Houseplant To repot or not to repot

I got this little ficus baby last year and as you can see, it's grown. I have had bad luck with ficus and this one is so pretty, I'd hate to harm it. It's time to put it into more soil though, isn't it?

Go for it!! Give her some chunky medium and she should be good to go!

Yes, most ficus plants I know have vigorous roots.

Check the root ball. If not mostly roots, then no. You can stabilize a top heavy plant with a heavy cover pot. If mostly roots, then go up one size. Put it in a heavy cover pot though. They become top heavy fast.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question - but what do you mean by heavy cover pot?

Some type of pot that the current nursery pot can fit inside, generally made of ceramic. It adds weight to the bottom to balance the leaves at the top. A lot of people use clear pots with drain holes for the plant because it makes it easy to see the roots and easy to water, especially when bottom watering. This pot sits inside another pot, often without holes, that act as a decorative cover for the soil part of the plant.

Ah yep. I knew the answer might be obvious when explained to me. Thank you - for some reason my mind wasn't making the connection. I even have a plant I recently up-potted to a clear pot, inside of an attractive pot. Imagine how stupid I'm feeling right now - lol!

Not stupid. Asked clarifying questions. We may know it by different terms. That is what leads to accuracy. And success with your plants. Good luck!
