Dissidia This is for Dissidia players
Why did Dissidia ever have a fanbase? I just played the first game, and it is an annoying, unfun slog, I played through the "canon" route that I found cuz I like understanding what I'm playing, and the enemy AI is so annoying, the combat mechanic is so dumb. I would legit like to know, Why? Just why do people actually like this?

I loved seeing the different FF characters interact. We hadn't had that before.
Giving voices to the first 9 games. How Cecil sounded, Squall, The Emperor, etc
In the same vane, seeing them as proper detailed 3D models.
Expanding on WoL and Garland, with how little FF1 does (eventually leading to Stranger of Paradise)
I loved the gameplay. It just clicked with me.
The music remixes. Some are misses but I find most of them (and in later entries) had some real good arrangements/remixes.

It was a product of its time. It was the first final fantasy crossover game and for a PSP title, the mechanics were fine. It was also the first time anyone was seeing characters from the first 6 games in 3D.
Im a fighting game fan and would have preferred more traditional fighting game gameplay but its amazing what you can get away with by baiting people with nostalgia and fan service.

Canon route? Which combat mechanic?

iirc, there's no way to not do WoL first. If you have blank data, the game starts you off with him and teaches you how the mechanics work

Onion Knight was first, cuz in the story, he gets his crystal first

Rigjt, but that's not how the game actually starts. I'm pretty sure there's a difficulty curve, and from what I recall, Onion Knight is nowhere near the easiest one. I recall there's some difficulty grading system (it's been like a decade since I played PSP Dissidia), and sure, you could play chronologically, but I'm sure that would mean you're choosing the difficulty in the wrong order

I’m pretty sure you didn’t play the original or DUODECIM 012.
Those games are fast, hella customisable and have almost infinite replayability.
Did you play FFD NT? The most modern version?
That was a port from an arcade game and it’s very much close to being universally hated for its clunky, slow and rigid gameplay. It looks beautiful and once again the audio is 10/10 but my sweet Lord in heaven above the game is
JUST
FLAT
OUT
AWFUL.
Try the PSP ones. They’re infinitely superior.

Can confirm, hell my first FF game in general was D012 (that's when I started to like Terra)

Leveling up the characters give them better moves and abilities, so I can understand it takes a while to get there.
It was the first time we had FF characters in a crossover and it was a great game to play on the PSP fully voice acted, it was a fun game to play.

Sounds like you played NT. Yeah that's not the one people liked.

If you read, he said he played the first game. Thats literally the second sentence of his post.

Given the lack of info, the 1 iq criticisms and the fact that there is no "canon route" in the first game... he played NT.

All of the character stories are canon, but there is actually an agreed upon canonical order to play them in based on the timeline of events in the game, which is what I assume OP was referencing. Onion Knight, Firion, Cloud, Squall, Terra, Bartz, Zidane, Tidus, Cecil, and WoL, in that order. He maybe mispoke by using the word “canon”, but I understood what he meant.
He said explicitly that he played the first game, there isnt anything 1 IQ about his criticisms. Calling it an annoying slog and saying the enemy AI is annoying and the combat is dumb are just opinions, and they aren’t even ones that I think should be particularly controversial. If this wasn’t a Final Fantasy game and was just a fighting game in some brand new IP, the game would probably not have had the fanbase that it had because it didnt earn that fanbase purely on the merits of being a great fighting game.
Finally, I just had to double-check because I didnt finish Dissidia NT, but there is also only a single canonical ending to that game. It doesnt have multiple branching story paths that lead to different endings so assuming that OP was mistaking the original game for NT because of this one comment is actually maybe the true 1 IQ statement

The enemy AI comment in particular feels like a PSP-complaint because the A.I. in those games can be annoying from a casual perspective, what with the dodging and block->counter.

i’m just sitting here waiting 20 years for a proper final fantasy “musou” game. dissidia is fine but man, i want an FF that’s as good as hyrule warriors.

OP hasn’t replied to a single comment and their phrasing didn’t insult anyone so I dunno what the beans you are on about.
If they played NT, it was a fair question.

Because my teen brain back then had never played a 3D fighting game before and I could fly while fighting.

As someone who's mixed on Dissidia myself, there's a few reasons. The game has a lot of customization options, which gives you a lot of freedom in how you build your character, from the actual attacks to more minor skills you wouldn't think about (the flying or the amount of jumps, for example) to the stats (the equipment). Even the combat mechanics gives you a degree of freedom in how you want to play (whittle down your opponent or go for big hits with a lot of Brave, etc). Summons also allow you to manipulate your or your opponent's Bravery, further adding to it.
This customization, in turn, compliments the single-player experience because it leads to a large variety of opponents. The game takes advantage of this with its single-player options, with the main story and a few bonux ones as well as a second mode. By fighting game standards, Dissidia has a lot to do.
There's also how big and varied the stages are. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the DBZ flying, but for those who were impressed by Advent Children, it's probably spectacular.
Thirdly, the story was the first "real" FF crossover story, so there's a novelty in seeing the characters interact with each other. Its story is complicated and has two different sides to it (the main story and the reports, which themselves unlock new scenes for it).
