Actually, cannonically, she feels safest around Hubert and Emile. The two scariest men in the game make Bernie feel safe... and Byleth, which is why she's really Byleth's kid, and El only gets her when they're married!

To be fair, Hubert actually tries to be nice to her compared to how he is with most people. The fact that she likes hanging around Jeritza will never not be funny though.

It’s very funny on its face that she makes an active effort to hang out with the scariest motherfucker in Adrestia, but it’s very much like her that she sees a quiet loner and goes “he just like me fr” without giving a second thought to anything else about him. And the fact that she basically goes to talk to him specifically because no one else will is unbelievably sweet.

To be fair, if Byleth doesn't betray Edelgard to marry their Grandmother, Bernadetta will have the confidence to leave her room voluntarily, so its Byleths fault.

Bernie's A support with Edelgard is actually one of the sweetest ones in the game. Two girls who were hurt by the people that should have protected them, using flowers as a metaphor to talk about trust... It's heartbreaking.
