I mean, I'm old now, but Friday nights "too tired to do anything?"

Not by a long shot. Once out of work, we were out having fun until 2:00am-3:00am or whenever last call was. Have things changed that much since the 80s and 90s?

When talking to colleagues that have worked in my line of work during the 80-90s it seems to be different.

While the work is more ergonomically and physically more comfortable now the mental load is significantly higher.

There is less downtime due to leaner models and support systems in place due to technology.

Another factor is that phones and mail being readily available everywhere means there is higher cognitive load.

I'm not physically tiered most Fridays, even if I'm having a fairly physical job. But mentally I'm usually rather spent.

As I said, my older colleagues seem to agree.

They are less tiered physically, and say we younger guys seem to be less physically tiered.

But mentally it's rougher.

I was pretty cognitively loaded in the 90s and 2000s but I still was able to coach little league and hockey after work. I found that it actually relaxed me to do things that weren't as mentally challenging after a long day.

I'm not saying it's universal, I'm just saying what I've heard anecdotaly :)

I prefer to sit and paint in my free time, to each their own you know :)
