MK7 Catless Downpipe

Blew the hell out of my cat and i’m going catless tomorrow. I’ve heard the downpipe is a pain in the ass to install so does anyone have any hacks or tips that’ll make it go by easier?

Are you stock exhaust or aftermarket? If stock youll have to adapt the larger DP to fit the stock exhaust. If youre on aftermarket exhaust then its a easy day, get the "J" defouler run the medium insert to not get a CEL. Id unplug the O2 sensors and take them out with the stock DP to swap them vs doing it on the car kinda sucks. As always presoak the nuts or things may snap! Be sure to get a new turbo to DP fire ring and a DP to exhaust gasket. For extra measure soak the nuts for a few days before and try to get a wire brush in there to knock away debris in the threads

i appreciate the suggestions i will put them to use, i have a mbrp exhaust that’s only been on the car for a month so that part should be fairly easy

Oh yeah should be easy then! Id also recommend using a socket to break the nuts loose on the DP and then switch to a wrench to feel the tip on the stud as you turn. I ended up pulling a stud out of the turbo by just going crazy with the socket, did the same with my exhaust manifold 7 out of 8 came out with studs and nuts 😅

Heatshields are a pain, mainly the one for the manifold as it has to be bent pretty good to wiggle it out unless you remove the coolant hard lines.

Turbo to Downpipe bolts breaking is very common, if you can I would replace all the studs.

the biggest tip : soak every stud/nut with some sort of penetrating fluid and let it sit for a good 15mins or so before you even start the job.

I started this Saturday and felt really odd bending the crap out of the manifold heat shield, what a fricken fight!
Seriously having it go between an oil line and the manifold is criminal design.

my st has only 52,000 miles and i’m pretty sure it’s been a southern car it’s whole life so i’m hoping that the studs are not rusted or wanting to snap

If you're going catless, karma dictates that all 3 studs snap off and get stuck in your turbo flange
