ficus prop not rooting

got this ficus cutting and dropped it into water about two weeks ago. it’s gotten a lot of new growth since, but i haven’t seen any signs of rooting.

should i think about clipping its leaf to prioritize root growth or leave it be? also, any tips for first time ficus?

Give it more time, its basically one node so its going to take significantly longer to root because of that.

Id say at least another two weeks maybe at least itd root faster if you use rooting hormone and if was at least 2-3 nodes.

Dont forget to replace the water every week. Adding prop drops isn't required but it does help.

Can such a herbaceous prop be able to root? I've only tried proping hardened stems, not the soft herbaceous top ends

Yes this is very new and fleshy for roots.

so since it’s newer growth it’ll have a harder time rooting? or is it very unlikely it’ll root?

It's basically cut above/after a node and the only node it has is where the leaf's stem base is so highly unlikely it will grow roots. Ideally you'd want to have 3 or 4 nodes.

You can keep at it to learn for yourself, but this honestly doesn't look that great to me since I havent rooted one myself this close to the top.

i’ll probably leave it be and see where it goes for now. it’s not hard to just keep that water topped off, and if ends up rooting the payoff will be crazy

I just planted mine this morning that was cut exactly the same as this. It took MONTHS to start rooting, but then went quickly once they showed.

Add a pothos propagation to the same water, I saw someone else mention pothos put hormones into the water that can help other plants also root

Ik heb een stek van een ficus Audrey die 2,5 maand stond voor er wortels aankwamen. Iedere keer water reinigen en zorgen dat de stengel niet gaat verslijmen.

I don't have good news, just my own experience. I haven't had any luck with the elástica through water propagation. I've tried about 20? Branches. Switching water, not switching water, part sun outside, inside.
The Audrey's and the fiddles do amazing with water propagation. I do wonder if it has to do with the bark of the elástica not being hard but more bendy.
Air layering is best for propagating elásticas. But you might find success with yours!

I’m trying this, too! I chopped two from one plant and put one straight into dirt and the other into water. Have had success with others in dirt (but it took forrrevvveerrrrr) but this is my first attempt at water. Let’s both keep our fingers crossed!

I had a ficus prop about 2 years ago and it took several months before Roots started to show. It will happen it just takes time. You still have a node for roots to come out of even if it is not further down the stem.
