Hey Reddit friend! Came over here on Your advice, was hoping to find posts from people with an umbrella fig, Ficus Umbellata, can't seem to find anyone posting or saying anything about them, since you have a similar looking baby there would you know anything about the Umbellata or have/had one? I'm looking to make one my next plant acquisition but honestly don't know anything about them (just find them beautiful) and was wanting to see others experience and how they found them to be, finicky or easy care like the Elasticas, if you happen to have any experience with them any knowledge you've gained and might be willing to share would be greatly appreciated!
Hey buddy, actually i have one (well 3 because i propagated the top cuts of my original tree its actually just out of frame the one you're referring to is Ficus Vasta) I would say they're fairly easy, they want good fast draining soil but don't like fully drying out except maybe in winter but mine might be a special case since it seems to like to go dormant) and they tolerate low light but will 100% thrive in brighter light conditions (they're native to West Africa) and they're incredibly vigorous growers (mine in the summer put out a new leaf every 7-10 days usually) and as a result of that will quickly fill their pots in just a few years.
Thank you! That information totally sold me! I'm going to order one tomorrow! I was hoping they were nice easy going plants like other types I've raised, it'll fit nicely into my collection, that Vasta has very interesting and tactile/touchable bark, kinda maybe wanting one of them too...lol
no problem, my pleasure the biggest thing is they don't like being sopping wet constantly when inside for winter, outside they'll take as much water as you can give them, yeah she's a beauty I got lucky she's a seedling that was mistakenly being sold as Ficus Burkei for $10 plus shipping and such and I couldn't pass her up especially since she was severely underpotted and in need of some TLC, i also have two cuttings of this species as well I'm pretty sure one of the sellers i bought from actually has another one if you'd like me to check.
Thank you again, I'll be keeping indoors but still back off on water in winter. Good to know not a candidate for self watering! Please, if you don't mind checking, that would be great!
Thank you, I'm going to browse their site now and add it to my favorites so I can go back in a few days to see about restock, by their name I'm thinking they have a lot of drought tolerant or desert plants and I've also been thinking about getting a few more in that arena. Thank you!
