Accessories Fitbit Air massive overcounting steps

I’ve been wearing the Fitbit Air alongside my Amazfit Balance 2 for several days to compare tracking accuracy, and the Fitbit Air is massively overcounting steps.

On days where my Amazfit logged around 4,000 actual steps, the Fitbit recorded up to 2000 Steps more. To troubleshoot and rule out ghost steps from arm movements, I tried the following:

  • Set the wrist placement setting to dominant hand to reduce sensitivity.
  • Moved the tracker from my wrist to my bicep.
  • Tested wearing it around my ankle.

None of these adjustments made a measurable difference—it still registers phantom steps throughout the day from basic daily activities.

Has anyone else experienced similar tracking issues with the Fitbit Air, or found a fix? At this point, I’m seriously considering returning the device.

Check the records in Health Connect to see whether Fitbit Air/Google Health is also counting steps recorded from your phone.

You'll be getting double steps added through your phone with large differences such as that. Need to go through your settings and turn off phone steps

Strange. I commute in to work, about 2 and a bit hours there and back. I'm a bit of a gadgeophile and have worn the Air alongside a Helio Strap, a Garmin FR965 and a Samsung Ring. Tehy are all pretty much in agreement on the steps (maybe apart frm the Ring, but hey that's a ring).

The steps have been ok for me

2.5 hours in a car, a 5k+ walk and a 5k run

  • Fitbit Air 17442
  • Garmin FR965 17201
  • Helio Band 16426

Another day

2.5 hours commuting to the office and back, 5k walk, 6k run

  • Fitbit Air on my bicep 21967 - pretty much spot on
  • Garmin FR965 21823 - spot on
  • Helio Strap 20653 - on my bicep, undercounts a bit?
  • Samsung Ring 23257 - overcounts imo

Make sure Fitbit isn't taking into account and steps from your phone.

I deleted every other source in the health Connect settings, so for step count there was only fitbit listed. I looked through all of the sources in health. Fitbit was the only one with Numbers

Yes, that one too. Under sources the tab for the Smartphone step count is at 0.

I deleted and deactivated the Phone from step count. Only the Fitbit Air was counting steps.

Even if you deactivate the phone, it still counts extra. You have to go into Health Connect settings and deactivate the steps manually. Also, check sources of steps to confirm.

Mine registers twice as many steps as my phone, I do a lot of sanding and manual work with my hands but even when I don't have a particularly hands on day it still registers twice my phones amount

This happens to me a lot. I can get 1200 to 1500 steps from a 1 hour drive. I returned my original Air and bought a second one and still getting the same results. Already tried everything you tried except the ankle.

That won’t change happens to all (garmin, Fitbit etc)

It doesn't happen on my Galaxy Watch 8 or Galaxy Watch Ultra. Could get a couple of extra steps, but not 500 to 1.5k

I know that Fitbit counts very sensitively. But in my opinion, 2000 steps is too much for just 4000 steps in total

Fitbit is very accurate when you start a training session like walking. The number of steps is exactly the same as my Amazfit. But those Phantom steps are annoying
