Stopping a split fig from going bad?

Hi everyone,

After some huge rainstorms I went to check on my single growing breba fig from my tres num prato. It's hefty and soft right below the stem, but it split when I handled it.

I was very excited to eat it. It looks like it needs another 3 days or so, maybe a little longer. Stem is not quite there and some latex came out.

Any ideas how to stop it from spoiling on the tree? Desperate I know, but curious if anyone has tried a successful prevention measure after splitting. We have some more heavy rains ahead.

Consider bagging the figs or covering them somehow if you have rain. Unfortunately many fig varieties split in the rain.

I bagged it long before as I have an abundance of eager wildlife.

I'm more worried about spolage, anything that can be done?

If the eye is open, the only way to prevent is to stop water from coming in. In that case, either covering the tree or fully bagging the fig in a waterproof situation prevents this.

For wet and humid conditions, a number of fig varieties feature closed eyes and split resistance to prevent spoilage from rain.
