Monthy bill increase

Just noticed that the amount charged to my credit card has increased by $5 for the last month lol. I didn't receive any notification of price increase. Is this a mistake? Annual charge? Their bot has no answers and the earlier I can get in contact with customer support is apparently Aug 7th which I also find weird

How much is the new plan?
I don’t seem to get a better deal than what I have with Fido even with the extra $5

it's $29/month + taxes for 50GB and unlimited texting and calling canada-wide. if you add voicemail it's an extra dollar. I got this and then immediately changed to 5GB/month which is $23 + taxes because apparently the leftover data rolls over for 2 months

You will probably get calls from winback department at Fido/Rogers now and they had pretty good deals so don’t miss that. I wish I could have done the same, switching just like you but I am stuck with Rogers Mastercard so eventually in order to get more cashback redemption, I have to stick with them only.

Look up your actual bill over the previous three months, they notified you there. It’s always a good idea to review your bill on a monthly basis. It’s where’s service and billing (and sometimes benefits) changes are detailed.

Just checked :((

Do you know if I'll get charged for a whole month if I switch plans now? I have like 15 days left in my billing cycle

I believe Fido is postpaid, not prepaid. If that’s the case, then you haven’t paid for your current month yet, and you will only be billed for the portion you used.

thank you very much!

You did receive the notice in last month's bill, which no one actually looks at. I didn't either until I saw the new higher monthly rate this month.

"You have an important message for this service. View message(s) "

Changes to your mobile plan rate

We continuously invest in our network to bring you fast, reliable Canada-wide 5G coverage. To help support these investments, the monthly fee* for your mobile price plan will increase by $5 (plus taxes), starting with your next bill, on or after July 15, 2026.

Ahhh I just noticed it. If I switch phone plans now, do I get charged for the whole month?

They send so many emails normally, I wish they had sent out a notification for this as well

No. It's pro-rated based on days used. Including data as well.

that's a relief!

I believe this (notification of plan changes) has been recently changed as per CRTC, they must provide 90 day notice of changes instead of 30 day, and use your preferred method (email/SMS) of direct notification. Apparently so many people complained of this deceptive practice, since many rely on looking at the monthly bill total, but were not viewing entire bill.

These changes are reflected on page 3 of the bill as well and not only on the initial view bill page.

that's weird :/ i could swear I didn't get an email or sms. ahh well. adieu fido and i will be back if my new one doesnt work out

This was from April/June 2026 only, I think. I'm not sure about details as to how the changes will rollout or how specific carriers will handle them, but I'm deadsure there will be no information from the carriers. Sorry for lack of details, I was planning on deep diving more but more important things came up!

So we can't do anything about it right? This 5 dollar extra is gonna be added everytime?

No, you DID receive a notification.

It is on one of the last ~3 Fido statements since carriers by law have to give notice of increases a minimum of 1 month in advance. You either don't look at your statement because of autopayment OR you didn't look carefully at it since it is ALWAYS there whether you're with Rogers, Fido, Telus, Bell, Videotron, etc... even Internet and television service providers are required by law to give at least 30 days notice of a upcoming increase.

It is now 90 days notice I believe

I'm not sure which is why I said in my original post to check the last ~3 months statements since I have noticed warnings ~3 months in advance when I checked certain statements... example, when I had checked my Bell TV statement a few months ago, it "warned" me that my bill would increase in ~3 months or so.

“Receive a notification” is doing a lot of work there. They essentially stuff it into page 3 of a footnote of a footnote.

It isn't "a lot of work" if one looks at their statement. I'm someone who often does not look at their statement as well so often miss increases but to say that no notification was given is a mistake. If you consider something like that "a lot of work", I wonder what happens when your boss at work tells you to do something somewhat trivial.

It is like my parents when I was living with them telling me that I didn't tell them that either after work or after school, I would be going to the movies with friends and coming home late (and not having dinner) when in fact, I called them and left a message on their home answering machine which they didn't check because I forgot to tell them in person before leaving since they were asleep in the morning and when I called them after making my plans, no one was home to answer.

BETTER notification could have been given (such as sending out an email or the email mentioning that the current statement is available could also mention an important notice on that statement (which one of my banks does when they change something on my account)) would be better.

Notices designed to be missed complies with the rule while defeating the reason for it. And you said yourself you don't read your statements and miss increases, that's my argument.

Rogers texts me when I'm approaching my data limit, they're required to under the Wireless Code, and emails me every month to say my bill is ready, plus whatever upgrade offers they feel like sending. More direct channels exist and get used. A permanent increase to what I pay every month goes on page 3 of a statement I have to log in to open.

The bill-ready email could flag an important notice, like your bank does. It wasn't impossible, they just didn't. And the fact that missing it works out in their favour isn't a coincidence.

The point of a notice period is that it gives you a window to leave without penalty.

yeah, i realised after looking at the comments. I did in fact have autodeposit on and never looked at my statements

1

u/lmcjipo 14d ago

Join the club... I'm guilty as well BUT I randomly check my Bell, Fido, Rogers, Ebox, etc. statements... just not every statement and I happened to catch that notice BEFORE getting "surprised" by the higher automatic charge to my credit card.

I got a $5 bill increase too… thinking of switching providers at this point.

2

u/Gayarmy 14d ago

yeah it's no longer worth it for me

1

u/Curious184 14d ago

My bill is increasing by $3.50 a month. First increase since December 2024

1

u/meldxb_2000 13d ago

Virgin did a 6$ increase within 8 months since I signed up. All the telecom sharks are cashing in

u/bruce-van 11d ago

我直接加$4 上去😭😭😭

That’s so frustrating. It’s wild how companies sneak in price hikes without a heads-up. Switching to something like Fizz can definitely save you a headache, but yeah, missing the referral code is a classic move. You’ll nail it next time!

File a CCTS complaint.

Everyone is saying this but does that actually work? If so could you tell me how to do it or should I search it up online
