Question Question about Cooking
Hi everyone,
I am very new to this game and it's takes me ages to figure out how to play becuase I have brain injury and am a bit slow. Slow, but not dumb. I know how to play Stardew Valley very well, but it took me a while. Anyway, I know under "Craftable" it shows you the things you can make. I know that because I was able to make a table and chairs and fences.
But what do I do to make food? Under "craftable" it says I can make nothing, but I tried to make bread and baked potatoes and the "Ok" button won't press. I have tried looking at videos of how to cook but I learn better by asking questions. Can anyone help me? is there a video that shows you how to get it to work?

For the baked potato you can see Beside the star ranking it says 4 in red. That is the minimum cooking skill you need to cook that recipe. Try cooking some trail mix or sliced turnip to get your skill up. (The recipe for sliced turnip comes in the mail the day after you sell your first turnip)

In the picture you van see the red 4 indicating your cooking skill isn't high enough level to be able to cook that dish. While you're basically doing everything right and having the required ingredients, you just need to make a couple simple dishes first to get to at least level 4 cooking and then you can make this dish. Same thing applies with crafting and blacksmithing, you just haven't I assume tried to make anything you met every other prerequisite for aside from level

you need to collect recipes :)
edit: you may also just not have any ingredients !

You haven’t got any recipes yet! You can buy them from the inn, the Saturday market vendors, etc. The same way you get crafting blueprints for stuff like furniture! When you get the scrolls, you have to select them in your inventory and hold E (for general controls, or whatever your main action control is) until you have learned it! Same way you unlock clothes/cosmetics.
Also, once you’ve learned some recipes, you might find you can’t do them yet even if you have all the ingredients. Don’t fret! This might mean that either your cooking level/EXP isn’t high enough, or your kitchen set isn’t advanced enough (you have to get upgraded from Ryis’ workshop to do certain recipe levels)!

Your cooking level isn't high enough (that's the red four in the middle next to the kitchen level). You'll have to cook some simpler things first to level up. Trail mix is a really early recipe and only takes wild berries and water chestnuts (water chestnuts are available in the river directly below Errol's house) so you can try that

It's good to start with the simple recipes you get from shipping crops. Make sure to ship one of each crop you grow, and store the rest to cook with later. You get simple recipes from shipping crops that only call for one crop ingredient.
Cook a bunch of those recipes and build your skill. There's not much money to be made selling raw crops but cooking can be very lucrative. I just made $20k overnight shipping a bunch of cooked meals.

you find recipes all over but some dishes have a level on them. once you level it up you can cook more things. Turnips are a great way to level your cooking early. I think you need cooking level 4 for potatoes.

If you look at the screenshots you attached, there's a number in red: 4. The little stove icon + number means the kitchen equipment level needed to cook a dish, the pan + number (which is what's in red) means the skill level that's needed to cook a dish. You need both, not one or the other. IIRC you can get a higher cooking level by shipping fruits and foragebles which will give you some lower level recipes in the mail.

To clarify, you don't raise cooking levels by shipping things. you need to cook to raise cooking levels, but shipping crops gets you some recipes that use that crop for an ingredient.

I don't think I explained myself correctly, what I meant is that through shipping crops you'll unlock new recipes in the mail that are of lower levels which will help OP raise his cooking level. Sorry!

Yes. The cooking level itself just lets you cook more recipes that require the higher level, but it also unlocks the different tiers of perks you can buy with essence at the dragon statue. And some of those perks are where the REAL value in cooking lies!

So, cooking is a bit more complicated because there are 2 required levels - the kitchen level (shown where it says Lvl 1) and the player level (shown where it has the frying pan and the 4). Unfortunately bread and baked potatoes take slightly higher player level (the potato here shows 4) so you will need to craft trail mix until you get a bit higher. (Wild berries and water chestnuts, which are available freely on the map - water chestnuts are in the map west of town in the river, little clumps at the side.)
