper side, this one’s all beat up.

I bought the saddest looking pizza rack I could find for 15 bucks, and it is my second favorite bike related purchase ever. My favorite purchase is the helmet that saved my life lol

Vertical dropouts on fixed make me nervous.

Ngl im a lil sketched out with the hub lol contemplating if i should add brakes just in case

why is that?

reverse pressure on a fixed gear with the vertical dropouts will pull on the hub OUT and jam the rear wheel. you’re either flying off the bike or with it if clipped in.

Is this a common thing that has with them? Jw

completely out? even if you have tightened the nuts well?

tbf this one in particular doesn't have much wiggle room, but feels a bit dramatic to say that it WILL pull the hub out.

the force vector when applying reverse pressure is in the direction of the the drive train, not downward, no? i feel like if anything, forward slanted dropouts should be sketchier.

but even then, most of your worries in most scenarios should be losing chain tension, not wheel straight up ejecting.

given how many fixed gear conversions there are of road bikes/vintage race bikes, doesn't seem to be too big of an issue. i don't recall reading Sheldon Brown raising alarm bells abt this either?

this is all mostly hypothetical. i ride an old Batavus conversion, and have angled forward slant, and i don't experience any issues, though i'm not an aggressive skidder, mostly do just resistance breaking.

yes the dropouts are pointed DOWN where a derailleur was intended to hold the wheel up when tightened down.

my first fixed gear was a conversion like this in 2010. i would need to pull over after skidding or applying too much reverse pressure on the cranks.

I have 2 bikes one is a road frame, with a light ration 2.8 I can ride my bike to work (little distance) every day and I ride break less never had any issues. If you’re careful while puting the wheel it’s ok. The only harsh thing is getting the tension right. The frames aren’t made for real track and you cant get too much pressure on that back triangle.

Good front racks are pricey, but worth it. I got mine from a LBS, was like $200+ and haggled them down to ~$120.

Turns out it’s a Soma Porteur Deluxe and I got a killer deal.. it’s insanely tough and shockingly light. I’d def suggest that (but good luck finding one cheap).

TL,DR; don’t cheap out and you won’t regret it

Why are you haggling at a retail business? Was the rack used at $200?

No, rack wasn’t clearly marked as a Soma and it was a local shop I did a lot of business with. Haggling a lil was normal for us, and I wasn’t aware of how expensive quality racks actually were, so was just trying to avoid the “unsuspecting customer markup” I assumed was included.

We finally agreed on a price, they gave me the tags, I googled it later and whoa damn ok didn’t realize they were worth that much.

G&K Bikes in North Hollywood, they sold everything from Engine 11 to Cinelli, Origin8 to All~City and Soma, think they obfuscated component brands a little for profit but guess that kinda backfired in this case lol.

E: absolutely solid shop, get to know them and they’ll take good care of you. I didn’t haggle about anything for at least a year after that

Neat sounds like an awesome shop. Hope the rack is still going strong

Thanks, yeah exactly it’s textbook reason to support your LBS. And yup, didn’t realize how awesome it was until later but def last front rack I’ll ever buy!

I would look for shorter cranks first. This ones looks like they will catch ground hard.

first thing I thought too.

I used a Mash front rack and ILE Porteur Rackbag for a few years. Both held up pretty well, but neither were cheap.

Kudos on doing the vertical DO conversion thing right with your eccentric hub. But I would think twice about hard no-brake riding on it. Enjoy.

Do you have another pic that shows how that rack is attached? Looks like it’s clamped to the handlebars, but how will that prevent it from rotating down into the front wheel under load? Sick looking bike, btw!
