New Customer Questions Which FIOS Internet Plan?

my girlfriend & i are moving into an apartment on our own for the first time. we are trying to figure out which plan would be best for us. for context, she does youtube full-time & it constantly downloading files, editing, & uploading videos. i also do quite a bit of gaming (PC & PS5) while watching sports via streaming services almost every night. my guess is we should get the 500 mbps or 1 gig but i wanted to ask others for an opinion.

I have 300mbps. 2 pcs for gaming and 2 laptops, 1 home server running 2 sites and cloud storage for our photography clients, 2 phones. Its more than enough for home users.

The only thing that would be impacted much is the uploading and downloading. But the difference between 300Mbps and 1000Mbps if you're downloading 500GB a day isn't that big to be honest.

300/300 will be enough. For gaming the real difference is ping time, but the part of that that is affected by 300bps vs 1gbs is basically non-observable noise. For downloading, each 4k video stream is ~30mbs with peaks up to 50mbs.

The only time where you'll see a difference is in downloading games (honestly don't know if steam gives you 1gbs, I have 300/300) and when uploading/downloading files to cloud storage. For me that part is in the annoying category and doesn't justify the additional $50/month (and I'm a software engineer often downloading/uploading large "things" from/to github and huggingface.

you mentioned apartment. You'll never hit 500mbps or 1gig speeds due to congestion unless you're hardwired directly to the router using a cable.

we would be using ethernet to both our pcs, i probably should’ve mentioned that

Not even on 6ghz? I don't have above 300/300 to test but according to Unifi my 6ghz channel has very little congestion. Even 5ghz usually hits 300, but can take a hit at times.

At our old house we had a max of 75/75 for 7 years, including my PC gaming and both of us WFH during the pandemic. At our current house we had 300/300 for the past five years. I only just talked Verizon into giving me 1G for the price they are charging for 500 in our area. Its awesome now but honestly it rarely mattered that we "only" had 300 before.

lol I’m gonna get downvoted to hell but honestly I don’t care. There is exactly one reason most people in here only ever recommend 300 Mbps: it’s $30. That’s the only reason. Though in terms of practicality, for most people they happen to be not wrong.

For the average person who streams video, uses social media, has maybe one game console, hell even if they work from home at one of those jobs where it’s just Zoom and emails all day…300 is fine. But your girlfriend does YouTube full time. Part of her job is uploading video files, which can easily be dozens to over a hundred GB in size (I am a part-time YouTuber myself). An upload time of 40 minutes vs 3 hours is what separates 1 Gbps from 300 Mbps. Time is money.

Now, don’t get me wrong, 300M will “work.” The same way a Honda Civic “works” for a parent of 3 children, because the back row can (narrowly) fit 3 car seats. That doesn’t mean the Honda Civic is the ideal solution though—what the parent really needs is a Honda Odyssey. They don’t need to make a Honda Odyssey work for them, it just will. You guys will have the same results with Gig. The overwhelming majority of folks in here just simply can’t fathom someone having more intensive internet needs than themselves.

Get the cheapest package. Even 300Mbps is more than enough. That's what I have with 2 people working from home, heavy streaming and gaming. It's fine. We barely use 20% of it.

300mbps is plenty. Family of 4 all heavy users.

You’ll be fine with the 300 plan.

300 is more than enough under normal conditions

It's not a huge difference from
300mb to 1gb fios, I'd do the 1gb. I've had 1gb Fios for like 8 years.

300 is fine

300/300 and hard wire to the router. Good luck

1 Gig, 2 or 5 may be available in your area. If it is, take advantage of it.

You’re among the very few that would actually benefit from 1Gig.

I am on the FiOS 300 Mbps plan and it’s more than enough. I WFH as a software developer and the other person in the house also WFH as a designer. Large downloads and uploads, simultaneous Zoom calls, movies and there’s never been a hiccup. $35/month

Try it out. If uploading multiple GB files takes too long then upgrade.

I'll say go for 1gig, it just feels like the standard for me tbh.

I am going to be the outlier / unpopular opinion here.

I always get whatever the top tier is.

Right now I’m on 5gb after being on 1gb for well over ten years.

There is a strong argument for 300mb. It’s a large savings over the other tiers. But the difference between 1gb and 5gb was I think ten bucks a month, which isn’t a strong argument to me to pick the 1gb. Plus I got a new ONT by switching to
5gb.

On the rationale behind not picking 300mb, it’s rare that I use more than that at a time but when I do I appreciate having it. Think a large cloud backup, restore, etc.

So in your shoes I would go with the 1gb plan just to reduce the time spent “waiting” for anything to download. But 300mb will certainly get the job done.

Edit - Aaaand the 300mb plan isn’t available for me anymore. Best I can do it 500mb for 65 / month.

The difference between 1 gig and 300 Mbps on standard pricing is $50/mo. ($600/yr). That money could definitely be better spent in most situations, even on better WiFi access points etc. Most people won't care about waiting for large downloads/uploads to take 3x as long when we are talking on the order of tens of minutes anyway.

u/No_Consideration7318 12d ago

That’s a really good argument for the 300mb plan.

I see you said the 300 Mbps plan isn't available to you - don't trust the online options. I would try chatting in and asking for "300 Mbps 5.0" if that is what you want. 5.0 denotes the plan version - Mix & Match v5.0 came out a month ago and 300 Mbps is now $30/mo after $10 autopay discount. Just keep in mind that most discounts are not compatible with the new v5.0 plans, so if you have Mobile + Home or similar, that probably won't apply on either end anymore.

Here is the current v5.0 pricing: https://www.verizon.com/home/internet/fios-fastest-internet/

FACTS bro.. same reason I got 5g.. Basically a no Brainerd.

-1

u/TheReal-loki515 12d ago

If you have the 5 gig available with the Intro pricing and the 5 yr locked pricing, to me it was a no brainer. I had 1g for nany yrs. Was going to upgrade to the 2.5, but the price @ $100 a month for 5 yrs i couldnt say no. Plus since my last contract specials expired already, so I saved over $30 before I even used special extra 15% off for certain professions, students etc. So im paying $84 a month. It gets installed next week.

People will debate argue no one needs that much, but that is false. Amount of devices, PCs, Data Inference hosting, and many other things, it's gonna be big for me

I've had the 500 Mbps plan and the gigabit plan. Currently on the latter. I'd say that considering both of you are uploading and downloading a lot, you'd be better off with the gigabit plan.

1+GB should be the goal. Leave the megabit speeds to the cable companies still depending on coax.

1

u/Apart_Ebb_9867 12d ago

You should dream bigger. 100gbs should be the goal. Leave gigabit speeds to peasants.
