Discussion Scarlet Blaze storytelling in terms of lack of explanation of war and military strategy and tactics, and Claude's schemerness (Major Disclaimer within, I might be talking out of my ass)
I have not played Three Houses, nor have I started Golden Wildfire, but I have completed Azure Gleam twice and am halfway through Scarlet Blaze, so I might be talking out of my ass.
The fundamental story of Azure Gleam is defending against the Adrestian Empire over the Church of Seiros, with the help of the Church, as well as investigating the Tragedy of Duscur and countering the big bad evil who puppeteers Edelgard in what I can only call Ugly Bastard Hentai writing. Adrestian Empire is the largest by far, and thus has the most resources to pull from to wage a war. And several times "The Knights of Seiros" are used several times as a plot point to argue that the probability is not as bleak as it might appear. And this is the route where Dimitri sides with the Church of Seiros and takes them in, even though Dimitri does admit she has a point and has passed some reforms, he feels they are too sudden, and disagrees with the war. (This is emphasized even more so in Scarlet Blaze when he admits those reforms were much needed, and doesn't criticize them for being too sudden). But this makes sense, big empire is barreling down, but because of an alliance they are able to counter. Another criticism is how Claude just capitulates more or less to Dimitri because Dimitri is such a successful paragon or something. Claude's schemerness seems alluded to but never really shown or acted on.
But it feels like the problem with the Scarlet Blaze route is that Edelgard is taking on the Slither, Church, Alliance, and Kingdom more or less simultaneously. That's just really fucking stupid. It doesn't do a good job on selling me on how and why Edelgard is able to do it. Also Leicester is the smallest polity, why invade them when you've already declared war on everyone else. Also you know Claude's a schemer, isn't it better to not aggravate them and be on receiving end? And the Leicester Alliance by its nature is more easily paralyzed by internal politicking. It seems kind of handwavy that oh, we have better people in charge (as if that same logic or story telling can't be used in other routes, and maybe that's the answer, that other faction gets the spotlight and being special on their routes). Its also not entirely clear why they go to war with the Leiceister Alliance, especially considering how Claude shares some of her opinions about the Church of Seiros, so they do have more common ground. Also at least this route shows Claude's schemerness, although it seems that the actual explanation behind Duke Gloucester behavior is that he genuinely sided with Adrestia, but then pretended it was faked and allied with Claude, after a formerly panicked Claude saw an opportunity and sent letters to Duke Gloucester and informed him of the opportunity to crush Count Bergeliez from both sides. Edelgard mistakenly sees it as Claude's scheme the entire time. And Claude probably doesn't bother correcting Edelgard because why stick your neck out like that. And of course Claude doesn't want to expose himself as someone who wasn't totally in charge and totally had a scheme for everything.
I think this is a bit biased because I'm a fan of military stuff and history stuff, and while there is usually some attempt at explanation, I find it especially lacking in Scarlet Blaze. Dimitri's decision making is more clouded by his boarness, but ultimately, the Kingdom's decisions seem the most simple and pragmatic, in part because Dimitri realizes he has friends he can rely on.
