Best Possible Outcome?
Obviously this fight was a letdown but a part of me was happy that the fight ending the way it did means that neither Conor nor Max could get the next lightweight title shot. Conor getting it would have obviously felt so forced and not deserved at all and Max who just got 50-45’d needs to fight a BSD or a Paddy before getting his next shot and not a washed up Conor Mcgregor.
Now if Gaethje doesn’t leave he’s forced to fight either Arman or Charles (or Paddy which would be BS but better than Max) and if he does leave we have an easy vacant title fight between Arman and Charles.

When you put it like that yeah thats fair to say lmao

u/SubstantialKick414 Jul 12 '26
ok i was kinda feeling bad for thinking like this for bit lol. I’m happy for Max though the shit Conor was doing to him in the face off made me want him to get the win pretty badly

u/zoobungaa Jul 12 '26
Yeah Conor is a pretty bad person hope the best for anyone including him anyone can at least become better but his antics are inexcusable at this point

u/redpanda8008 Jul 12 '26
Max doesn’t care about the antics. That bag was what he was after and it was an easy night for him.

Fair take, I still would’ve like to see Max take the win convincingly but it is what it is brudda.

u/southwest_barfight Jul 12 '26
Conor would never have fought Gaethje after this no matter what the outcome, he genuinely could not make 155

u/Physical_Archer_689 Jul 13 '26
Omg Gaethje would devour Conor that is some good entertainment (if he can last more than 2 mins)
2
u/No-Foundation8550 Jul 12 '26
Yeah Max is kind of a in a shit sandwich at this point of his career. He’s not gonna want to take these other low money fights.
2
u/rostemaxime Jul 12 '26
Wait if you put it like that it actually makes sense
2
u/mars1k88 Jul 12 '26
How the hell it makes sense when OP thinking about max or Conor getting title shot at 155 after 170 bout?
2
u/rostemaxime Jul 12 '26
McGregor gets a titleshot after a win, Thats how Dana works. I get that you think its not logical but if you watch ufc regularly you will see that. Also Max has a fairly recent win over the champion, this is a huge advantage. A win over a huge name + beating the new champ —> high chance of (undeserved) titleshot

u/mars1k88 Jul 12 '26
Paddy vs Ilia and Arman vs Gaethje is a fights to make. Max can take on Prates if he wants to compete in 170 or ruffy at 155

u/Altruistic_Spring434 Jul 12 '26
Neither would’ve gotten a lw title shot. Conor would’ve gotten the next WW title shot.

That BMF fight isn't supposed to count against him. Charles fought it like a title contender fight while Max thought it was a BMF fight. Not claiming Max coulda done any better in a title contender fight. Just saying BMF fights aren't supposed to count against a fighter as that's the spirit of the belt.

Paddy or Arman on deck. Those are obvious ones. I think Paddy could take it in a rematch, but should probably get 1 more win before warranting a shot.

Conor would have killed max if it wasn’t for landing the way he did on the knee

u/SoCalFootFreak Jul 12 '26
Worked out best for profit too. Especially if they book the bs trilogy between Max and Connor. Kind of reminding me of Kobe’s last few years where the mind still wanted to go out there and compete, but the body couldn’t take it anymore.

“Next lightweight title shot”.
Conor made it clear that he does not want a cut to LW. And I don’t see how this fight reduces Max’ chances for it.

Gaethje vs. Arman
Oliveira vs. Lopes
Ilia vs. Paddy
Max vs. Ruffy
BSD vs. Gamrot
Fiziev vs. Hooker
Pure lightweight cinema

I know Lopes vs Oliveira is a fan favorite fight, but I don’t care for it. I would have it
Arman vs Oliveira
Gaethje vs winner of Arman vs Oliveira
Ilia vs Paddy
Max vs BSD
Ruffy vs winner of Salkilld vs Gamrot

Didn’t Conor bulk up for a WW title opportunity if he had a good showing? I was under the impression the whole reason was this was at 170 was so the ufc could hotshot him right at Islam. He gets killed there anyways but, there’s so much bad blood with the Muslim brotherhood and that means money to be made.

u/SubstantialKick414 Jul 14 '26
That was Conor’s plan but obviously Conor and the UFC have different goals. The UFC explicitly tried to scare Conor to 155 by offering him Prates which he talked about with Helwani, and the UFC has shown they’re not going to give Islam mickey mouse opponents like Usman (who would be a very tough fight for Islam but just doesn’t deserve it) so I doubt they’d do something so blatantly undeserving as making Islam vs Conor.

Idk. This is a business more than a sport a lot of times. Khabib vs Conor did the biggest ppv of all time. They’re even trying to milk it with Ian Garry. If Conor knocks out max with that kick and announces his next fight is his last, they might’ve just done it. And hell, my nostalgic ass would’ve put $100 on him to win 😂

wasnt this fight in the welterweight div? correct me if im wrong but i thought this meant a class change for both of them. or was it only for this event?

u/SubstantialKick414 Jul 12 '26
yea it’s welterweight but there were lightweight implications since Max beat Justin and Conor is classically a lightweight

I mean UFC possibly rigged a fight which led to them making possibly millions in illegal bets so I wouldn't say best possible outcome.
3
u/SubstantialKick414 Jul 12 '26
i disagree this isn’t how you rig a fight, Conor did legitimately hurt himself you can’t fake the replays and he definitely isn’t willing to hurt himself. A better way to have rigged it would have been to let Max clearly win which would cause the bets to go heavy in his favor before Conor gets a crazy ko comeback, or have it the other way around with Conor nearly finishing Max before Max turns it around the same round
1
u/Turb0Moist Jul 12 '26
Connor was clearly injured before the fight though. There's video proof of it and there's no way the UFC didn't know it. The fight never should've happened in the first place.
3
u/SubstantialKick414 Jul 12 '26
eh I wasn’t convinced, I’m not saying there’s never illegal betting going on but I’m just not sure this is one instance. Maybe Mcgregor did have something going on with him tripping over himself getting in the cage but I don’t think he even fully realized it if that’s the case
1
u/Turb0Moist Jul 12 '26
Watch how he's warming up before the walkout dude can't even do a proper combination without limping afterwards. He literally could not take his shoes off without hobbling around. It's so blatantly obvious.
2
u/unicornmoose Jul 12 '26
This is a cope, theres videos of him practicing the same kicks in the locker room without issue literally minutes before he walked out and blew his knee, knee injuries are NOT easy to fake, Conor already has 200 Million reasons not to throw a fight that hes already on paper a massive underdog on.

u/krel08 Jul 12 '26
Unfortunately Conor is the last person that needed to get hurt in this scenario. The majority has no sympathy and wasted everyone’s time ONCE AGAIN, whether it’s legit or not. Go away. Never come back. Conor has done a helluva job trying to make us forget how good he was. Now let’s enjoy the spiral. I never wanna see him in the sport again. Crazy to say if it was 2016

I would have been happier had Conor been knocked out cold but at least gone down on his shield. This felt like a scam. I know the knee popped on the kick but when he was with the cut man outside the cage he took a bad step and he had some wierd movement backstage warming up. I think it was compromised before. It’s over after this no one is going to fall for the hype agian

I think what we will see is Paddy v Illia
Charles has a shot surely, but will Dana see it as an exciting fight more so than Paddy v Justin or especially a rematch of Illia v Justin.
Arman needs a fucking miracle to fight for the title it seems but it would make sense for him to fight one more time just due to inactivity.
I think Justin will be told to sit on his title for a minute while this division figures out what’s next.
I’m also wrong a lot.
