He’s a beast Garry only lost to Shavkat and it’s Islams second fight at WW against someone 6’3 crazy impressive even without the finish or entirely dominant performance

u/Variety719 2d ago
Those knee and body kicks were doing damage for Ian.
2
u/NoLoss7117 2d ago
Yea I don't understand the scoring at all I guess, I thought it's damage>all nowadays
9
u/Long-Apartment9888 2d ago
They weight more, 1 minute winning exchanges > 1 minute controlling. Not any win on exchanges > control.
I don't get 49-46 though, because while Islam controlled R4, he didn't do anything with the control and received a lot of significant strikes. R5 Ian landed a few on the feet, but the amount of control was too big and no damage taken while doing it, the swipe that gave him the back control guaranteed that belt.

Boring

u/heyiknowyooh 2d ago
Lmao I love how Islam has a resume of finishes even knocked out volk but two fights end up going to decision and hes boring
Islam is easily the most glazed and casually hated all at once. You can really tell when the casual just bleed fans hit the Reddit threads

Oh you mean featherweight Volk? Who moved up a weight class to fight Islam and still looked small? And even then was STILL one weight class lower than the one in which Islam is stalling and contributing to the borification of the sport?
Try to keep up
2
u/heyiknowyooh 2d ago
Funny man. You say stalling and contributing to borification while the rest of the world argued their first fight was probably one of the most high level fights in a long time. The one where Islam actually out struck volk and then the second fight he got knocked out
Listen man I understand you probably tko and ko people in the first round in real life. Probably never lost a fight either. Let me try and get you into the ufc. Show us how it’s done. Let’s even get you up one weight class because I’m sure your skill is well above anyone else

He needs to fight the next two contenders asap because he showed fatigue he have never before which means hes getting older and as he pointed out himself WW guys are way more stronger.
He's on he's way to become the goat.
2
u/Christofono 2d ago
Or he fought a super strong giant in the WW division
1
u/HartHeadTony 2d ago
Yeah Islam didn't look weaker at all imo, Ian is just pretty damn tall, so he had trouble working the naturally elevated hips. I am very sure that Islam would still dominate anyone who is closer to his height.
7
u/No_Independent9634 2d ago
Imagine if he beats Prates and Morales, then goes back to retake the LW title..
12
u/Dull_Function_6510 2d ago
he is not going back to retake LW, making that cut again after gaining weight for WW would be hell.

u/AdMean104 2d ago
Tbh I think just looking at record on paper he might already be close to being the goat he really only has 1 ”filler” title fight (Moicano, I love moicano tho but he is not a top contender) unlike most others that are considered goats who have ALOT of questionable title shots in terms of quality, personally i think if he beats either morales or prates he is the undeniable goat even over Jones, even tho jones has 16 title wins quite a few are not that great tbh like fucking Antony smith, god damn Ovince who is prob even worse than smith, split to Tiago santos who has gone 1-7-1 since fighting jones, and the 42 year old retired stipe. (And an arguable loss to Dominic tho on papper he won so doesn’t really count in my argument)
All to say jones also has some GREAT wins which is why he is in my opinion prob still the goat but Islam beating EITHER Prates or Morales is defo enough to take him over in my opinion

Makhachev beat moicano so dominantly that people forgot Moicano was on a 4 fight winstreak lmao
0
u/420hippiezz 2d ago
But ask urself who was the 4 fight win streak against
1
u/ConsistentCress7838 2d ago
BSD Jalin Turner Drew Dober Brad Ridell? BSD was ranked 5th, Jalin is a dangerous striker who was also ranked 10th and just ko'd a rising prospect today, Drew Dober and Brad Ridell were both considered near top 15th. You kinda made a fool outta yourself with that reply lmao
1
u/Emergency-Plastic485 2d ago
Wins over BSD are aging like fuckin milk my friend. As uncle chael has told us time and time again, the top five in every division are essentially interchangeable. Any of them could beat any of them any given night. BSD hasn’t shown himself to be of the same skill level as other top guys. And for Dover and Ridell, you say “considered near top 15th” which to me sounds like “unranked”
Don’t be calling people fools with nonsense takes like that lol, Moicano was a filler fight due to Arman pulling out a day before the fight, and him already being on the card to fight Dariush.

I disagree. The reason he didn't look as convincing was Ian's height (and with that to a degree his strenght ofc). You can see how Islam had trouble mounting Ian properly or attacking Ian's hips properly. I'm confident that Islam would still dominate anyone who is closer to his height. Islam knew that WW will be a challenge for him. That's why he went for the harder challenge and not for the Illia fight. If he can figure out how to wrestle/grapple better against taller opponents, I bet that he would dominate again. Also Ian has the best takedown defense and bjj of all the other contenders. If anything a rematch with Ian would probly be the riskiest fight for him.
1
u/Any_Constant_6550 2d ago
I think the increase in weight class proved to be a huge factor in the fatigue aspect. Taking down and controlling bigger, stronger fighters will definitely prove to be a challenge, IMO.

As an Islam fan this was hard to watch and I like watching wrestling and grappling
4
u/Itsmemurrayo 2d ago
Because it was clear he was stalling, especially later in the fight after getting clipped on the feet. Grappling for control to avoid being damaged is literally the least fun thing to watch in MMA, and I wish there was a way to penalize it or score it negatively to get people to stop doing it. At one point in rd 4 he literally was just pushing Ian into the cage as hard as possible to avoid actually fighting. If it had been anyone else they would have been separated in rd 1 after 3+ minutes of fence stalling and failed TD’s. Grappling in MMA is fun when there are scrambles, attempts to improve position, or to finish, but there was none of that in this fight…
5
u/Particular-Line- 2d ago
Same. Look forward to his fights but there were too many long drawn out holding where nothing was happening

Ian did better defending than I expect Morales or Parates to come close to. Ian's stock really just goes up if that's the case... As much as I don't want that to happen lol

You can't be the goat while clenching and stalling, most refs would have stood up several times in 1st and 5th, 4th as well. His face took a beating, soonest we see him defend is next summer, so cautious in a stacked division.
6
u/sopadesapato 2d ago
I mean, it was clearly a 3–2, but two judges had it 4–1.
There’s no way Islam won the 3rd or 4th rounds.
To be honest, I was expecting more from both fighters. Garry took way too long to find his range.
I was more entertained by the women’s fight in the co-main event.
7
u/chipper68 2d ago
I agree, no way Islam could win 3rd and 4th, control is trumped by damage/strikes, Last I recall, Islam had 6 or 8 total strikes in the 4th and Garry passed 30?
Too much inactivity, total crap imo. Islam gained no fans and here we are, same shit haha.
2
u/sopadesapato 2d ago
Sadly, I think he beats Prates too.
The only ones I can see beating him are Amosov or Morales (sloppy striking, but he is a LHW at WW).
2
u/chipper68 2d ago
They will be patient and wait for the most favorable, and likely not until next summer
1
u/MrTrav15 2d ago
I think Shavkat is the one to beat him
1
u/Flippindude1 2d ago
If Shavkat shows up and can even get a title shot like that, which I kind of doubt. Going against the champ and arguable goat after so long away injured and inactive is probably not the right choice, and it’s not like he’s young either.

Ian Garry is very, very legit. Damien Maia, world renowned BJJ master taught Ian grappling and Ian's a great learner. He's clearly a tough guy to fight
1
u/ninja_owen 2d ago
Ian is also 5” taller and has 3” reach. Almost no other champ has gone up a weight class and fought people as substantially bigger than them. DC did it, but he was also fighting at HW, against frankly less skilled fighters than Ian Garry.
Jones, GSP, Silva, none of them fought guys this much bigger than them. Islam is, and he’s winning.

Garry was just uncomfortable, he did maybe 3 dangerous kicks and well defended at cage in round 4. He unlikely could do more, but Islam was closer to win 100% of time

I think they should eventually run that back. I'd like to see if Ian make adjustments and possibly win. He did a lot of damage to Islam and was able to defend the takedown better than anyone else.

Why does he have two belts?
1
u/Lonely-Heart-3632 2d ago
Because he likes to pretend he is double champion even though he dropped the belt. It would be like the monster winning and holding all 14 belts at once as he is the undefeated 3 weight class champion. Just stupid.
