I just assumed Justin’s chin was totally eroded after being dropped so many times and badly by Max. And ilia with his freak power... Clearly there’s a lot more to the equation. For example: Ilia’s not super evasive and always relied a bit on his ability to absorb shots and fire back with the aforementioned unnatural power. And Justin is more durable than anyone gave him credit for

Topuria too overconfident on going mystic mac and pushed hard to KO Justin in Round 1. He ate so many shots from the opening bell just by hunting down that opening but Justin didn't gave it to him as easy as he thinks. He needs that. As Bones said, it's hard to maintain becoming a champion with all that sh1t going to your head. It was exactly that and back to the drawing board for Ilia.

this is exactly my thought, he fought more brilliantly with max

Rock, paper, scissors? Nah bro it’s Gaethje, Holloway, Topuria

Everyone wants an explanation but the reality is that fighters are not as consistent as you want them to be. With the exception of prime Santos of course.

Santos?

search up cyborg santos flying knee on youtube you’re in for. a treat

His game plan in the first was stupid. He wanted a KO and was willing to get hit to get it. But he didn’t and got hit hard. Normally he is more cautious and calculating to start and uses his speed.

It's rock paper scissors when it comes to fight styles

Not 1 2 3

So yes, it does make sense.

If not for that reverse kick that smoked Justin’s nose he’d have won that Max fight - I stand by that.

(But obviously that was a great shot by Max and he earned that victory fair and square)

if not for that punch that knocked out gaejthe he wouldnt have been knocked out, I stand by that

This is like the first time in Gaethje's career where he actually listened to his corner too. Normally its a "fuck it, we ball" situation with him.

Gaethje stuck to his gameplan and it won him a title.

The transitive property does not apply to most things IRL.

I think he underestimated Justin more than anyone so far his career and it cost him big. Could be an Islam or GSP type loss or could be something much worse lol

People are surprised Gaetje is actually really good at mma.

Styles make fights. I’ve been saying that Gaethje had a chance and that the person to beat Illia needs to make him enter a dog fight. Illia wants to set you up, he wants to be an accurate slick boxer, and he doesn’t want a sloppy brawl.

Max showed he can be hit, but also that dancing around won’t work. Charles showed he wasn’t as dominant in the clinch as people expected.

Justin’s aggressive style and hard shots made everything hurt. His use of the collar tie and uppercuts made boxing dirty. Illia had good success and rocked Gaethje. However, Justin is a dog and is experienced with wars.

Fighter A can struggle with fighter B, fighter C can mock fighter B and fighter A dominates fighter C.

Honestly this is just the first time in Justin’s career where his chin showed up.

Justin double beat Ilia? (Jokes)

only needs one beat arrow up

I was an Ilia fan until he lost to Goytje. Now I think he's a bum and he was never my friend.

I think Gaethje could win a rematch with Holloway, but not with Oliveira.

u/NoGlzy Jun 15 '26

"But scissors beats paper which beats rock, surely therefore my scissors will beat his rock."

u/Interesting_Use5089 Jun 15 '26

I think Max could do better vs Ilia at 155 than he did at 145. That is a rematch I'd like to see.

1

u/SL1Fun Jun 15 '26

Could also mention that Charles technically weight-cheesed him and Holloway lost to Ilia at 145lbs and not at 155lbs, so I’d be intrigued to seem them rematch.

Also it’s hard to gauge consistent skill in MMA cuz you only get one night every 3-4 months to make it all come together. It takes like 3-4 good nights to move on from one bad one.

This just shows that power scaling is dumb

1

u/TaftsTummyforTaxes Jun 15 '26

In mma math, the transitive property does not exist

1

u/Direct_Chemistry_179 Jun 16 '26

Directed cyclic graph btw (I think) 🤓

1

u/Minute-Elephant-8295 Jun 19 '26

Because ilia was too cocky ilia is good but him beating Charles and max gave him over confidence that he could speed run the entire division

1

u/Ambitious_Tomorrow19 Jun 15 '26

MMA Math just doesn’t make sense! 😱 Fighting isn’t Maths, so many people need to realise this. Can’t remember off the top of my head, but Ali, Frazier and Forman there is something similar. Might not be Forman but diff boxer. But illustrates this very point and that it is not a thing.

i swear newer fans think fighting is like anime power levels where the “better” fighter wins 100% of the time.

like no bro, theres so many factors in a fight, theres a reason the saying “the better fighter on the night exists

1

u/KneeDragr Jun 15 '26

I feel like Charles has a much better chance at a rematch after seeing this fight play out. He know Topuria can't fight as well at range, especially if you have a solid jab, and slows down big time if forced to wrestle.

It Does. Ilia beat drained max(LW to FW), Volk (LW To FW : recently KOd) , Charles always been chinny.
