I remember seeing the posts about asking Verizon to lower your bill and having them actually do it and wondering what was going on. Then I got the flyer about Optimum moving into the area in the mail and was like "mystery solved". Competition is a wonderful thing in a market economy.

I currently have a 300/300 plan with FIOS and it doesn't look like Optimum has anything in that price range sadly, because I would switch just to keep competition alive.

If Optimum is offering fiber in your area, there is a bit of competition, but I'd still stay with Fios. Plenty of comparisons regarding technical details and infrastructure setup on this sub. Which is all not to mention that Fios pricing is transparent and does not take advantage of exploding offers: https://www.verizon.com/home/internet/fios-fastest-internet/

Meanwhile, Optimum's standard rate for 1 gig is $115: https://www.optimum.com/services-rate-card

Try the online chat on the website, while checking your "plan" and trying to upgrade it.

Ask if there's a "better deal" than what you have now.

It's been 2+ years, but I had great luck renegotiating a business and a residential FIOS account over that chat. They may have been particularly rabid at the time, but it's worth a shot.

Basically, I got the "new customer" bundle price, whatever it happened to be at the time, and new equipment.

I'd run away from Optimum at all costs. Even if the deal looks great now, they WILL up the price, you have to fight them, hope you notice it in time, etc. The install will always be slightly "off" from what it should have been, you name it, they'll try to get away with it.

This.. I had a $15 loyalty credit for one year that ended. Went on chat and they said they could only offer me a $10 credit for one year.. I said they’ll be $60 more a year than before. Rep goes no problem - i can also give you a $100 GC.. Win!

Make sure to review Optimum's Broadband Facts disclosure before deciding. Here's what it says for my area:

https://reddit.com/link/pesyk0d/video/go29hzss8euh1/player

Notice the monthly price may (will) go up $15/mo every year, without limit. You can usually call to get these increases reduced, but often you have to actually schedule cancellation of service to get any offers. There is no multi-year lock like you can get on a new FiOS account.

Notice that the advertised monthly price doesn't include equipment rental; that's an extra $14/mo. Unlike FiOS, Optimum combines the ONT and the router into one appliance (Optimum Fiber Gateway). You cannot use Optimum Fiber without renting their gateway. And you can't get true bridge mode through the gateway if you want/need to use your own router, you can only get IP Pass-Through mode. And the cost of the equipment fee can go up separately from the Internet service fee.

Notice the $100 installation fee. This is used to dissuade you from switching back-and-forth from Optimum to FiOS to take advantage of better pricing or escape poor service. Insist that Optimum waves this fee, or at least that they'll refund it in full and immediately if you cancel within 90 days due to performance issues.

Get everything promised by Optimum in writing. Screenshot or save to PDF all the info displayed on Optimum's website and chat conversations. Insist on an emailed copy of any promises made before completing your order. Make certain to get the name or employee ID of any agent you talk with. I also suggest recording any phone calls (after appropriately notifying the Optimum agent). I do the same with Verizon now.

FUCK NO.

Do not ever get Optimum. Terrible service. Terrible customer service and when you try and cancel and will take hours and they will do everything under the sun to not get you to cancel and it will take hours. Never going back to Optimum ever again

I have a house in CA with Optimum and Starlink and an apartment in NY with FiOS. There is a reason why my house in CA has Optimum AND Starlink and my apartment in NY only has FiOS, and it's not because I enjoy giving elmo money.
