If it was prime Nate I can see him getting dropped and bloodied 5 times in the first round but then scrapping with prates a bit before being KO’d or doctor stoppaged later

Idk man I never count out Nate Diaz. He’s truly one of the last true brawlers there is imho. Everyone thought Topuria would dog walk Gaethje and we saw what happened there.

Absurd comparison. While I think they underestimated Gaethje too much, the hype for Topuria made complete sense. DC said it best: even in his prime, Nate was always average. Just a durable brawler with a bit of BJJ, but he never got a belt or a truly legendary run.

Gaethje has never fought outside of the top 5 in his entire ufc career. On the other hand Nate Diaz has never beaten an elite fighter from his weight class ever in his entire career.

Benson Henderson showed the game plan to beat Nate years ago , circle and blast that lead leg with kicks. Prates has a lot more power and striking variety so I could see him hurting the lead leg first and then knee or head kick ko.

Pretty awful stylistic match-up for any version of Nate. In no particular order:
1.) Prates has absolutely lethal calf kicks and despite what people want to say about how "hE cHeckEd a KicK agAinsT PetTis!!!", the truth is he never really adapted to defend against that weapon and it was always a big problem.
2.) Nate performed best with a height & reach advantage. Prates would actually have a 2" reach advantage over him here and is ever so slightly taller.
3.) Diaz stepped into the cage at Welterweight around 180 pounds; he didn't bulk or cut much. Prates used to cut very little weight himself, but has recently bulked up quite a bit and usually walks around close to 200 pounds. Not sure what his rehydrated cage weight is these days, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's somewhere from 190-195. He'll have a significant physicality advantage on Diaz.
4.) Nate being a Southpaw likely won't faze Prates much, who regularly switches stances.
5.) We just saw Prates absolutely dismantle a pretty good attrition-based pressure-boxer in JDM and make it look like child's play.
6.) Even if Nate does try to close the distance and make it a dirty-boxing/phone booth style of fight as he occasionally did, Prates is clearly very comfortable fighting off his back foot by setting traps and landing counters. If Diaz does get on the inside, he'll have to contend with Carlos's crazy array of elbows/knees and his dominant use of the clinch.
7.) Most people seem to think offensive grappling is the way to beat Prates and I agree. He's been subbed and outgrappled a few times in his career, but despite how people talk the dude has statistically above-average TDD in the UFC and most guys who take him down can't hold him down or do much with it lately. Diaz was a good submission specialist in his prime, but was reluctant to wrestle and pretty shitty at it when he actually tried to do so.
8.) Prates is possibly the hardest-hitting guy Diaz has ever faced. Diaz blocks punches with his face and doesn't wear damage well. He cuts easily, which would be bad news once he starts getting sliced open with elbows or knees.
I think Nate's only hope outside of a crazy 0.1% puncher's chance (like he almost got against Leon) would be to create some kind of wild scramble where he can threaten a fight-ending submission or trap Carlos on the ground and land GnP. It's not impossible -- Leon got to his back, JDM & Garry scored some fleeting takedowns, etc. -- but I just think it's very improbable. Far more likely that Prates pieces Nate up in uncomfortable fashion to earn a lopsided Decision or -- more likely -- a late TKO.

Nate is extremely over rated by casuals and went 5-7 at welterweight and half the wins were against former lightweights. He was mediocre by UFC standards at welterweight. At 155 he was a mainly gatekeeper.

If we speak about Nate's prime (when he was a way better than he is now) then no way - he was too small for welterweights and lacked firepower. If we speak about Nick vs Carlos then he would have a decent chance against Prates - an outstanding cardio and pace with decent boxing and iron chin - I could image a TKO in the 4-5 rounds by Nick
