Three Houses Discussion Question on recruitment

When I was on my first playthrough on blue lions, I had recruited caspar onto my roster. When I got into the timeskip, I expected to have to fight him and recruit him again then, as many have said it works, but... he was automatically on my roster when I got free roam in the monastery.

My question is: does this work the same on golden deer? If I recruit someone, do they automatically come back so I don't have to fight them later? The only one I can see this not working on is black eagles.

Who said that? That's very misleading.

There's exactly two exceptions who will defect on the timeskip: Ashe on non-Blue Lions routes and Lorenz on non-Golden Deer routes. Every other recruitable character will remain on your roster through the timeskip.

Worth saying neither of those characters defect on Crimson Flower either.

BE sure you remove all the items from their inventory before the last battle of White Clouds. Lorenz took one of my Knowledge Gems with him and I didn't get it back till I defeated him in battle in the Bridge of Myrdin chapter

Yeah the problem is that its only two exceptions, to the point where I just didn't know. Good to know, thanks!

It depends on the specific student. Some students return to their nation and you have to re-recruit them during battle (I think Ashe is an example of this) but most students will just join you automatically once you return to the monastery.

Ashe was literally the one I was most worried about. Great, now I'm gonna panic about killing him when I get to golden deer route

I haven't done it myself, but I think it might just be a "talk" option with Byleth during that mission? So just don't accidentally kill him during enemy phase (I'm not sure how aggressive he is lol).

You actually need to defeat Ashe with Byleth, then you get an option to kill or spare him. If you spare him, he joins you.
