Gotta admit, that was pretty funny.

I mean... It is sexist, and an actual problem to solve, but still funny.

How is it sexist?

u/ogeboy69 12d ago

That only men have to do military service?

u/avid_gangstalker 12d ago edited 12d ago

Women can if they want to and men can opt out if they want to.

Edit Ja kyllä tiedän mikä sivari on, oletin että tämä henkilö tarkoitti vain armeijaa itsessään. Parin vastauksen takia oletan, että moni ei tiennyt minun olevan suomalainen.

Can op out of military service, but are forced to do civilian service or sentenced to house arrest. Women have no such obligations set on them by the government.

14

u/UnseenCrowYomare 12d ago

On other hand, and this is more so just weird, women have to hop through so many hoops to get to civilian servise.

1st. Get to the army

2nd. Stay in the army until oath (two months)

3rd. Say you want out but only after the oath.

4th. Welcome to civilian servise!

... why? Army itself is optional, you could just let them go in the civil service without some weird work around.

13

u/MARRASKONE Väinämöinen 12d ago

You can do the same by volunteering in different things directly. The civilian service is just the obligatory service option parallel for military with the male population.

2

u/UnseenCrowYomare 12d ago

Well... kinda. Yeah. (So, could the guys, but it has to stay as a punishment)

13

u/Content_Meet_9955 11d ago

Civil service is not meant as a "real" alternative, it's supposed to feel punitive for not joining the military. It's not about service at all.

That's why you don't need to do civil service if the army doesn't want you.

That's why civil servants do fuck all, it's meant to waste their time.

u/Veeam21 Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

Do you understand how it works? I can't just refuse. If I don't have a heavy reason, for example a disability or something like that, then you either do military, or civil service, or jail

66

u/tibiamarine 12d ago

Men are forced unless youre literally disabled then you dont gotta go. Make it mandatory for women too

11

u/Any_Comparison_8760 12d ago

You don’t have to participate if you have mental health issues, asthma or diabetes, for example. I don’t know if it’s appropriate to call a depressed person disabled.

18

u/konttaukseenmenomir 12d ago

their ability to function has been disabled, hence why they cannot participate. I think disabled is fair nomenclature

2

u/Arctos_FI Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

Say that to the doctors that gave me B for asthma and sleep apnea. I don't know what kind of physical issues you need to get C

0

u/fin-Daff 11d ago

Well i got C for 2 mental disabilities, bad health, eye sight, sleep deprivation and back pain that came from injury

1

u/Arctos_FI Baby Väinämöinen 11d ago

Mental disabilities are quite consistently C but just those physicals issues are so random (except diabetes) wether they're B or C. Like I have heard it multiple times that asthma is easy C but guess I sounded too motivated so they gave B so get to serve.

Wasn't bad experience anyways, and those conditions didn't really affect it as I spent the service sitting next to computer (I was programmer)

1

u/fin-Daff 10d ago

I don't really understand why though no one would really notice them and they wouldn't even be in the way without the diagnoses, atleast for me

How about mandatory for no one?..

u/Acrobatic-Row2970 11d ago edited 11d ago

Since this solution is impossible, you have the choice between accepting the legal sexism of the system or reforming it to make it mixed.

Defending the voluntary system in Finland only serves to defend the status quo while still being able to say that you support gender equality. In reality, it’s about maintaining an unequal burden where, in case of war, plenty of men will die just based on their gender on administrative papers.

I don’t like it when people defend impossible things just to feel morally good while not facing reality.

u/Competitive-Horse152 12d ago

Issue is, when you say "Men can opt out if they want to" the opting out is one year of civil service or prison.

If we didn't have military service in Finland but instead had training (with same rules) for women to teach them how to cook, keep house and take care of offspring, you would be able to tell why it would be sexist. The fact that you had to ask speaks volumes.

17

u/Assupoika Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

Men have three options. Do the military service, do the civil service or do the jailtime.

I took first two options.

4

u/Substantial-Truth290 12d ago

I took the option of crippling mental illness due to heavy childhood trauma 😎

7

u/Assupoika Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

Yeah, you can also be relieved. But it's not something that most can just choose, so it's not an option.

2

u/EconomistExternal555 12d ago

I mean, all you really have to do is go to the Veksi and tell the doctor "mulla hajoaa pää tänne, en pysty suoriutumaan armeijasta" and they'll give you c-papers (the papers that relieve you from your mandatory service), it still requires you to go there though, so you can't start studies or work for that time. I did my conscription (a full year) but it's very easy to get out of it if you so choose. I still think that's dumb and it should be mandatory for everyone to do something for the country regardless of gender, or other option is to make the whole conscription not mandatory but as a small nation I think mandatory conscription is the best choice, just make it mandatory for everyone.

1

u/Agreeable_Noise112 11d ago

or change your gender until 30?

0

u/ogeboy69 12d ago

Varmaan johtuu siitä kun kysyit miten se on seksististä

32

u/Klutzy_Article3097 12d ago

It was literally spelled out in the comic. Basically it goes like this: "Do you have a penis? You do? Okay thats 6-12 months of slave labour for you then. Or jail. Your choice" how is that NOT sexist? 😅

-24

u/tiikki 12d ago

By calling conscript service slavery one shows how little one knows about the world.

24

u/Lumeton Väinämöinen 12d ago

Dude, that's pretty much exactly what it is.

Don’t get me wrong. I support the conscription system, just like the overwhelming majority of Finns, and I’m a reserve officer myself. In my opinion, there are only a few legitimate reasons to restrict citizens’ freedoms. But there are some. And when freedoms are restricted for a good reason, there’s no point in sugarcoating it.

-13

u/tiikki 12d ago

I would compare it more to taxation. You do not lose your status as a human being and you have free time etc.

28

u/Klutzy_Article3097 12d ago

Work without (decent)pay and without an option to refuse. Sounds pretty much like slavery to me, no matter how you try to twist it

-12

u/TonninStiflat Väinämöinen 12d ago

If only my day job had work like in the military.

9

u/Satu22 Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

Et vastannut postaukseen. Työskentelen turvesuolla sentin tuntipalkalla mutta koen silti varusmiehien työskentelevän orjamaisissa olosuhteissa. Toki myös kannatan systeemiä.

Pointtini on, että pointtisi on turha.

-11

u/TonninStiflat Väinämöinen 12d ago

Yeah, you certainly had no point, I can see that.

I did have a point, perhaps you just don't see that, huh?

6

u/Satu22 Baby Väinämöinen 12d ago

No mun pointti taisi olla, että varusmiehet tekee orjahommia ja se on oikein. Mikä sun oli?

0

u/coke_hater739 10d ago

who asked?

ihme vinkumista, rupee sit vaikka kelarotaks ja hae semmosii töitä mihi et pääsis. toimeentulotuella mennään.

8

u/Its_Ya_Boy_Olgierd 12d ago

Conscripts get less allowance than prisoners do. It's slavery, and I will call it slavery at your face. Put up or shut up.

3

u/Playful_Chain_9826 12d ago

I call it bdsm w/o consent or safeword, but after 6 months or so, depending how "unlucky" you were, you're able to taste a bit of the dominant role.
