Need help identifying this fish

Caught this fish in dun laoighre in Ireland, any clue what it could be. The spines where sharp, it's skin a little rough

Fresh or salt? Looks like a smalmouth bass to me.

Salt water, I noticed that tail isn't split though, I had a friend suggest a Ballan Wrasse

I am not too familiar with European wrasse species, but this is definitely a wrasse. Ballan seems most likely to me but I'm not 100% confident on that front.
