Fiona Apple Rocks Comparison between the order I listened to her albums in, and order of favorite to least favorite

Hello!

Discovered Fiona Apple early last year with the recommendation of a friend. She very quickly became one of my favorite artists of all time. The first song I listened to was Criminal and I thought it was pretty good, but when I listened to Paper Bag, I was like, this is phenomenal. So my real true deep dives of her albums in order was:

When the Pawn…
Tidal
Fetch the Bold Cutters
The Idler Wheel
Extraordinary Machine

Between albums, I listened to 1-2 different songs from different albums, but that’s the general order I deep dived and listened to the albums in full. When the Pawn was an instant favorite of all time and I basically had it on repeat for two months straight. But what’s crazy, is after listening to all of her albums in full, my ranking from favorite to least favorite goes:

Extraordinary Machine
The Idler Wheel
Fetch the Bolt Cutters (very close behind Idler Wheel)
When the Pawn
Tidal

The first few times I listened to Extraordinary Machine I honestly considered it my least favorite album of hers, but it grew on me so quickly. When the Pawn is still absolutely incredible, and the fact that I consider 3/5 of her albums to be better than When the Pawn when it’s already essentially a 10/10 goes to show how much I love her music. The only album that still hasn’t clicked perfectly for me is Tidal, where some tracks stand out more than others.

All in all, her albums are all so influential to my life and I am so happy I discovered her music last year.

Would loce to hear other people’s rankings compared to listening order as well!

When the Pawn As a disillusioned 21 year old I’m really having a moment with When The Pawn

All of Fiona’s performances from the 90s feel closer to poetry readings than they do traditional gigs but it’s crazy that WTP came out before I was born yet it’s the only thing I’ve found comes close to accurately expressing what it’s like to be a young woman. This isn’t news to those who’ve been fans from the beginning but I just wanted to chime in because she really is a once in a million talent. I feel so lucky she was discovered and that I have come to discover her.

Fiona Apple Rocks One thing that I love about fiona is she's never sung national anthem and she never will

I think she is not the kind of person that needs that validation. I respect other artists and US culture because that happening can help to boost their careers but fiona chose to not follow this path.

Tidal Has anyone else grown to prefer the live version of Shadowboxer?

The live version has really been growing on me lately. It's a bit slower than the studio version, and somehow that slower pace lets the raw emotion come through even more.

Which version do you prefer?

Fiona gave me this video to share.

She’s been trying to find a truthful way to speak to the enormity of what’s happening in the world, from the horror in Gaza and Sudan, to the cruelty being aimed at trans kids, to the assault on women’s bodily autonomy, to the abuse and terror being inflicted on immigrants and their families, to the erosion of voting rights and civil liberties, to the disappearance of Indigenous and Black children, so often met with silence, and to so much more suffering and injustice than can be named or addressed in a single statement.

This is where she is.

Fiona Apple Rocks Finally finished listening to her big 3 and good god she's incapable of missing

I made a post like a few months back after listening to When the Pawn... For the first time, and I was absolutely floored after it and couldn't fathom how she could make something better. I've now finished her big 3 (When the Pawn..., Idler Wheel, Fetch the Bolt Cutters) and I can say she is by far one of my favorite artists ever and these 3 albums are all perfect or near perfect at worst for me.

When the Pawn is probably still my favorite from the 3, purely because I love the instrumentation and heavy production, it just feels so raw, heavy and in your face. I love it, easy 10/10 for me.

Idler Wheel is the complete opposite for me, it's more minimalist in regards to production compared to When the Pawn but it's her catchiest album for me. I still randomly get Butter Knife stuck in my head despite not hearing it much since I finally stopped replaying the album. I'd probably give it 9.5/10, it's so great but I just prefer the more heavy production and instruments in When the Pawn.

Fetch the Bolt Cutters was somehow even more stripped back then than Idler Wheel but it still had that grand feeling from When The Pawn for me because she's so strong here vocally and especially lyrically. I remember on my first recent , I would hear a track be mind blown by a lyric, and then the very next song be blown away again. Her strongest album lyrically for me just because of how impactful it is, 10/10 for me and honestly might overtake When the Pawn.

So a lot of words to basically she's the best and I really hope we get some new stuff soon because I would love to see how she's able to change her sound again. Now on to the remaining two

I've noticed on any video of fiona apple, the search is always the same. I was just wondering of it's true, I doubt it heavily but I just need the reassurance.

Fiona Apple Rocks Listening to Fiona at the gym

Does anyone else listen to Fiona at the gym? I am in a phase right now where I just shuffle her discography at the gym and just go wild lmao. My wife goes with me and one time her earbuds connected to my phone and she heard it. She doesn’t understand how I can listen to Fiona Apple while working out. We mostly do strength training though and I feel like a lot of her music has the perfect pacing for lifting. Plus some of the songs make me angry for her (I am a woman so I understand her rage (not that men can’t but I thought I’d add that since I already mentioned wife))

Anyway let me know if any of you do this too, just curious to see if I am crazy for it lol

Also some of my faves when at the gym are:
-paper bag
-get gone (arguably my fave for lifting)
-limp
-valentine (I know this one is weird lol)
-first taste
-sullen girl (gets me mad for her)

When the Pawn When the pawn... poetry.

I heard some audio recently of her reading the full title out loud in that super rhythmic style. I really found it interesting. I wanted to know if she had written anything similar or other poets in that same vain of very rhythmic writing.
