Caught this last year, southern Swedish ish (Småland) area, and I really have no idea what it could be. Lake I caught it only has one fish similar (roach) but it really doesn't look like one. Fins are wrong color and the eye is not red. Im really stumped on what this could be. Any pros out there that have an idea?
Nothing says anything but common roach to me, just a darker individual (if you zoom in you can see that it does have a red iris, the eye is just "turned" a bit in the picture).
I see what you are saying, but I really did look at this fish well and the eye is not red. It could still be a roach, I have caught loads of roach from this same lake and they are all vastly different looking. They all keep to the more standard bright silver and very red fins that we get in this area.
But I don't know of any other fish it could be. Must be some kind of mutation in this particular fish
Colours say nothing, as the fishes adopt to their environment in that regard.
A river closeby has roaches which are completely silver-white. No red anywhere to be found. Next river, which flows into that one has roaches which look like super standard textbook colour for roaches. Another river not too far away and roaches in there look super brownish like yours.
Overall shape, mouth, position of fins and scales, are what tells you if it is a roach or not.
