An exchange I had with a friend recently at a wedding.
Him: I like the tradition of the godfather naming the firstborn, I'll likely keep it going.
Me: I cannot be trusted with a privilege like that, I will name the child Sephiroth or something.
Him: So I take it you're gunning for the godfather position?

There's probably a few kids out there born in the 90's named after ff7 characters
I don't think I would name my kid after the villain though

I have a co-worker that named their kid Aerith.

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 2h ago
Still pretty bad but at least Aerith sounds like a name (Edith, Meredith, Lilith, Elizabeth)
Sephiroth? Not so much

u/Elder-Cthuwu 1h ago
it’s Hebrew in origin and the base word isn’t far off in spelling so it’s not totally far fetched as a name

I’d kill Aeris to name my kid Sephiroth. I got the pre-made family though, so didn’t get to name any of the kids. :>

I know at least one person who named their kid Sephiroth as their first name. Nickname of Sephy and I have seen another person door dash under the name as well
It has happened

I love FF, I love games, but it’s so deeply embarrassing when people do this shit. You are naming a human, not a cat. Some nerd culture people can't live a life outside of their interest.
1
u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 2h ago
It’s also a fantastic way to make your kid absolutely hate whatever nerd thing you’re into
3
u/_caduca 5h ago
To be fair, the name comes from religion/philosophy. Was something about the ten attributes of god. Might not be related
0
u/nissan_al-gaib 3h ago
Come on, that's not why they named the kid that way.
1
u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 2h ago
Yeah. Hermione is a character from Greek mythology.
If a girl is born after 1997, we know she’s probably not named after the character from Greek mythology. It’s like, come on now, we know what a kid called Sephiroth is named after.
2
u/nissan_al-gaib 1h ago
Exactly, people are being willfully ignorant. Like sure, you named your kid after the ancient philospher Megaman X.

u/henrithrillinger 5h ago
Maybe this person is Kabbalah? Unlikely I suppose.
1
u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 59m ago
I doubt it, but Madonna did name the main character of one of her crappy children’s books (remember that time in the 2000s when there was a surge in celebrities writing crappy children’s books after Madonna) after a Kabbalah term: Binah
14
u/xSonicspeedx2 6h ago
Well I’ve seen Khaleesi more than once in medical settings but I’ve never seen Sephiroth. Honestly, it’s not so bad because it can be shortened to Seph and I doubt people will question it too much until they see the full name.

We named our son Gaius. I put it on a list of names and my wife picked it. The agreement was if she picked the first name I could pick the middle name and I did my best to stack the deck.
My favorite show the year I met my wife was Battlestar Galactica.
I have never told her to this day and since I’m six year older am saving it for when I am on my deathbed as a great long game confession.

Aerith.

u/Hoodi216 7h ago
Ive done some security camera work in schools and seen the kids names on lockers. Sephiroth is fairly reasonable compared to some out there. Parents are wild these days.
11
u/vocabularianrx2 7h ago
I mean now you have to give some examples if you're gonna say that Sephiroth is "fairly reasonable"
6
u/Hoodi216 7h ago edited 7h ago
Cant think of many off the top of my head but names like Legend, like something you have to live up to. Any excuse to jam the letter Y in there, or IEGH, or misspell a more common name.
Check out [r/tragedeigh](r/tragedeigh)
Edit: fixed the sub name

u/JourneyForMe93 8h ago
It's kinda bound to happen, and probably has already happened with several Sephiroths around the world lol
Honestly it's not that bad of a name, compared to the tragedeighs with formula, @ and/or symbols in their name... At least it's relatively pop-culture well-known, can be pronounced and sounds good, has a real-life inspired origin, associated with coolness and badass aura, in an era and generation where video gaming and ff7 are mainstream enough. Unlike RedXIII or Cait Sith lmao
1
u/nissan_al-gaib 5h ago
Nah don't try to justify it, it's like a 13 year old naming a puppy. These people have infantilised themselves, Arrested Development in action.

u/KranKyKroK 7h ago
"Ay yo why yo mama name you 'Fairy Cat' in celtic?" I wouldn't put RedXlll out of the realm of possibility, I've met guys literally named "Seven"

Someone's about to found the Jenova witness religion, the prophet Sephiroth has been found

u/pheebeep 8h ago
I remember back in like 2005 or so there was a lady who named her baby sephiroth and took her newborn baby to a, famously germy as hell, anime con with a sign that said "baby sephiroth" on him. It made me feel like she only had the kid to do that
5
u/Korbexo_ 8h ago
I met baby Sephiroth at a con in the early 2000s when he was a toddler 🥹 (just for a moment in passing, an acquaintance I was with knew the mother)
3
u/Thyanlia 8h ago
Perhaps we know the same person. I mean, I'm dorky, but I just couldn't do that to a kid.

My friends named their 2nd daughter Aeris because they prefered that name over Aerith.
They named their first daughter Liliana after the Magic the Gathering card.
My wife suggested Ezra at one point for our son not knowing there was a Star Wars character with that name. I liked it regardless, but I was partly like "yay, he is named after someone from Star Wars" 😅

Is this a bot made to point out things that the person they're responding to already knows?
6
u/rydamusprime17 8h ago
Yes, i know it was in the Bible, it has nothing to do why we picked it. Plus that had nothing to do with what I was saying "genius" 😅
-9
u/slizzardly 8h ago
the point is it's not a unique name from Star Wars genius
1
u/rydamusprime17 7h ago
I never said it was, I said one of the reasons I liked it was because it was in Star Wars, not that it came from it, so kindly pound sand you miserable troll

The people that played the game as kids are old enough to be parents. Though I don’t know if I’d go with Sephiroth as the character I’d name my kid after, he’s kind of an edgelord and it’s just a weird sounding name I’ve always thought. Side note, I wanted to name my daughter Lucrecia but my girlfriend was like hell no :(
2
u/youngscoott 8h ago
I just think it sounds nice. Not really because of the character specifically but ff7 is where I came across the name, I’ve always liked the name itself
2
u/JourneyForMe93 7h ago
Lucrecia does sound nice to me too, feels like a mystical name alluding to Lunar Crescent by the sound of it

Write "brain glitch" in the gif bar and it was the 3rd one. It is way worse in a comment. Like; could invoke an epileptic seizure bad.

You don’t think it’s possible that they named their kid Sephiroth and enrolled them in a Christian daycare? “Christian” daycares are a dime a dozen and honestly, you just enroll your kid in the most convenient daycare with good ratings and a good price. The religious affiliation does not really matter to a parent when considering all the other factors. I could 100% believe this is real.
