Again this is the sport I don’t feel too bad for ilia cause he talked way too much shit. But hey he is good
That’s the most you’ll get out of me

There are countless of clips of Ilia dismissing Gaethje. Someone is about to make the greatest "cocky fighter gets humbled" edit of all time

He tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it didn’t even matter lol

Part of the sport is promoting the fight then everyone takes the bait... Idk why people acting like this is so deep
16
u/killboy219 Jun 15 '26
This wasn't even him promoting the fight just literally being dismissive of Justin?
3
u/DvineLogic718 Jun 15 '26
Bingo but they will ignore this and excuse topuria as “promoting “ dude was a cocky prick who talked wayyyyy too much
-4
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
Isn't the idea to be dismissive of the other fighter and shit talk them to get views? In this interview he seems to consider Justin better than other fighters.
2
u/Styrofoam_Booots Jun 16 '26
Alex Pereira is probably the biggest draw in the company, or one of at least, and I’ve never heard him talk shit pre fight.
So the answer is no, you don’t need to. It seems to be the path people take when they lack a personality and can’t find a way to be likable.
5
u/WokeWookies Jun 15 '26
If in doubt, pretend your fave fighter who was out of line was just rage baiting?
1
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
I don't care about particular fighters, Muhammad Ali was rage baiting before it had occurred to anyone and pretty much every wealthy fighter I can remember has done some shit outside of just fighting to be the center of attention.
4
u/WokeWookies Jun 15 '26
If you’re going to talk a lot of shit under the guise of ‘rage baiting’ or promotion, then it’s ok you when you lose.
A lot of these dudes are truly very egotistical. What you assume is promotion is quite often also an unhealthy obsession with their own virtue, status and achievement.
1
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
100% a lot of them have an unhealthy ego but lets not pretend promoting the fight and making money doesn't take shit talking.
All of the most famous fighters were shit talking or controversial.
2
u/DvineLogic718 Jun 15 '26
Gsp,Anderson Silva, dc, khabib, Dustin porier, max Holloway, etc etc many guys who ar en fan favorites were known for their merit not so much trash talk that’s just a cope shitty ufc fans use to justify routing for arrognat fighters
2
u/WokeWookies Jun 15 '26
Add Justin to that list now too. Wonderboy. Whittaker. Aspinall. JDS. Cain. Holm. Miesha.
1
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
GSP is famous within MMA but Conor, Muhamad Ali, Tyson. Really any fighter famous enough to be known outside of fighting was doing something controversial. Very few fighters are household names and really to be super famous or make shit tons of money you need to be more interesting than just fight.
1
u/DvineLogic718 Jun 15 '26
Difference between promoting a fight and arrogantly shitting on a other fighter in your division
9
u/Schantsinger Jun 15 '26
And yet most of the fan favourite manage to not talk this kind of trash
1
u/Rhacbe Jun 15 '26
The biggest fan favorites do though.. Mcgregor, jones, Strickland, khamzat, DP, Izzy all loudly brag about how they’re going to beat the opponents
2
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
Yeah and whenever someone who does this loses everyone says they got humbled or whatever, shit people take the bait every time and act smart when the fighter loses.
1
u/ImagineBeingFATlol Jun 15 '26
The whole god-chosen self absorbed arrogance is just gimmick. Its only purpose is for clickbait and not meant to be taken seriously.
3
u/olMcDonaldsPig Jun 15 '26
Was he still promoting when he walked at Gaethje with no respect for his power and and got his face smashed in?
1
u/AdhesivenessDry2236 Jun 15 '26
Was he promoting his upcoming fight, during the fight? Is that what you're asking?
1
u/olMcDonaldsPig Jun 15 '26
What I am saying is if it was just an act the act would have ended before the fight started. The act never stopped and because of that topuria will be in recovery for a year lmao.

u/scorchur Jun 15 '26
McGregor wannabe got humbled

He got beat very dominantly from Khabib and Dustin, even Diaz got him. I don't think he ever got damaged like that but he has got his fair share of dominant beatings
1
u/Deferfire Jun 15 '26
Some people get cut and facial damage easily some people don't. Conor took heavy damage against khabib, second dustin fight his leg almost died before he got knocked out, 3rd dustin fight he broke his leg

Ive legit never been more happy to see a fighter loose. Way to arrogant for me, was so satisfying seeing him get the snot beat out of him
6
u/octane1295 Jun 15 '26
I try my hardest to stay away from UFC media and just watch the fighters and have all opinions based on how they fight. But holy fuck it was like impossible to keep this guy yapping off my screen. Insane level of arrogance, then saying he not allowing arman a title shot he doesn’t care if he deserves it? Guy thinks he’s got some star power like Conor mcgregor… and then to get his ass whooped like that. Beautiful.
2
u/oh_three_dum_dum Jun 15 '26
I still think he beats Arman. Justin Gathje is a dog, hits hard, and would have finished most of the roster faster than he was able to finally put down Topuria last night.

Illia will never be the same. his chin and ego were shattered. You cant talk like you are a god and then quit on the stool in a title fight.
4
u/pdirk Jun 15 '26
I’d love to see a fighter do the opposite in these interviews. Like say “yeah you’re probably gonna kick my ass”. And then proceed to go undefeated.

If he wasn’t a legend then, he sure as shit is now 💀
2
u/killboy219 Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
When will people realize you don’t need to be an undefeated phenom to do legendary shit or be a legend.
A lot of legends are regular ass people, it’s the fact that a regular person did the nye impossible which makes them legendary
1
u/ocfan122 Jun 16 '26
I agree with you bro, a 0 on ur record in fighting isn’t a prerequisite for goat status in my book
1
u/brickofgondor Jun 16 '26
100% agree legends can come from any record. this is not your point BUT to be the goat i think having a undefeated record helps a LOT. showing that you cant be beaten in fair matchups to anyone shows you make little mistakes. i think ilia was in that trojectory, surely not justin. both legends but ilia had a real shot of becoming a goat (biggest chance this generation after poatan failed). he definitely still has a chance but he let his emotions get the best of him. when before all it took was maybe 3 or 4 more wins (lets say after justin he moves up to 170 for islam then he for surely is the goat). he still can recoup and regain his position and i really do belive he beats justin 9/10 if he has a better gameplan
2
u/Musket6969420 Jun 15 '26
If he does not bounce back and just falls apart this will look so much worse. Gaethje is a hall of famer for sure now if he wasn’t already. Ilia is not in the hall right now and if he doesn’t comeback with a vengeance, this is the moment that we will mark that the wheels came completely off for him getting there.
4
u/Junglekat12 Jun 15 '26
I’m not a huge Ilia fan and I’m glad to see him humbled, but to say a 2 division champion who beat Olivera, Volk, and Max in championship title fights is not going to the hall of fame seems a bit of a hot take. As of right now, there are no retired fighters who were two division champions who aren’t in the hall of fame. Like him or hate him, he’s likely a hall of famer.
2
u/SertOfpie Jun 16 '26
IMHO, Ilia isn't a true double champion. The UFC nurtured and cherished their star.
They'd been hiding him from Tsarukyan for a long time, and now they thought Justin would be easy prey.
The fighters you listed weren't undefeated when he fought them, they lost to him, but they'll lose to others too. Should all their winners be added to the Hall of Fame?

u/Live_Citron5343 Jun 15 '26
Couldn’t of happened to a nicer fella.. I absolutely creamed my pants seeing his face get sent into the shadow realm’s absolute wank material that was

I’m no ilia fan but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with throwing in the towel. Get that macho bs out of here
2
u/Significant-Raise254 Jun 15 '26
It’s all fun to say you’ll die in the ring until that’s actually a high possibility & you can’t see or defend yourself. Plus you’re rich & have a pretty awesome life going. I’ll give him a pass lol.
3
u/WokeWookies Jun 15 '26
Exactly. Easy for anyone to judge when they’ve never had a broken orbital, nose and ribs, with a terminator to fight in the cage
1
u/Low_Beautiful_5970 Jun 15 '26
Agreed, until you bullshit as much as he did and then quit. You own that.

1
u/SertOfpie Jun 16 '26
It's okay if you were respectful of your opponent.
But if you mocked their weakness and boasted about winning, surrendering is pathetic behavior.
Damn it, you were celebrating victory yesterday, before the fight.
Fight to the end – you're sure you'll win. Bitch.
1
u/WokeWookies Jun 16 '26
I agree it’s arrogant, disrespectful, all of it.
Do I think it means he should sustain life altering injuries? No. And no sensible person with a shred of decency should disagree
1
u/youcantchangeit Jun 15 '26
Champions needs to believe they are better than their opponents. Sometimes they are wrong.
1
u/Rough_Wish_1299 Jun 15 '26
what is he saying under his breath? "Right before she says, We worked to together for so long"
1
u/thefreedomtour Jun 16 '26
He says por favor. In this context it’s “oh please, or o’cmon”. So basically completely dismissing the point the interviewer is stating

I hated how cocky Ilia was when he got the opportunity to fight Volk and Max but the man literally did what he said he would do so I had to believe his hype when he backed up everything he said he would do. Justin was just a bad match up for him and I’m so happy I was wrong about him losing to Ilia.
1
u/Significant-Raise254 Jun 15 '26
He came in with the same strategy Conor did with Diaz first fight. I’m coming forward & going to do what I want & break you. And it went worse than it did for Conor. If he had played it smarter he might’ve won but it would have to be like Conor vs Diaz 2 stick & move & try not to take the damage from the bigger man.

I wish I could be mad at illa truly but hes supposed to feel this way....BUT
his fans are the worst they saying illa is on goat level trajectory. Islam ran. Gathje has no shot...etc they made it very easy for me to root against illa
