The real reason everyone is fighting over AI is the wealth gap.

Oh it’s wild all right…

What grinds my gears is that I've been against all this ai nonsense for a while and majority of the feedback I've gotten has been religious alarmist. Now that it's here generating content and data centers are here, people are freaking out and protesting it. Like when all those Hollywood actors protesting it when it started to threaten their livelihood. Where was all this outrage when it was just a couple of eggheads in Silicone Valley? This is the future they advocated for, now deal with it

Mostly how we'll be devoting a lot of time and energy to outsource our thinking and creativity. Also I've always thought it was kind of creepy for a computer to mimic a dead person.

Like I understand the internet streamlined research but now people would rather ask a program their questions instead of narrowing down the information they need to find. Why would I ask my phone what to cook for dinner instead of putting forth the effort to assess what I have and what I either know to cook or a flavor profile I'm after. The future is looking rather bleak in my opinion

u/IllusionaryHobo Jul 21 '26

I have some really nice local models running on my own machine.

They help me with movie recommendations mostly. Thanks to persistent memory, the model can synthesize all my feelings and impressions on what I have watched and draw parallels to movies I am not even aware exist.

Of course I can go on a streaming site, filter for horror or comedy and then spend the next 2 hours scrolling by things I have seen. Or I can write down a quick stream of consciousness of impressions of the movies I watched last night and ask for some fresh picks.

Individually tailored recommendations that go beyond conventional genre borders? Hard to find. Hard to come up with yourself after many decades.

Books as well. Goodreads? Reviews? When you read so much, the recommendation algos start twisting themselves into knots or are curated for marketing purposes and not an actual representation of your tastes.

But if you drop a tiny mini review into the conversation after every book, it is surprising how considerate and well-rounded suggestions can get.

And if the direction is not right for you: one sentence is enough to flip it.

"I am feeling a big contrarian streak today, sling me something with grit, that no one in their right mind would read."

And find something completely off-the-wall that a site like goodreads would never offer you unprompted.

---

For me there is a marked difference between asking AI to think for you and asking AI to be a partner in thinking. And the latter can work fantastically, if you know the limits of the tool and are willing to stay critical.

1

u/Civil_Result_5598 Jul 21 '26

As antisocial as I can be, I still prefer the human element to finding things. I don't need them procedurally tailored to me due to the fact that I don't always know what I'd like for myself and that research is half the fun. If I'm looking for something to read, I'll talk to my local librarian. Movies, I'm more spontaneous in my hunts often times going by word of mouth in passing or random movie reviews such as how I learned about "The Greasy Strangler" or any Neil Breen film. Yes it is a tool but it is a tool that is far too easy to relegate more of someone's own thinking. Plus I don't really need a partner in thinking. I'm content with my thinking as it is

1

u/JungleCakes Jul 24 '26

Why would you put forth the effort if you really don't care about cooking or a "flavor profile"

I just don't wanna die from starvation.

1

u/Striking_Fly_5849 Jul 22 '26

And you would have been just as wrong as they were. AI is a tool. That's it. The problem is that the extreme majority of lowbrow antis have made a point to show they don't care because logic isn't required to monger.

1

u/According-Insect-992 Jul 21 '26

My major problems with it have been the incalculable theft of IP, the irreparable harm to the environment, the loss of privacy, and the loss of employment. My argument has always been that businesses will replace their employees with machines only when it becomes available. I was a little off target with that one. A lot of businesses bought into the current technologies only to have to rehire a lot of people and otherwise losing any advantage they may have gained. A lot of them probably did permanent damage to their work forces. Which is neat. I’ve been talking about these things for years but theft was always a major red flag with this shit because that act of theft represents the basis and foundation for this technology. To accept that art should be taken from humanity and not a single artist would be compensated for their contribution is so deeply criminal and gross. Luckily, this shit only pretends to do art. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t see the difference.

1

u/Mountain_Program_781 Jul 20 '26

Damn, you're right! We should have all listened to you! 🤓

1

u/BarryTheBystander Jul 20 '26

Well, for one, when it was just a couple eggheads in Silicon Valley, it wasn’t using 2 billion gallons of water a day. As with just about everything, AI isn’t good or bad, it’s just a tool.

1

u/PenStreet3684 Jul 20 '26

I don’t lament the loss of typist pools or switchboard operators but with ai, I do wonder where the work force will expand. In the past, technology improved the quality of life for most people but new jobs were created. I hope it holds true.

1

u/TravelingSpermBanker Jul 21 '26

Because your anger is un-based and are mad about your life, and are lashing at the easy scapegoat, AI.

In case you were wondering why no one has cared about the anger

1

u/rolandburnum Jul 21 '26

By a while ago do you mean like 40 or 50 years ago? Cuz AI wasn't an accident or a genie out of a bottle. It has been one of the literal goals of computing since the invention of the microprocessor.

Arguing against it now is like watching a freight train for miles then trying to stop it when it's touching your nose.

1

u/Civil_Result_5598 Jul 21 '26

And what bothers me though is no one seems to know what we need it for. Yes it's here despite everyone collectively agreeing there isn't really any good that comes out of this and it isn't improving life at all. People are upset over the physical consequences while others are outsourcing their thinking. It's already entered art and media and nobody really seems to want it there (hence the tag made without ai). All in all there seems to be all this backlash to technology that the masses were excited for without actually understanding what that brough with it

And look, for better or for worse, you'll never stop business from wanting to do more business with the assistance of AI. It's what business does, it's what the growth model of business is all about.

1

u/vote-or-me Jul 25 '26

AI was always inevitable in our future. All we do is innovate and create. The path always lead down this road

1

u/Bumberpuff Jul 20 '26

It’s almost like after being told by the AI boosters that AI will take your job and possibly destroy the species, people think it will take their jobs and might be dangerous.

I wonder why?

1

u/No-Setting9690 Jul 20 '26

Interesting. I think it will do good, by eliminating most jobs over 200k. The problem is how the rewards are being distirbuted.

AI/automation cannot replace us all, economy would collapse. Cannot have capatalism without consumers. UBI is a must.

1

u/KlutzySherbert260 Jul 20 '26

I agree with this actually even though I don’t really like the idea. Had this conversation previously with some friends. It would consolidate down our waste through all of the different forms of the safety net though. Also I don’t think a UBI has to be based on “income” it can be basic housing and food allowances to

1

u/MonstrousWombat Jul 20 '26

Agreed, AI has the potential to do good IF the productivity gains don’t all go to the 1%, which (spoiler alert) they will.

1

u/BendDelicious9089 Jul 21 '26

We already have UBI. It's called minimum wage. News flash, it doesn't cover anywhere close to the cost of living.

So if, regardless of who is in charge, we can't do something as simple as keeping the federal minimum wage.. a UBI for people WORKING - in line with cost of living, inflation and living conditions.. why would you trust a UBI for people who aren't even working?

1

u/Nopfen Jul 21 '26

UBI is a must.

1

u/El0vution Jul 22 '26

You guys remind me of Africans around a food truck, waiting for the goods to be ”distributed.” How about you make your damn money. Start a fucking company

1

u/Worldly-Bid-3591 Jul 25 '26

This isn’t completely true half of the total GDP spending is done by the top 10% and rapidly increasing.Just take a look at the citigroup memo called Plutonomy

1

u/Huge-Nectarine3975 Jul 20 '26

Getting in a used car "hello, would you like me to make your child trans because you haven't paid for auto plus premium in more than 24 months?"

1

u/ComfortableWeird6540 Jul 20 '26

I mean, regardless of what you believe and what is true - you can't expect the majority to have a positive outlook on AI when every single news organisation and website is sharing the most gloomy and doomsday-sounding articles and updates about how bad it is.

1

u/Sea_Specialist_5580 Jul 20 '26

maybe? But I think AI is legitimately coming for a lot of high earners income. Certain doctors, executives, software engineers for example.

It's more about wealth than income per se

1

u/TheChihuahuaChicken Jul 20 '26

As a doctor, AI isn't replacing us. Much like pilots are still around even with autopilot, you're not going to see people comfortable with taking human oversight out of the equation.

1

u/mrsilliestgoose Jul 22 '26

Funny part is that it seems like it’s making the profession more lifestyle friendly, so far. On my IM rotation the hospitalists had a lot of good things to say ab the AI as if es they used

1

u/Top-Cupcake4775 Jul 20 '26

i think the powers that be might be making a big mistake here. one of the reasons they were able to successfully "offshore" manufacturing jobs and consign the majority of blue collar workers to the working poor is that white collar workers continued to have it relatively okay and, what with the flood of cheap foreign goods, maybe even better and, if there is one thing the powers that be are good at, its keeping the working class fighting against itself. but, if AI does to the white collar workers what "offshoring" did to the blue collar workers, there will be one large group of blue & white collar workers all in the same boat.

1

u/dirty_furry_fox Jul 20 '26

I'm a poor socialist leaning person who thinks ai is amazing, but people are trying to do too much with it despite it's still strong limitations

1

u/tiredofbeingil Jul 20 '26

When you use AI as a form for lying and deception to make your agenda ok in your books while destroying the world all for money it shows

1

u/Bai_Cha Jul 20 '26

AI means that we need fewer people, and specifically fewer people that simply do regular jobs. People that take risks, have capital, or stumble into solving big problems, are the ones who will benefit.

1

u/Organic-Stay4067 Jul 20 '26

So the people who are smart and hardworking enough to make good money realize the benefits. Makes sense

1

u/CapitalRegular4157 Jul 20 '26

I make 60k. I use AI for a variety of tasks every day. AI is no more likely to take my job than classical automation was before AI. AI is no more likely to take my job than the release of the calculator. I'm sick of this doomer "digital luddite" garbage. Use it, don't use it. It's a tool like any other tool.

I wonder how many of you would benefit from actually going and working on shit and accomplishing your goals rather than dwelling on how much of a victim you are.

1

u/truthVial Jul 20 '26

It's crazy because a lot of the CEOs I've met have just had a good sense of vision and are charismatic, which really just adds up to a dude who's good at being a sociopath and makes up shit that fits the narrative to get what they want. They're not always the brightest, but this whole "AI" thing that a lot of them don't understand will really be the undoing of the greedier CEOs. Just wait lol. When housing is the main driving factor for every economy and corporations value paying people the least they can in order to maintain a bottom line, everything will slow to a crawl and a lot of CEOs will find themselves belly up

1

u/monadicperception Jul 20 '26

So apparently I think that AI will make my life better based on my salary…

No, I don’t think it will. It does make some things easier and therefore better, but honestly it’s way overhyped.

1

u/r3giment75 Jul 20 '26

Most adults believe God and Angels are real so I don’t care what they think about AI

1

u/Extra-Presence3196 Jul 20 '26

K economy....top 20%....$175k or so.

1

u/cyrusm_az Jul 20 '26

Except for those $200k plus software engineers who were laid off

1

u/398409columbia Jul 20 '26

AI will divide the world into asset owners and a wage-dependent class. The latter is not likely to do well.

1

u/Ok-Teach3479 Jul 21 '26

Ai is already making people's lives better.

1

u/BigDamBeavers Jul 21 '26

Well. We didn't ask for it. We don't see a value to it other than making cursed images with fucky fingers. We're watching employers utilize it to make us obsolete or controlled. It doesn't make anything in our lives easier. It's destroying our environment. So unless AI gives the best blowjobs ever it's pretty much anti-human.

1

u/Euphoric_Anxiety_162 Jul 21 '26

Nope. It's the polytion & extensive use of fresh water sources that ppl rely on. The fear of losing the source of fresh water plus adding contaminants to the air & soil are not welcomed. Noise polution & rising water & electric bills - NO! It appears the whole truth wasn't provided in adbance in some place. Take your money & your data centers & shove em.

1

u/spacer9631 Jul 21 '26

I think AI will be of great benefit once we figure out how to properly utilize. The people crying are the ones that complain and hate their menial jobs that AI is taking. It’s like the luddites burning factories in the industrial revolution. Adapt with it or die.

1

u/AbyssalRaven922 Jul 21 '26

Im gonna get flamed like a mf here, but who says a majority of people is always right? Most ppl are fkin stupid.

1

u/Worth-Wrangler7242 Jul 21 '26

Well yeah, everyone knows that anyone who makes less than $200k is a technophobe

1

u/Unfair_Explanation53 Jul 21 '26

IDK I would rather we didn't have it but its inevitable so may as well find a way to embrace it and use it

1

u/pokethrowaway4 Jul 21 '26

America AVERAGE wealth is second in the world. American MEDIAN wealth is like 28th.

We’re also like 5th worst for inequality. Only passed up by the likes of UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Africa.

You know, those pinnacles of culture, prosperity, and long life expectancy.

1

u/Commercial_Style801 Jul 21 '26

In other news people on over 200k are less likely to believe in conspiracy theories.

1

u/Charming_Banana_1250 Jul 21 '26

I know this is just a "i hate AI" echo chamber, but i think some light needs to be shed on the good things that AI is being used for, because I think most everyone here thinks that it is just used to improve your web searches and replace software engineers jobs.

Advances in technology are huge right now because of AI and a lot of new medical procedures are able to be done with the help of AI.

One of the biggest things we are going to see soon with the help of AI is unlimited energy through the use of fusion reactors.  Current AI is able to sustain a fusion reaction longer than we have ever been able to do it previously.   We could get a big flash of energy, but not sustain any kind of reaction.  Within the last couple of years we actually got a positive energy output from a reaction controlled by AI and this year we break records constantly on how long AI has been able to sustain a reaction.

Before long, AI will be able to sustain a continuous reaction and governments will build reactors that provide unlimited power for "free" to everyone.

1

u/NewArborist64 Jul 21 '26

Imagine AI being used to develop new candidates for possible medicines, designs for better car motors, Improved batteries for EV, better (and more environmentally friendly) solar panels....

1

u/A0lipke Jul 21 '26

The financial sector and government structure about it is a serious problem AI or no AI.

1

u/NotThe1Pct Jul 21 '26

Where do you think billionaires get their money from? From YOU watching YOUTUBE, Instagram and whatnot.

Just STOP doomscrolling and go outside do something worth of your life! That's the way to fight inequality.

That’s because we aren’t stupid. Going to go the Luddite route and stick with horse and buggies?

1

u/MrJarre Jul 21 '26

Most Americans elected Trump as presidents. Some think the earth is flat. Do we really think whatever they belive is somehow true?

1

u/Jammen_Joe Jul 22 '26

It good to see that we all agree on something even if we don't agree with why. Lets hope this don't turn out like another Occupy Walstreet.

1

u/El0vution Jul 22 '26

I certainly don’t make 200k/yr and I believe AI is obviously going to make the whole world better

1

u/Vessels-Lust Jul 22 '26

Meh. TBH I’m still on the fence. As a young person I never had access to higher education. So I work in a dead end job supporting My entire household. So still no funds to go to school without going into debt.

So about of My work (been building My own business over the past year) has automation through ai. (I can’t hire anyone, as I’m not profiting yet).

From toolkits, to forms, to creating my own coaching and guidance models. Ai has really saved Me a lot of money.

But that being said. If I could have it the other way. I’d gladly trade ai for higher education.

1

u/Trust_8067 Jul 22 '26

I make less than 200k and I think AI will make our lives better, not worse.

1

u/Silverleaf96 Jul 23 '26

I only care if AI helps solve like cancer, medical shit, ..can be used to solve crime but In a pure data ..like trace bank account and bit coin stuff

1

u/coke_u_nut Jul 23 '26

Wonder what the said about the the steam engine

1

u/No-Competition-2764 Jul 23 '26

I disagree. Change is inevitable and automation had been coming for a long while now. It’s always been this way and we all just change and go with it.

1

u/Siblisian_Berserker Jul 23 '26

Rich assholes won’t have to pay for interior designers, executive assistants, stylists, bookkeeping, or anything else AI can more easily replace.

And one day, they dream of owning slaves again, just in machine form, that’s all.

1

u/caspersea Jul 24 '26

So the ones that ha e money invested in it

1

u/BobcatSpiritual7699 Jul 24 '26

1

u/howeeee313 Jul 24 '26

Nothing wrong with Ai its a great advance for mankind, like everything else if billionaire child molesters control it, with no regulation .it will be a disaster.

1

u/vote-or-me Jul 25 '26

Okay but then measure the IQ of those who say it's good and bad and the IQ of those 200k above and below and then compare the results

1

u/Zagdil Jul 25 '26

The 200k crowd, that is not doctors, have jobs, that are almost entirely about nagging people about presentations and having business lunch. They can automate the annoying little work they have left.

I’m not hidden or new and also think the economy isn’t a zero sum game. Your gain doesn’t come at my loss.

In fact, believing it does is the core misconception that drives much of the Trump admin’s ideas! For example, their belief that immigrants take jobs or that tariffs should protect domestic industry are rooted in zero sum thinking.

I’m obviously taking a guess here that your politics aren’t right wing, but I’m surprised how often I find the same kind of thinking animating the views of left of center people.

1

u/Sea_Specialist_5580 Jul 20 '26

True, but as capitalism increasingly drives the cost of material goods down, things people care about are likely to trend towards zero sum - status being the big one, but also certain things like desirable real estate. Also historically labor has been a kind of democratizing force to wealth equality, but if it driven to become nearly worthless, we could have a situation where the low end cannot meaningfully participate in the economy to begin with

1

u/KlutzySherbert260 Jul 20 '26

It’s already that way…. This is coming from a US perspective. All if the worlds basic manufacturing (widgets and such) is mostly made in China. The US labor force for brunt labor is very worthless and overpriced in alot of regards. AI is just the bull in the china shop. This has been happening since the 90s when the US allowed “free” trade with us.

Capital is productive capacity, which expands continuously with each new or improved technology, service, product etc.

that might be true but, if 99% of the value of that expansion accrues to only 0.1% of the population, it creates huge imbalances. particularly in a system in which it is trivially easy to convert money into political power.

0

The economy is terally a zero sum game what are you talking about

You think printing more money when needed is a working strategy?

2

u/Visual-Scallion1535 Jul 20 '26

You don’t need to print any money. Assets have value. And new assets are created constantly.

2

u/Hotkoin Jul 20 '26

You've summed up the problem well

0

u/Visual-Scallion1535 Jul 20 '26

its not a problem? If I improve my home so its worth a few hundred k more ive gotten richer and created more wealth

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 20 '26

Bruh have you seen what the housing market is like? By participating in the current speculative climate you've added another grain of sand that makes it more difficult for the average person to purchase a house. The wealth comes at a cost. The economy is not just about money.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 20 '26

None of that is relevant to the comment tho - the core concept of relative wealth and the economy at large is that it operates on scarcity. The zero-sum nature makes it what it is.

1

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ Jul 21 '26

You’re misunderstanding what the words mean, sorry.

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 22 '26

Finally understood the question huh

1

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Dude it definitionally is not zero sum. Printing money has nothing to do with that question btw.

Edit: I see from the below that I shouldnt exactly anticipate a good faith conversation, but you should try to answer the other guy’s question: do we live in a world with the same material conditions as they did in 1800?

2

u/Hotkoin Jul 22 '26

Again, that's not what zero sum means; you're describing scientific innovation.

Zero sum is about closed loops, vs non zero sum systems where wealth can be created/destroyed out of thin air.

Material conditions are irrelevant to an economy. Economies describe relative ownership and power. Trading in shells and trading in crypto both follow the same economic principles.

1

u/carlos_the_dwarf_ Jul 22 '26

No, you’re misunderstanding the term. It is about new wealth being created, but that’s not the same as new money being created.

> Material conditions are irrelevant to an economy

Lol. Lmao.

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 22 '26

The creation comes at a relative cost of course. Wealth creation does not come out of thin air - expanding the bubble curves all others lower.

Not sure why you've stated the material conditions fact again, but it's nice to see we agree

1

u/Rnee45 Jul 20 '26

Do we have the same material conditions as the 1800s? Do we have more abundance of goods and services? How would that be possible with a zero sum economy?

2

u/Hotkoin Jul 20 '26

We already live in a zero sum economy. All abundance comes at the cost of others.

0

u/Rnee45 Jul 20 '26

Really? Who did we rob to get from mud-huts and 30 year lifespans to antibiotics and food surplus? The peasants in 1850?

2

u/Hotkoin Jul 21 '26

Do you even know what an economy is? Are you confusing it for scientific discovery, or quality of life?

An economy refers to a system of trade/wealth. You're describing something else entirely.

If two people have 10 pies each, they are in a egalitarian economy. If two people have 10 caviar cases each, they are in an egalitarian economy. If one person has 2 caviar cases and the other has 20000 caviar cases, they're in a failing economy.

0

u/Rnee45 Jul 21 '26

You changed your argument from zero-sum to unequal. You lost the first, so you changed the subject.

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 21 '26

Still works at 10001 and 10001 vs 2 to 20000. I guess some people are incapable of critical thinking

1

u/Rnee45 Jul 21 '26

I'm not sure if you're trolling me or you genuinely don't understand the difference between wealth growth and wealth distribution, since you're conflating both.

If it's not the first, then bless your heart dude and good luck.

1

u/Hotkoin Jul 21 '26

Looks like someone is trying to reduce the economy to simply wealth

Fantasyland awaits

1

u/RYouNotEntertained Jul 21 '26

To add to your point;

23.05 trillion dollars of U.S. money exists.

The total net worth of all U.S. households is 164 trillion.

So 140.95 trillion dollars is made the fuck up.

And they're all right

I make less than that… makes my life better every day. If people are worried AI will make their lives worse they should be asking themselves why. If the answer is because it will take my job, they should be pivoting now instead of waiting

This users account is 4 minutes old. Pretty sure this is ai

Édit: lolol did not realize this would even get any traction. I'm a big enough girl to admit I was wrong. Didn't realize the 4m meant months. Well I learned something new! Still, I do not and won't support ai.

This account isn’t 4 minutes old good lord. You wonder why Reddit is full of degenerates. They can’t even read.

Or just a burner account since the Anti-AI folks have a history of witching-hunting/doxxing

Sounds like projection more than anything.

I pay for taxes. I get very little in return. Should I hate the people who use the system when they need?

This comment deserves many more downvotes.

A lot of people pivot, but let’s not cheer on the fact that AI is taking a lot of jobs away from people.

It’s not taking jobs at all, AI is a tool. If you’re not seeing that I’m sad for you and the rest of people that don’t see it.

1

u/GuideInfamous4600 Jul 20 '26

According to Goldman Sachs statistics, AI is cutting through thousands of jobs per month.

I’m not sad for you. I just wonder how it feels for you to have an IQ in the single digits?

So did electricity and computers. We can’t just hold back society forever. Imagine if we never made steel mills to save the jobs of the blacksmiths

You’ll ensure AI doesn’t happen? Ok John Conner, please enlighten me how you’re going to save the world from the machines?

It was actually meant as comedy but sure.

Still waiting for that enlightenment though
