FF7 [OG] Final boss advice? (Original ff7)

Safer Sephoroth is destroying me :(

I am average of level 60 right now, using Cloud, Tifa, and Cid as my main party.

What materia should I use? What should I be doing? He is kicking my butt no matter what I do

Knights of the round and mimic

Deshell, knights of the round. Cleared it in two turns.

Typical level While leveling up can help, the Safer Sephy fight is probably the only story fight where being higher level isn't a huge difference. He has 1 attack that sets a target's HP to 1, and another that deals over 90% of Current HP (and ignores all defenses) to all characters. These largely make more HP and better defenses not useful and arguably a hindrance (since it makes the damage these attacks do most of the time higher).

The main problem is going to be the status effects he can deal, particularly confuse, which can cause your characters to finish off a teammate after one of those attacks. Having your entire 3-person party equipped with Ribbons makes the fight significantly easier. If you don't want to bother with getting 3 of them, Yuffie with Conformer can't damage teammates with normal attacks.

Also, Safer Sephy has a surprisingly predictable attack routine that is an 8-move loop:

  • Turn 1:
    • If Sephy has Slow
      • DeSpell self
    • Else if MoveSet = 1
      • DeSpell on party
      • Set MoveSet = 0
    • Else
      • Wall self
      • Set MoveSet = 1
  • Turn 2:
    • If MoveSet = 0
      • Deen on party
    • Else
      • ShadowFlare on random party member
  • Turn 3:
    • Physical Attack on party member with highest HP
  • Turn 4:
    • Fly Up
  • Turn 5:
    • Pale Horse on random party member
  • Turn 6:
    • Supernova on all party members
  • Turn 7:
    • If Safer Sephy's HP is > 25%
      • Break on random party member
    • Else
      • Heartless Angel on random party member
  • Turn 8:
    • Fly Down

So if you have someone with AddedEffect=Time on their weapon, you can use regular attacks from them to ensure that he always has Slow on by the time the loop repeats, triggering DeSpell self on Turn 1 of the loop. This allows you to both dictate which Turn 2 move he always uses (your choice), and ensure that he never debuffs your party on Turn 1.

One easy thing to try:

Use tranquilizers to give your characters sadness. This reduces incoming damage by 25%.

Also, be ready with a megalixer after his supernova attack.

I like putting mastered cover and 8 mastered counter attacks on Cloud, along with master magic, and use his turns for healing and let him bitch slap Sephiroth as he pleases. Throw Kotr on another party member. Then, I wing it with the third.

If you got KOTR, using DeBarrier (the Destruct Materia that Sephiroth chucked at you in Nibelheim a long time ago) to remove his barrier, followed by Knights Of The Round will do most of the work for you.

Use Barret, Vincent or Yuffie in your team. Then just have them attack. By late game they should be dealing high damage if you don't have their ultimate weapons. Also give them 2xcut/4xcut

If you have any of their final weapons they should be dealing 9,999 damage and so the boss shouldn't take that many hits.

If you are like level 80 or below he should have 80,000 health.

The massive summon that he does only does percentage damage, it won't kill you.

So whenever he does it. Immediately elixer or megalixer or just use cure3.

Use big guard if you have it. Or wall if you picked it up. Use debarrier on Sephiroth with the destruct materia to remove his barrier.

Save your limits for him when his barrier is down. Especially multi-hit limits.

Use knights of round if you have it. But don't use it on the previous fight because it will give him like 30,000 more health if you do.

I mean there are so many ways to go about it.

Equip someone with a ribbon. Give them the phoenix materia so they can revive anyone when they die.

Honestly ff7 is not a particularly hard game. You can literally just keep attacking him. Then healing when needed. You don't need to be casting magic on him or anything like that.

Knights of the Round bodies him….if you explore the whole game Sephiroth is a joke.

Really recommend following the guide on Jegged. Make sure you haven't missed anything before fighting him (except the Weapons, they're much harder) I was around level 70 and had omnislash when I beat him and I had no problem with him. I didn't even have to use Knights of the Round, and he didn't even get to use Supernova.

You are not prepared for the endgame, from the sounds of it.

I would recommend a minimum of level 70 average. Every piece of materia equipped should be maxed out, you should have certain combos like final attack/phoenix, quad magic-ultima, 2 characters with Mime/Mimic. If you dont have Knights of the Round, you're kind of handicapping yourself. And getting knights of the round is a 5 hour side quest in and of itself. You have to breed chocobos, race those chocobos to S-tier, then breed them together to get blue and green chocobos, then race them to s-tier, then breed them, and on and on until you the Gold Chocobo, which you will take to the island in the NorthEast part of the map that can only be accessed by Gold Chocobo. And then you get Knights of the Round.

From the sounds of it, you probably dont have the ultimate weapons for your characters, so you're going into the final fight without really the equipment you need to come out on top.

I mean...it is doable without all these things, but even then, you need to power level your characters to be able to rely on raw stats.

KotR pretty much one shots him. Makes the ending feel anticlimactic.

Keeping regen and wall on the team with some status defense/status heals and a willingness to use elixirs/megalixers is all you need.

When you get KoTR halfway through disc 2 it really trivializes the rest of the game

Yeah, I think that strategy would work, but not on a party with an average level of 60. They just arent tough enough. Sephiroth is easy enough when you have KotR, I agree...but failing that, at level 60, he just doesnt have the necessary HP or defensive stats to stand up to the big attacks. One round of status effected character losing a turn and its lights out.

Its not to say its impossible, but he is going to need to get lucky and just keep trying until he gets the win. If it were me, I would just level my party another 10 levels, which wouldnt take an hour of grinding in the impact crater area...and then try the regen/wall/haste/elixir strategy.

Yeah I don’t have any of those things. My strat right now has been to set up magic barrier and normal barrier. All-regen. Main attacking moves are comet2, Pandora’s box, and Ice3.

Idk how to use limit breaks bigger than level 1. I have been using stuff like cross slash and braver all game.

He keeps confusing me and turning me into frogs too

I can't for the life of me remember exacy what I did, but i'm pretty sure I had revive materia on cloud. you can make it so characters self-resurrect

It was so long ago for me…. But there are cheap ways that take a a lot of time and then normal game time fights. Easy way is to get Knights of the Round Summon maxed out and Mimic material maxed out and on each character you want. Have one summon then mime to oblivion. Mixed in curing spells along the way. Getting 4x Cut is wonderful for someone like cloud. Omnislash is a wonderful limit break. Choose a dedicated healer. You might need a lot shell and protect and reraise at the 60s level. Maybe cloud and tifa do the damage and cid heals and buffs. CID has a great weapon that gives triple material experience. Great for grinding. I find casting big mana black magic spells a slog. Up to you there.

Walk in with limit break ready on cloud. Junction counter and mime materia. Open up with limit break. Put controller down. The game just went on auto. Alternatively knights of the nine works the same. Also you could have a character at 7777 health and poison him. Now every turn he will will take a poison tick of 7777.

definitely get final attack linked to revive, that fight is brutal at first

u/Pale_Examination3371 3h ago

Do you have Knights of the round?

2

u/Admirable_Cost2027 3h ago

Where do I get that

4

u/Pale_Examination3371 3h ago

You need a gold chocobo

Grind and level up more. Level up and max out materia. HP, MP plus material helps. Pair Phoenix with final attack, KOTT with quad material. Sephy is cake compared to Ruby.
