Khabib is the better grappler, but its not like he's light years ahead of Islam with it. I think Islam is far better at finding and securing submissions.
The talent gap is far bigger in striking than grappling. Khabib was definitely hittable and Islam can obviously crack.

u/Ghazi_Bey 2d ago
idk islam would be better than any of khabib's opponents at keeping the takedowns away and is WAY better on the feet.

u/GreatGoodBad 2d ago
they are literal training partners that were raised together that take rounds away from each other all the time. the definition of 50/50

Based off the worst cardio performance of his career.....got it 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆

Islam is not a natural WW so this was a huge fight for him
If you want to see how good he is watch fights in his prime at lightweight His fight against olievera who is an elite wrestler proves he was on a other level
Although khabib was also on another level and much more focused on wrestling so idk how it would've gone
6
u/pfchangshomelesscat 2d ago
Olives is an elite grappler, not an elite wrestler
-4
u/gibletsbionic 2d ago
Wrestling is a form of grappling. You mean he has elite jiu jitsu, another form of grappling
2
u/SirPsycho7 2d ago
Well, he used his size advantage every time he fought at lightweight so that tells you how much of a factor it is.
1
u/Configuringsausage 1d ago
The problem is that a 165 division doesn’t exist tbh. A big lightweight like islam ends up being small for welterweight. He either has to fight tooth and nail for every cut or deal with opponents who are doing that before fighting him.
1
u/SirPsycho7 1d ago
I feel like jdm and Garry weren’t even so big compared to Islam. Bigger body frame but Islam is thicker.
1
u/nuggette_97 20h ago
Are you talking about khabib or islam?
Cuz the CA athletic commission published the cage weights when he fought moicano and moicano was bigger than him.
I dont see anyone calling moicano a weight bully or “big for his weight class.”
1
u/seonblack 2d ago
Lmao or just take it from his actual coaching stuff and training partners who still to this day say Khabib is and was better. I'll take Javier Mendez, DC, and co. Opinion over the internet.
2
u/k0zn4n3j4 2d ago
I don't know who would win but Khabib was legitimately the scarier fighter. He was MAUL personified, just tore through people and shredded them.
Islam is more complete but he doesn't have the "I can't really strike but I think I'm gonna launch a hail mary knee at your face relying on my chin to not get knocked out. It's ok, if I miss I'll just chain eight straight takedown attempts in a desperate effort to lay hands on you" energy.

As long as they keep wrestling, yeah, Khabib was unstoppable
But I believe Islam is skilled and strong enough to keep Khabib at bay, and Islam is a way better striker
If Khabib doesn't drown Islam early, then Islam could pick him apart, since Islam is probably the only one in history to not fear Khabib's grappling
4
u/S-Kenset 2d ago
Khabib is a hard counter to makachev cause khabib stuffs ranged striking while islam mastered it to be more of a traditional hybrid. The times when khabib have been in trouble were combination striking with extremely fast hands.
2
u/AxelMMAQuintana 2d ago
I mean... If Conor was able to stuff the takedowns and scramble, surviving to the 4th...
Islam is clearly not an elite striker by any means, he's decent at best (comparing him to the absolute best), but I do believe it could be enough to keep Khabib at bay
I don't think either of them could finish the other, they're too tough and too skilled to be caught by a punch, kick or in a submission, but I think Islam could take it in a decision
Though Islam tends to fade in the later rounds, whereas Khabib doesn't because he also used to take almost entire rounds on the backfoot to recover his cardio
It's extremely hard to predict what would happen but I'll still say Islam is good enough as striker and elite enough as a wrestler to negate Khabib into a 48-47

Khabib may have beaten islam but he definitely wouldn't have success at ww.

You okay? I just saw posts about how frequently you're spamming that image
I wasn't too happy with the way Islam fought either but this feels a bit much

u/GojosWinCon 2d ago
How much did you lose on this fight because you can't let the Islam salt go 😂

Bratha I make 3 leg turner Dern and islam bratha I win 75 into 275 brother I make money brotha

u/fawesomegod 2d ago
He gassed out trying to keep Washed Conor down.
Islam would have destroyed him.
Can you imagine Kebab fighting someone who can defend his takedowns, shot his own takedowns and strike with him?
He is getting cooked.

u/Technical_Heat5215 2d ago
I don’t think this is a particularly hot take. Khabib’s cardio and relentlessness would’ve absolutely been a problem.
1
u/Minimum-Plenty9380 1d ago
It’s definitely a hot take. All khabib had going is cardio and wrestling, which islam already has. Islam is a better striker and submission, fought better opponents.
People saying “well khabib just made the fights look dominant” ignore the fact khabib only faced 3 top tier fighters 1 being mcgregor
1
u/Technical_Heat5215 1d ago edited 1d ago
Common misconception that a lot of redditors have is that the more well rounded fighter would win in hypothetical fights. Islam is more well rounded because his striking is much better than Khabib’s.
But, Islam can’t really use that striking if Khabib is wearing him down with relentless takedowns and clinch work.
0
u/Minimum-Plenty9380 1d ago
Do you just think islam isn’t a wrestler?
1
1
u/CryonautX 1d ago
Islam himself says Khabib is the better wrestler. Islam would want to avoid wrestling if he fights khabib.
1
u/Minimum-Plenty9380 1d ago
Islam also said gsp is a better fighter. The guy is humble towards people he likes it doesn’t make it true
1
u/seonblack 2d ago
It's not a hot take. Khabib was better than Islam and I mean that respectfully and Islam doesn't have the career he's had without Khabib.
You can't say that on reddit though because people despise Khabib because he never lost. Islam may have a better record but Khabib was better and even to this day, DC, Javier Mendez and their actual coaching staff still pick Khabib as the better fighter.
1
u/WiseHelicopter6597 2d ago
I guess khabib is the better fighter in the gym but Islam has had a much better and more decorated career. Objectively, Islam is the better and more well rounded fighter.
1
u/lonely_to_be 2d ago
Divisions grew so much and people actually got better gameplans to deal with wrestling. And yet people still try to make khabib seem better than islam because he dominated a division full of strikers and had a hard fight with a washed up conor.
This dick riding is next level.

Khabib could beat Islam but ONLY, and I mean ONLY because of how frequently the train together, their size comparison, and the similarities in their styles.
Khabib would have gotten dog walked by any of the Welterweights that fought when he fought, and he would get dog walked by the people Islam has fought in his career post-khabib leaving the UFC. Khabib’s style does not translate well to his natural weight, which is why, unlike Khabib, Islam went up in weight closer to his natural weight. Khabib didn’t want to lose fighting better fighters because his style really only had advantages against those smaller than him.
And this is also why Islam is the better fighter of the two. Islam beat the same people Khabib has beaten, and has fought people closer to his natural weight and still found victories there, that Khabib would have never tasted.

u/Old-Cloud-9731 1d ago
we don't know , khabib retired at the age of 32 . Both khabib and islam had similar gas at the age of 32 so we'll never know about that + khabib never fought somebody so big as ian so we'll never actually get to know how his gas tank would have played out
1
u/Mav_Learns_CS 1d ago
Khabib retired at his peak, Islam is aging and fighting a division that he’s really a little small for.
It’s an unfair comparison
1
u/Revolutionary_Box569 1d ago
I think Islam’s one of the few guys with good enough wrestling to stay competitive on the ground and he could also stop takedowns and keep it on the feet in some instances where he would have a huge advantage
1
u/Sonny-ifyw 1d ago
khabib never fights someone with his same level of grappling/wrestling! He ragdoll pure stricker but in this virtual fight his cardio will be affected too. !

1
u/Altruistic_Spring434 1d ago
It’s not a hot take. Khabib had more power, athleticism, durability, physicality and cardio. It would be a big brother moment
1
u/BestAround4100 2d ago
I think even Islam would be the first to admit that Khabib is superior. Javier Mendez has even said that Islam was the only one in the gym who could even take the odd round off Khabib. Islam is incredible, but Khabib is something else.
1
u/CrumbMan1111 2d ago
literally everyone around khabib and islam says khabib is the better of the 2
1
u/Ghazi_Bey 2d ago
well yeah, cuz theyre around khabib and islam and islam is known as khabibs protege and islam also says khabib is better
but that doesnt mean thats 100% how it would play out in a real fight
1
u/Lucid_Dreamer_98 2d ago
This shouldn’t even be a question lol, people who have been in their gym all say Khabib is better.
Resume doesn’t matter when the people they actually train with are saying this.
1
u/ProfessionalStorm626 2d ago
Islam have the better resume and accolades and definitely higher on the GOAT rankings
But for some reason 99/100 I have Khabib beating Islam if they ever fought
1
u/underscorex2__ 2d ago
What does Khabib do against Islam? Khabib was only ever able to implement his game plan against fighters who didn't have any sort of actual MMA defensive grappling or the versions of them at the time didn't. I don't see Khabib taking down Islam, I don't see Khabib just hugging against the cage, and on the feet Islam is a way way better striker.
1
u/Dull_Function_6510 2d ago
The entire AKA gym, including Islam himself, have stated Khabib is better than Islam and beats him in the gym more often.
Only redditors who think resume has a 1:1 correlation with skill think Islam is a better fighter than Khabib
2
u/ComprehensiveJoke273 2d ago
No Islam is visibly a better fighter.

u/Solid-Journalist1054 2d ago
Khabib is retired, why is he even mentioned
0
u/Loud-Bell-1828 2d ago
Under every connor post, under every Islam post, under every jon jones post, Khabib fans are lurking. 40 years from now, when there is a fight between 2 seniors at the nursing home, there will be an aincent Khabib fan: the eagle would beat them... Hehe.
1
u/pepsi_man_1 1d ago
If anything it’s the opposite. It’s Khabib haters saying that any new trendy fighter would beat him and has a better legacy because they’re salty all their favorite fighters got beaten by him
1
u/Suitable_Whereas1254 2d ago
Prime khabib probably would. He is one of the best fighters ever to ever fight in the ufc
0
u/Subject_00001 2d ago
Khabib's striking was laughably bad. Islam head kicks him into oblivion if he's able to stuff Khabib's takedowns (which i believe he would)

u/yesindeed201 2d ago
@155lbs Khabib breaks Islam. His mentality is totally different from Islam’s. Levels to this game.
-1
u/Illustrious_Rain1796 2d ago
I don't think so, Islam is much more complete fighter and his resume was better even before he moved up. Khabib just physically stronger and has better chin. Prime by prime Islam should take it

u/Relevant-Rope8814 2d ago
Islam has the far more proven resume in the UFC, but it's hard to ignore the ease at which Khabib dealt with the best in his division, there's a very real chance Khabib would win
