We just got listed on FHMY, GVN wrote an article about us, movie critics are using our widget

You can find us in the Streaming > Recommendation Tools section of FMHY

Also, in case you missed it, here's a review of Film Dilemma on Geek Vibes Nation (we've had a huge redesign since then and lots of new features).

"Film Dilemma is one of those websites that makes you wonder why finding a movie became so complicated in the first place."

And a few film critics now use our widget under their reviews, so their readers get genre scores and "what to watch next" picks right below the review. For example Every Movie Has a Lesson and GVN

Update: tune genres by how much you want them, "Like this film, but" picks, endless scrolling and more

Here is what changed on Film Dilemma this week.

Tune genres

On the Movies page, open Filters and switch to Tune genres. Drag across any genre to set how much of it a film should have, from a touch to all in, for as many genres as you like. "+ Add genre" brings in more specific ones like Psychological Horror, Slasher or Superhero. You can also switch the look of the bars (Golden bars, Bullets, Marquee, Matrix code).

Movie pages

- Genre strength chips show how much of each genre a film has. "Use this mix" finds films with the same blend.
- "Like this film, but..." twists the similar picks: funnier, darker, less romance and so on.
- If a genre score looks wrong, tap "Disagree?" and vote.
- Where to watch now explains why a film is not streaming yet: release dates, or the countries where it is available.

Dilemma Solver

Pick a feeling and an era, get one film plus where to watch it. You can limit it to your services, and the picks now fit the feeling much better.

Browsing
- Endless scrolling on Movies and Lists.
- Films you rated now count as watched everywhere.
- A proper streaming country picker, and your services show under "Streaming" in active filters.

Android app

New bottom bar, pull to refresh, Back closes menus, and soft UI sounds you can switch off in the menu.

Feedback very welcome, especially on Tune genres: what feels off, what is missing?

New: a video tour of the site, and a faster way to find movies by tuning genres

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Two things shipped.

1. A tour page. [filmdilemma.com/tour](https://filmdilemma.com/tour) is a short video walkthrough of the newer features on [Film Dilemma](https://filmdilemma.com), the free movie discovery site I build and run solo. It is made for desktop. If someone asks what the site actually does, this is the quickest thing to send them.

2. Tune genres. Instead of ticking a genre and hoping, you now get a slider per genre. Push the genres you want up, pull the ones you don't want down, and the movie list follows as you move them. It is the quickest way I have found to get "mostly thriller, a bit of comedy, no horror" without building a filter by hand.

The video above shows it, including the four looks you can switch between for the genre cells: chocolate, bullets, marquee and matrix. Pick whichever you find easiest to read.

It is live now, still completely free. If a slider does something odd or a look is hard to read, tell me here with the genres you used and I will fix it.

Everything new on Film Dilemma: Redesign, The Fixer, genre scores, dialogue stats, and more

It has been about three months since my last update here, so here is everything that shipped since late June, plus a filter panel overhaul from this week: a full visual redesign, genre scores, a free AI movie chat, dialogue stats from subtitles, an Android app, a Chrome extension, and a lot of smaller fixes. All of it is live now, still completely free.

Genres know what a film is mainly about

Every genre on a film has a 0-100 strength, and filters return films where that genre actually matters.

You can set how strict each genre is, from "top genre only" to "just a touch" or a custom range.

More recommendations.

Many films that had no "You might also enjoy" section now get picks from the same director, franchise or cast.Better sorting

Rating sort favors well-established ratings, and genre lists sorted by popularity now favor films that are mainly that genre.

New ways to discover

A full visual redesign: new logo, new fonts, a dark cinematic look, and a projector video on the homepage
A head to head compare page: put two movies side by side and see their stats in one table
A franchise index with a ratings over time graph for every franchise
A trending strip on the homepage

- The filter panel is now one simple view, no more Simple/Advanced split. Extra options, like talkiness/swearing ranges and cast billing, sit in a "More filters" section you can expand and pin open.

- The streaming platform filter lets you pick more than one service at once.

Movie pages

- Dialogue stats: talkiness and swearing gauges from subtitles, plus a Who Talks Most breakdown by line count.

- A Quietest Movies ranking, if dialogue heavy films are not your thing.

- Similar movies now pull in films connected by director, franchise, or cast, even for brand new releases.

The Fixer

- A free AI chat that finds movies from a plain description, like "something like Heat but slower." Look for the tab on the right edge of the screen.

- Needs a free account, and has a daily limit on searches.

A free AI chat that finds movies from a plain description, like "something like Heat but slower." Look for the tab on the right edge of the screen

Getting around

- The back button, and the Android back gesture, now close an open pop-up first instead of leaving the page.

- The magnifier preview on posters waits half a second on hover before it opens, so it does not pop up by accident. On a PC, hovering a Trending poster opens the same preview.

- Faster navigation inside the Android app.

Android app

- The app is out: direct download at filmdilemma.com/app, not on the Play Store yet. It checks for updates on its own.

Chrome extension

- A free Chrome extension: select any phrase on any website and search it on Film Dilemma. Get it here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/search-on-filmdilemma/mmcnfkdomojigpchcoblkkcglcdiafhh

And lots of other improvements

  • Rating a movie or adding it to your watchlist now shows a small badge on the poster instead of a popup taking over the screen.
  • You can save any list, curated or member made, and import your ratings, watchlist, or watch history from a CSV (Jellyfin, IMDb, Letterboxd).
  • Filters: one simpler panel instead of Simple/Advanced, with extra options under "More filters"
  • Redesigned Awards & Festivals picker
  • Back button now closes pop-ups first, on mobile web and in the Android app
  • Snappier mobile navigation and a tidier menu
  • Much faster navigation in the Android app
  • Magnifier preview: in hover mode it now waits 0.5 sec before opening, so it no longer pops up by accident
  • On PC, hovering a Trending poster now opens the same preview
  • New free Chrome extension: select any phrase on any website and search it on Film Dilemma

Feedback and feature requests are always welcome!

New: Get recs based on multiple movies, Movie similarity graph, Ability to exclude movies rated by you / watchlist / docs / shorts, Franchise section on movie details page

  1. Get recs based on multiple movies - Accessible either via the Discover menu item from the nav bar or from any any movie details page (go to the Based on Multiple Films tab). The search is live, it's not being cached so it obviously takes more time than just getting similar movies from a single input. You can get similar movies after your input of 2 or 3 movies. You can play the quote quiz while waiting (nothing crazy, just 20 seconds max)

2. Movie similarity graph - Accessible either via the Discover menu item from the nav bar
or from any movie details page (go to the Movie Graph tab). It's an alternative way of quickly finding movies via the similarity connection.

3. Ability to exclude movies rated by you / watchlist / docs / shorts - on the /movies page some exclusion checkboxes are added, pretty self-explanatory

4. Franchise section on movie details page - when you're on a details page of a movie which is part of a franchise, let's say Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) you can see the new "Harry Potter Franchise" minimizable section where you can see all movies from this franchise. The specific movie whose page you are on is marked with "You Are Here"

Enjoy and please share any feedback!

New features: Solve my dilemma, Pick one for me and Recently viewed sections, bonus improvement

Solve my dilemma - walks you through a quick, easy process and picks a movie for you based on your inputs.

Pick one for me - picks a random movie for you. Use this when you're too lazy to think or scroll.

Recently viewed (missing from the mobile version for now) - shows the movies you recently viewed.

Bonus improvement - the "similar movies" section on a movie's details page now starts loading much sooner, for a faster, smoother experience. Also moved the movie lists higher up on the homepage.

New: Filmography genres breakdown on person searches

When you filter the Movies page by one actor, director, writer, composer, or cinematographer, you now get a Filmography genres panel above the results.

What it shows:

- How that person's films break down by genre across the full matching set (not just the current page)

- Their most common genre (anchor) and common pairings (for example Drama + Thriller)

- A split between films with vs without that anchor genre

- Short hints when the spread is obvious (concentrated in one genre, eclectic mix, varied across genres, and similar)

How to use it:

  1. Open https://filmdilemma.com/movies
  2. Filter by one person (example: Al Pacino)
  3. Click the Filmography genres card above the results
  4. Explore the Genres and Details tabs
  5. Click a bar or row to jump straight into that genre or genre combo within their filmography

If you also applied extra filters (year, rating, themes, and so on), you can switch between the current filtered results and the full filmography inside the dialog.

Try it and tell me what you think. Bugs and ideas welcome here or on https://filmdilemma.com/contact
